Trnava University University
St John the Baptist church in Trnava is a Roman Catholic baroque church built in the 17th century as part of the complex of buildings of the historic Trnava University. Today it serves as the Cathedral Temple of the Archdiocese of Trnava.
The beginnings of the temple are associated with the second coming of Jesuits to Trnava and their activities between 1615 and 1773. The donator of the church was the palatin Mikuláš Esterházy, who entrusted the construction to Italian masters Antonio and Pietro Spazz in 1629. The unfinished church was consecrated in 1637. The church served not only its spiritual mission but also theological debates and graduations. The area, which the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic registers under the number of ÚZPF 1043, consists of several objects including the Faculty of Philosophy, several seminars, courtyards, gardens and memorial tables.
This single - boat two - towered temple with a flat shrine cap is westward and reaches a length of 61 metres and a width of 28 metres. Above the main portal there is a shield with figures sitting angels and stone coat of arms of the Esterházy family, under which is placed the stone coat of arms of Trnava Archdiocese used since 2011. The main interior area is surrounded by rolling vaults with lunetts, while chapels on both sides of the ship have cross vaults. Painting and stucco is the work of Italian artists G. B. Ross, G. Tornini and P. Conti, while the ceiling frescoes were created by the North Italian masters F. I. Grafenstein and C. Ricchi. On the left pillar of the church there is an early Baroque pulpit from 1637 from B. Knilling and V. Stadler. The main altar is all-wooden, completed between 1637 and 1640, measuring 20.3 metres in height and 14.8 metres in width. Viennese masters B. Knilling and V. Knoth, V. Stadler from Trnava and Master Ferdinand from Cífer participated in its implementation. There are eight historical Mortuaries of the Esterházy family and Imrich Očat. In the underground catacombs are located graves.
The temple has undergone several building modifications and restoration works. Already in the first half of the 18th century, the temple roofs were probably repaired, where the sandtus tower was removed, and it returned to the roof after reconstruction in the 1990s. In the second half of the 19th century some frescoes were partially repaired and the general preservation of temple decoration began in 1942. Between 1958 and 1963 there was a partial restaurant of side chapels and between 1970 and 1972 the main altar. After 1989, a comprehensive restoration of the church took place.
In 1977, Pope Paul VI appointed Trnava the seat of the Archbishopship, and in December 1978, the temple was appointed as the Cathedral of Pope John Paul II. A visit by Pope John Paul II took place in 2003. After the creation of the Bratislava Archdiocese in 2008 Trnava Cathedral ceased to be metropolitan.
The area with cathedral is open to the public.

Welcome to Trnava, a city that rightly breathes history and where you are now in a place of extraordinary spiritual and cultural importance. You stand in front of an impressive total of Trnava University and its adjacent church, which form one of the most important historical hearts of this region. When you look up and look ahead to yourself, see the greatness and atmosphere of this space, which centuries ago shaped the education and spiritual life of the entire community. Let's go back in time and get to know the story behind these walls. This important church dates back to the first half of the 17th century, namely 1629. The whole building was then built by the influential palatin Mikuláš Esterházy, who had great visions for the development of this region. He entrusted the construction to experienced Italian masters Antonio and Pietro Spazz, whose manuscript brought a unique building spirit to Trnava's environment. Work progressed relatively quickly, but the time was difficult and writing history meant overcoming various obstacles. The fact that, even before the entire temple was complete, he was sanctified in 1637 shows this. Now pay attention to the architecture itself and the details ahead. Look at the facade and the overall line of construction that reflects the art of Italian builders. Although the church grew up at a time when building styles changed, it is important to perceive its authentic matter, monumental silhouette and proportions designed by Antonio and Pietro Spazz. Note the cleanliness of the lines and the way this sacral building fits into the urban context of the historical core of the city. Each stone here tells a story about the precise work of masters from four centuries ago who were able to combine functionality with a representative look worthy of such a significant place. This church, however, did not serve only its spiritual mission, a particularly fascinating moment in its history. Imagine that these facilities witnessed not only silent prayers and services but also large academic meetings. There were theological debates and ceremonial graduations. Long ago, scholars, students, and scholars met here to conduct deep-tuned debates and celebrate the achievements of knowledge. Thus, the church was a living center where faith and education intertwined, adding a completely different dimension to this place than what we are used to in ordinary temples. When you look at the details of the interior, if you have the opportunity to look inside, or imagine its historical form, you will encounter real attractions. Among the most remarkable elements of this temple was the wooded main altar. Imagine the huge work of woodcarvers who were able to create a magnificent work of art dominated by the entire inner space. This wooden gem was the pride of the entire church and gave it a special atmosphere admired by all visitors, students and church dignitaries. The conclusion of our walk today is an invitation to another discovery. We firmly believe that you are so impressed by the story of Trnava University and its church that you will continue to roam this magic city and perceive its other historical corners. Thank you for listening to our audio guide, we wish you a pleasant rest of the day and goodbye to other sights of Trnava.
Tips for visitors
Trnava University and the adjacent church of St. John the Baptist we recommend visiting early in the morning. At that time, the facade of buildings and the square are well lit and there are fewer visitors.
For a walk to the city center, wrap up comfortable shoes suitable for pavement, camera or smartphone and in warmer months drinking water and sunglasses.
The area is best photographed from opposite side of the street, especially in soft light early in the afternoon or before sunset.
Families with children can join the ice cream break in the pedestrian zone and squares.

Imagine having a secret time controller in your hand. You press one button and suddenly the world around you is blurry. When you look around, you're no longer in your room, but in Trnava. It's exactly 397 years ago, 1629! Streets aren't asphaltic, they're rocky, and instead of cars, you can hear just horse bumps and loud people in long, thick clothes.
