town hall Town hall
Kežmarok Town Hall is a historic building located on the Main Square, which is part of the urban conservation area. This object has the status of a national cultural monument and its history dates back to the middle of the 16th century. The Architecture of the Town Hall has undergone transformations from the original Gothic to the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist style.
The first town hall building was built on the Old Market in the 15th century and was damaged by a fire following the invasion of Husitov in 1433. After this incident, the city center moved, where Juraj from Spišská Sobota built a new town hall in 1461 in a new place with rectangular ground plan and Gothic architectural style.
Architectural development continued after the first major fire in the first half of the 16th century, when it was renaissanceally rebuilt by Master Kuntz of Kežmarok between 1541 and 1555. In 1641 the town hall was joined by the tower, which is considered a Baroque added part. According to the description of Juraj Bohuš in 1720 they had a town hall of battlements and on the south side of the coat of arms of the city with justice.
In 1779 the fire again damaged the condition of the building led to its conversion into a classicistic style in 1799. The last major fire that struck the town hall was recorded on May 24, 1922, followed by a repair of the building in 1923. In 2019 a fountain was created in front of the town hall.
Under the town hall there is an old cellar with an escape corridor, which legends attribute as access to the town hall. Today, the city office of Kežmarok is located in the building. Town Hall was registered on the list of cultural monuments on December 4, 1981.
