Welcome to Markušovce. Right now you are standing in front of Markušov Castle, a monument that spreads its quiet and mysterious presence over Rajbanovska Valley. Now, when you look ahead to yourself, you will see, above all, a witness of ancient times who bears the mark of many generations. Feel the atmosphere of this place, where nature slowly connects with man's stonework and where every view in the valley resembles the strategic importance that this site once had for the area.
Although the exact chronology of castle formation is not detailed in the available records, Markušovský Castle is a typical example of a fortified mansion, which was meant to serve not only as a defence point, but also as the centre of the administration of surrounding estates. In the context of medieval construction in this region, it can be assumed that its emergence was motivated by the need to control trade routes and protect local residents from the dangers that the region had experienced in the ancient centuries. The castle thus grew and changed along with the needs of its owners, adapting to new military technologies and life style nobility.
If we were to focus on architecture now, look at the overall layout of the object. Note how the building naturally enters the field. Looking at the facade and preserved parts of the object, perceive the massiveness of structures that would resist the pressure of the enemy. Although time has left its irreversible mark on the walls, you can still feel the strength and stability that architects have put into this work. Follow the lines of walls and the way the castle is picked up above the surroundings. It is a place where functionality prevailed over decorativeness, because the primary objective was security and strategic advantage.
Who really controlled this place, and what personalities have passed through here? Although the specific names of architects or key historical personalities are not precisely defined in our documents, Markušovský castle was an integral part of the wider castle and castle system in the Košice region. Each of those who lived here had to be responsible for the security of the entire estate. Imagine knights in armory, serving who kept the castle running, and noble families looking for refuge and peace. Although their names may not be in every textbook of history today, their presence is engraved on every stone you see now.
Every castle has a secret. At Markušov Castle, perhaps the greatest mystery is just what remains unknown. The empty places in history, the unknown names of the builders and the silence that surrounds these walls today, create a special kind of tension. It is an invitation to imagine for ourselves what this castle looked like at the time of its greatest glory, what conversations were held here and what plans were made in these halls forgevali. It is this unknownness that gives the site a certain myth and makes a visit to the castle such a silent dialogue with the past.
Now that you have felt the spirit of this place and looked at its basic features, we invite you to further explore the area. Walk the surrounding roads, view the silence of the country, and give yourself a moment of meditation on how time changes while the stone Witnesses remain. We hope that your visit to Markušov Castle has enriched you and that you have felt the depth of history of this region. Thank you for your attention and we wish you a pleasant rest of the day in further discovering the beauty of the region of Košice.
Tips for visitors
We recommend visiting the castle Markušovce in spring or autumn. During this period, temperatures are suitable for walks. Due to uneven and rocky terrain, we recommend footwear with a fixed sole. We recommend to the photographers the time shortly before sundown, when low light highlights the texture of walls and allows to capture the entire area. Families with children can explore the surroundings of the castle; we recommend taking water and snacks.
