Welcome to Levoča. Right now, when you stand in front of the city fortification, a piece of deep and fascinating history lies under your feet. Look around you and see the atmosphere. You are standing on the border between two worlds - the world of today's vibrant city and the world of ancient times, when these walls were the absolute centre of security, stability and identity of the entire population. The first impression these buildings give is the sense of strength and duration. Although time is constantly changing, this fortification stands as a silent witness to everything that has happened in this region. Consider the massiveness and dimension that this object forms in the country.

When we try to understand why this fortification has ever been built, we have to go back to a time when security was not a matter of course, but a luxury that the city had to fight. Although the exact period of construction and chronology of this work are not exactly certain in our records, the very existence of these structures tells us everything necessary. In ancient centuries, city walls were not just a stone barrier. They were a symbol of the authority, independence, and ability of the city to protect their treasure, their business, and their people. Levoča, as a prominent place, needed protection that would enable her to prosper in uncertain times. These walls were the answer to the need for stability in a world that was often hostile and unpredictable.

Now please pay attention to the architecture itself and to what you have right in front of you. When you look at these structures, try to notice their overall texture and the way they were incorporated into the local environment. Although we do not know the names of the particular architects who designed these lines, their artistic sense and technical knowledge are clearly visible in how successfully this fortification defines the contours of the city. Look at how the walls are drilled in the field and how they create a solid framework for urban architecture. Consider the roughness of the material, its informal beauty, and the way each part of the work acts as an integral part of the defense strategy. You may notice minor details in the material connection or in the light breaking on uneven surfaces. Although we do not see in front of us the monumental statues or decorations that would be included in the documentation, the geometry itself and the dimension of this fortification are sufficient proof of the grandeur of the original sense.

When we look at these walls, we can't forget the people involved. Although history has not told us the names of the specific personalities that governed or lived in his shadow, we can imagine them. Imagine the anonymous workers who laid every stone in the endless rain and forest. Imagine the guards walking in these circuits at night, watching mountains on the horizon in the silence of the night air. These walls were home to the city's inhabitants in the broadest sense - walls that held them together and protected them from the unknown. Every person who has walked through the gate, every citizen who has settled under the fortification, has put his part of life in this place.

There's a mystery here. It's the quiet, incomprehensible bond between what we see today and what happened centuries ago. When you stop and close your eyes for a moment, you can feel the uncertainty people must have felt when these walls were still being built. What did all these walls see? What enemy armies approached them? What joyous processions have been through them? Although we do not have the answers to all the questions, this uncertainty and this unknown chronology give the site a special touch of mystery. It is this incompleteness of information that allows us to add our imagination to the rest of the story.

Regardless of whether you are here for history, architecture or just for a quiet walk, this city fortification offers you a unique view of how a man tried to control his fate through stone barriers. It is a monument that teaches you humility to time and to what persists.

Now we invite you to continue your journey. Let yourself be carried away by the atmosphere of Levoča, walk through the streets once guarded by these walls, and discover other attractions that this beautiful city has prepared for you. We hope that this short look at the city fortification was inspiring for you. We wish you a pleasant and memorable rest of the day in discovering our historical treasures. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

City fortification in Levoča is recommended to visit early in the morning or evening when there are fewer people on the streets. Since this is an object in the public space, which is seen from the outside, we recommend footwear with fixed soles suitable for historical tiles.

We recommend using the golden hour before sunbathing. Low light highlights the texture of brick walls and fortification details. The images will be the best from the perspective of the streets leading to the walls.

For families with children, a walk along the fortification perimeter is an opportunity to find historical details and bassions, which helps younger visitors to visualize the city's defensive function.

We recommend to focus on exploring the remains of the city fortification and its involvement in the architecture of the centre of Levoča.

For children

Close your eyes and imagine coming back hundreds of years ago. Seduce your loose clothes and wear a thick coat. We are in Levoča, a city that in the Middle Ages did not resemble a quiet place on the map, but a real fortress that was impenetrable. The air smells like smoke from the hearts and in the streets you hear horse claps and screams from traders. But watch out! If you're a stranger and you want to come into town, you can't just choose a path. You have to cross the massive gates guarded by armed soldiers.
