jewish synagogue Synagogue
Synagogue in Brezno is a neological church in the style of histology on Štúrova Street in Banská Bystrica region. The building was created at the turn of the 20th century. After a comprehensive reconstruction from 2016, it serves as a centre for cultural and social events.
The foundation stone of the building was laid in 1901. The project was prepared by Alois Payerberger from Banská Bystrica and the temple was consecrated in 1902. In 1930 the building was repaired.
The building has three floors. The second is a U-shaped women's gallery. From the entrance space the stairs lead to the prayer room and the gallery. Aron-ha-kodeš is located on the east side of the main hall.
The building stopped fulfilling its original role in 1942 after the deportation of the Jews from Brezno. In the post-war period, they used it as a warehouse for furniture and seed. Since 26 January 1973 it has been registered as a cultural monument, although the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic then characterized it as a monument without use with a disturbed state.
In 1996 the building underwent a partial reconstruction to which Breznian Jews living abroad contributed. The ownership of the building went to the hands of the town of Brezna, which subsequently organized events in it.
The complex reconstruction took place from September to December 2015. The total cost amounted to EUR 1.123 million. The amount was covered by the European Social Fund (85%), the state budget (10%) and the City of Brezna (5%). The synagogue was reopened on 11 May 2016.
Currently, the building is designed for cultural and social events of chamber character, such as concerts, exhibitions, theatre and recitals. Partner of the building is the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica. Part of the operation is an exhibition about the Jewish community in the city and an accessible dome overlooking the city.

Welcome to Brezno, the heart of the Banská Bystrica region. Right now you are facing one of the most important monuments of the city, which testifies to the rich and painful act of the local community. Before you is the building of the Jewish synagogue, a temple that, by its presence in the city, resembles the period of Jewish religious minority flourishing in the region. When you look at the building, you will see, above all, a witness of time that has experienced dramatic changes over the last two centuries.
Now let's rush into the past together so we can understand how this construction was created. At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, more precisely in 1901, the foundation stone of the temple was laid. At that time the city of Brezno experienced dynamic development and the Jewish village needed spaces that would match its spiritual needs and social status. Work on the building progressed quickly and already in 1902 the temple was solemnly ordained. It was a neological temple, which means that it represented the modern current in Jewishism, which was more open with surrounding social life and culture. Although the names of architects who designed this project remained unknown in time, their work bears clear signs of its time.
Venia now his attention to the architecture of the building. The synagogue is built in the style of historism, which was then a very popular direction that drew from the previous eras and combined them into a representative whole. When you dream of the facade and overall layout, note that the building has three aboveground floors. It is a structure that aims not only to give its size but also to perform specific ritual functions. If you could look inside now, you'd find a women's gallery on the second floor. This gallery is built in the shape of the letter U, which was a common solution in the neological synagogues so that women can watch services separated from men, but at the same time had a good view from the main hall.
However, the history of this building is divided into two very different periods. The first part is the story of faith and community, the second part of silence and oblivion. In 1930, the building was repaired, indicating that it was still an active center of spiritual life. However, in 1942, tragedy came that changed the fate of many inhabitants of Brezno. After deporting the Jews to concentration camps, the original use of the synagogue was definitively discontinued. The temple remained without its believers and without its soul.
Consequently, there has been a period which is very sad in terms of cultural heritage. In the postwar period, when many monuments were left with dignity, the synagogue served as a storehouse for furniture and seed. Imagine the contrast: the place for prayer, the study of holy texts, and spiritual development has become a place for storing materials and grain. The building gradually deteriorated, but its substance survived.
A turning point in the fate of the building occurred in 1973, when the synagogue was officially kept as a cultural monument. This was the first step to make the city and state interested in saving this unique object. However, the journey to a full recovery took many years. Thanks to the perseverance and the dream of preserving the historical identity of the city has managed to implement a comprehensive reconstruction. This major correction was completed in 2016 when the synagogue was reopened to the public.
When you stand before this object today, feel the atmosphere of the place that has passed from fame to total neglect to rebirth. It is a place that teaches us about tolerance, about the tragedies of the past, but also about the ability to correct what was almost irreversibly destroyed. Notice how the building is now written into the city's panorama and how it bears the mark of every century it has survived.
The names of the people who designed and built this temple remain a mystery, but their work speaks for them. It's fascinating to think about how many generations of people in these walls have been looking for peace and an answer to life's questions, while the building has been quiet for many years.
We are inviting you now to further explore the surroundings. Let yourself be guided by the silent testimony of this condition and consider the importance of each community's contribution to the overall picture of our history. We hope that this short trip to the past has helped you to better understand the meaning of the Jewish synagogue in Brezno. Thank you for your attention and we wish you a pleasant further stay in our city.
