The town house in Štítnik is a typical example of the town house from the 18th and 19th centuries, located in the village of Štítnik, Košice region.

During the Middle Ages, houses were wooden, rarely with more solvent owners, brick. The types of houses were influenced by the material, the way of heating, the solvency of the owner and the way of defense.

The townhouse was a block multi-storey building, situated on a plot with a high stone wall. The economic object was situated at the opposite end of the plot. Townhouses together formed an effective defense system.

The chamber house had a simple longitudinal floor plan. The facade was situated front room, the court-oriented chamber and between them in the middle part was located black kitchen.

The house with passage was extremely well functionally usable and for a very long period became the most frequent layout type of the city residential building.

In the 17th and especially in the 18th century there was an increased interest of nobility in the city, which related to its functions in the county or military administration. The noble house was bought next to each other - sometimes two to three plots - and it was rebuilt into representative buildings.

The city's palace was the main feature of the front courtyard. In front of the floor there were social spaces, which led to comfortable, architecturally and visually highlighted staircases.

Pavlačové houses were characterized by a closed layout of a four-winged block with a central courtyard. Common sanitation facilities were located at the end of the pail.

Houses of poverty, iron houses were on the outskirts of the city, often forming part of the walls. They represented the existential minimum.

The original objects were modernized mainly in the parter. Many retained their original functional use (trade), but the sales method was more oriented towards advertising.

The function of housing remained in originally residential burgher houses until today, only the requirements of the standard of housing changed.

Townhouse, Andreja Street Smoth 5, Banska Štiavnica is a typical example of the burgher house of the late Renaissance period and Baroque. It retains the overall expression and ground plan - spatial composition.

The townhouse in Štítnik is remarkable, because it is located in a steep terrain configuration and forms part of the terraced buildings. Its important position in relation to the original urban aspects fixed older urban situation in relation to the original communication route and side communication.

Welcome to Štítnik. They just stopped by one of those objects that make up the true soul of this city and carry traces of ancient times. Now that you look at this burgher's house, you may not see at first glance anything dramatic, but if you stop by, you will sell your view of its facade and get carried away with your thoughts, you will find that you are facing a quiet but extremely important witness to the social changes that shaped our world. This house is not just a set of walls and roofs, it is a chapter of history that tells us how human destinies have changed, how power has changed and how the very face of the city has been called.

Let us first understand what happened here centuries ago. To understand the importance of this place, we must return to the 18th century. During this period, something fundamentally changed in our lands. Nobility has started to show interest in cities that have served primarily as commercial and craft centres. They were no longer just residents of cities living here, but people with different statuses, other needs and other ambitions began to come here. The nobles sought the proximity of the center, looked for prestige, and looked for an environment that would allow them to be part of the city's life, but at the same time allowed them to retain their noble identity.

This process was further deepened in the nineteenth century. At that time we are witnessing a fascinating phenomenon where noble families began to buy and rebuild existing city houses. They were no longer mere homes for businessmen or craftsmen, but they became representative residences. Every rebuilt facade, every change in the spatial available was an expression of a new lifestyle. This house you're looking at right now is exactly this typical example. It is the product of this era in which the burgher architecture met with aristocratic ambitions.

Now let us take a closer look at how this house is involved in its environment. Note the terrain you are in. The shield is characterized by its dynamic and sometimes demanding topography. This house does not stand on a flat, tidy surface, but is firmly rooted in a steep terrain configuration. It is this difficulty of terrain that gives local buildings its unique character. The house is not an isolated object, which stands alone; it is an integral part of a row building. When you look on the sides, you will see how houses in this street connect, how they create a continuous wall that defines the city's space.

This row building is not random. This house, along with other buildings in this row, fixed what historians call an older urban situation. This means that its location is not the result of modern planning on mild terrain, but is directly linked to the original communications. If you look at the direction of the street and how the house is in connection with the side communication, you will see a map of the past. This house basically holds the key to understanding while the city of Štítnik moved in the past, while the roads were on the way and how the rhythm of urban movement was formed thanks to these structures. It's like looking at an old map, where buildings are not just points, but lines that determine the direction the city was following.

You might wonder who exactly built these walls. Who was the architect who designed this structure in the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries? Who was the owner who decided this house would be his representative seat? Here we come to one of the greatest mysteries of history. Although this house stands before us as tangible proof of a certain epic, the names of its creators and specific persons who lived in its walls remained lost in the shadow of time. Unknown names of architects who had to solve the difficulty of this violent terrain, nor the names of noblemen or noblemen who may have organized their social evenings here at this time.

However, this anonymity does not mean that there is a storyless place. It is this unknownness that gives this place some depth and mysticism. When you look at the facade, you see not only stone or omelette, but you see the effort of strangers to create something permanent. You see the pursuit of prestige, beauty, and stability in a time that has constantly changed. Even if we don't know the names, we know their intention. Their intention was to express themselves through architecture, to adapt to nature and to control it.

So feel the atmosphere. See how this house is quietly involved in the whole, how it holds the ground, and how its position tells us how somewhere in the past it has changed the way people have moved. It's fascinating how one single object can be such an anchor for the entire urban structure. Without these houses, without their firm rooting in the field, Štítnik would lose his identity and his ability to tell stories about his past.

Stop for a moment and just feel this space. Imagine how people moved here in the past, looking for a place to live in this steep slope, and how these houses gradually became part of the city you know today. This burgher house is a living link between the long-standing aristocratic ambition and today's reality.

We hope that this view of this object has helped you to understand more than what you see before your own eyes. History is not just about data and names, it is about space, shapes and how buildings are entered into the country. Continue your tour now, and at every next step in the streets of Štítnik try to look for these hidden links. Any other house you see may be another page in this fascinating book of history. We wish you a pleasant walk and other interesting discoveries of our historical treasures. We'll say goodbye, but history stays here, ready to be rediscovered by those who look at it with attention.
