The Nitra castle in Nitra contains St.Emeram's Basilica, which serves as the Cathedral Temple of the Bishopship of Nitra. This monument is dedicated to Saint Emeram, the bishop and martyr who lived in the 7th century, and since 1961 it has been declared a national cultural monument.

The Roman chapel of St.Emeram, which dates back to the end of the 11th to the beginning of the 12th century, is the oldest preserved part of the cathedral. In the past, it was supposed to be the original church of Prince Pribina from the 9th century, but the research refuted this theory. After the fire in the second half of the 13th century, the chapel was rebuilt and after the destruction of the army of Matúš Čák Trenčínsky in 1317 it was connected with the new Gothic building. Gothic reconstruction of the sacral complex began bishop The delay in 1333 and the works were completed in 1355.

The church is built on a rock elevation as a one-ship Gothic building. At the time the castle ceased to have strategic importance, the entire temple space was rebuilt in Baroque style according to the projects of Italian architect Domenic Martinelli. At this reconstruction, the Romanesque part was closed by a transverse wall and the lower church boat narrowed.

Contemporary interior is the result of reconstruction. In the upper church there is a tall wooden cross with the crucified Jesus Christ on the modern altar of gold onyx, which is the work of J. Pospíšil. Visitors may be interested in the colourful stains of windows from Louis Fulla depicting Saint Andrew and Saint Benedict. In the interior there is also a rare relic of the remains of St. Cyril, which came from Rome through Bishop Karol Kmeťek. The most valuable artistic monument of the cathedral from the point of view of sculptural decoration is the altar, which includes plastic relief Shooting from the cross and marble relief laying to the grave. The lower church is complemented by three tombstones of Nitra bishops and three side latebaroque altars from the 18th century.

The title of the basilica church was restored on October 21, 1998, after a visit of Pope John Paul II in 1995. The monument represents a complex of buildings of different ages and is an important place for the history of the Nitra bishopric.
