Levice castle is preserved ruins of Gothic castle in the district of Levice in the Nitra region. It was created in the second half of the 13th century to defend southern access to Central Slovakia's mining towns.

They built it on a rocky elevation surrounded by swampy territory. Originally he formed part of the estate of Matúš Čák Trenčínsky and later became a royal castle.

The architecture includes a Gothic core with a palace and towers from the 13th and 14th centuries. Gothic bastions and palaces from the 14th and the first half of the 15th century are in front. In 1571 a Renaissance mansion with corner bastions was built in the lower courtyard. After 1635 the outer fortification was tied to the city walls, which separated the castle trench. The area also includes Baroque residential buildings from the 17th century.

In 1388 the castle fell the Levick family. After 1529 it belonged to the king and the Tekov bathrobes. Later, Melchior Balash, whose victories led to the siege of the castle by the imperial army, the surrender of the crew, and the executions under the castle walls, received possession. After the death of the Levick family in 1553 the castle fell again to the king and was incorporated into the system of anti-Turkish forts. Later it was owned by the Dobós, the Colonics, the Chakys and the Esterhazis.

In 1434 the castle was caught by fire, followed by reconstruction. The Turks first appeared under the walls in 1544 and conquered the castle in 1663. After the Battle of Levice, they were forced out of town and the castle was again fortified under the supervision of military commander L. de Souches. Due to Turkish discharges and decimation of the local population, subjects from Orava and Liptov participated in the repair work.

After the city fire in 1696, the damaged castle began to demolished. The military crew left him in 1699. From 1702 to 1709 the castle was held by the army of František II. Rákoci, which completed its destruction before departure. After 1710 the bastion and manor house were repaired.

Today, the masonry of the upper castle is preserved with a Gothic palace, an eastern bastion used as a tea room and a southwestern bassion serving as an amphitheater. There is a Dobóovský Renaissance mansion and a captain's house with a western bastion, which houses Tekovské Museum, which also manages the castle.

You know, Levice. You are standing in front of one of the most important historical points in this region, in front of a castle that has been following the movement of the world around it for centuries. Now that you look up, you are likely to be hit immediately by that majestic rock elevation where the castle is carried over the surrounding landscape. Feel the atmosphere that works here. It is a place where the relentlessness of nature meets the human pursuit of security and stability. When you look around, you will see how the castle naturally fits into this harsh but fascinating country. It's not just a building, it's a solid symbol that dominates the surroundings and that calls on you from the first moment to stop and pay attention to its quiet but rich story.

To understand why this castle is standing right here, we must go back to the past. His story is not just about stones, but about the strategic important role he had to perform. The castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century. At the time, the construction of such fortifications was not just a matter of prestige, but above all of survival and control over important trade and military routes. The main objective that led to its creation was to protect the southern access to the Central Slovak region, where precious mining towns were located. During that time, the treasures of the entire kingdom were gold and silver, which ran out in deep shafts, and the roads leading to these riches had to be constantly monitored and defended. The Levice Castle thus served as an important guard who ensured that these wealthes could safely pass through the region.

Now that you're standing right under it, try to see how the architecture of the castle works closely with what the earth has given us. Look at the rocky hill where the castle stands. This natural advantage gave him unwelcome defense. At a time when the castle was being built, modern technologies did not exist and therefore the best ally of each builder was the terrain itself. If you look below, at the feet of this rock, you may notice that the surroundings of the castle were quite different in the past. The castle was surrounded by swampy territory. This combination - unprovable rock and dangerous, insurmountable swamps - created an almost perfect natural barrier for any enemy who would attempt to attack the castle. Consider the power of nature, which served the castle as the best ally and made it an almost invincible fortress.

Looking around, you may wonder who all this place was in the past. Who stood on guard, who lived here, and who decided the fate of the entire region? However, it is one of the big historical questions that we do not have a clear answer to. History in this case has not given us the names of particular architects or the names of significant personalities that would control the castle in its best times. However, this unknownness does not harm the castle, on the contrary, it gives it a special, even mystical charm. It is this lack of concrete changes that allows us to imagine thousands of anonymous people who have worked here, who have been guarding here and who have experienced their most difficult and most famous moments. The castle thus becomes a place where we are not talking about individuals, but about the whole generations that have left their mark on these massive walls.

However, the history of this place was not just about calm guarding and strategic control. It was full of dramatic and sometimes tragic twists that changed the castle forever. One of the biggest moments that hit the castle occurred in 1434. At that time, a devastating fire struck the castle. Imagine the chaos, the smoke, and the fear that had to reign in this place. The fire was so devastating that the castle required complete restoration. However, the castle did not give up. This tragic event was followed by rebuilding, trying to rebuild and strengthening this fortress so that it could continue its role. And this assignment later became even more urgent when the Turks first appeared under the walls. This threat from the south brought constant tensions to the region, and at any moment the castle had to be prepared to defend itself from an unknown enemy who threatened the stability of the entire region.

This castle is therefore more than a composition of stone and mortar. He is a Witness of the century who survived fires, wars, and changing times. Now, as you continue your journey and take a closer look around, try to perceive the power that this place radiates. Feel every rock and every piece of this country, because each of them was once part of a big game for power, wealth and security.

We invite you to enjoy this experience in peace and to be carried away by the atmosphere of this historic place. Perhaps at the next sight of the castle walls you will see something new, something you have missed at this moment. We wish you a pleasant walk and let this view of Levice castle stay in your memory for a long time. Goodbye.
