Cachtice castle Castle
Čachtice castle, also known as the Castle of Cachtice, is a historical ruin located on the limestone-dolomite mountain 375 metres above sea level. This castle complex lies in the area of Čachtice Karst, between Čachtice and Višňové in Trenčín region in Slovakia. The castle was built in the first half of the 13th century as a defense fortress protecting the western border of Hungary.
The creation of Čachtice Castle dates back to the first half of the 13th century when it was built on the territory of the current Trenčín region. His main task was to ensure the protection of the Hungarian border against potential attacks by the Czech Republic and other neighbouring nations. In 1273 he was attacked by the Czech king Premysl Otakar II., who harmed the castle significantly. Among the first masters of the castle were Peter and Pongrác of the Hunt-Poznanov family, later managed by Matúš Čák Trenčiansky. In 1392 he transferred to the property of Stibor from Stiborice, which owned about 20 castles in Považí. In 1467 the Hussite commander John Švehl was imprisoned in the castle.
The architecture of Čachtice Castle was designed to ensure its defensive function. The castle was built as a massive fortress with multiple fortification levels. Buildings were built at the highest point of the castle, including a palace with a label and horseshoe tower, which included a chapel. Other buildings have gradually developed around the upper courtyard since the 14th century. There's another palace and chapel coming from the Stibors. The lower courtyard, which served mainly defense, was accessible from the upper ridge over the ditch cut in the rock.
Ownership of the Čachticgo castle went through various hands. Since 1569 it was owned by the Nadasdys who won the castle with the wedding of Francis Nadasdy and Elizabeth Bátory. In 1708 the castle of the army was conquered by Franz II. Rákoci and since then began to be released, even though it was in time serving as a prison.
Key events in the history of Čachtice Castle include the attack of Premyslo Otakar II. in 1273 and the imprisonment of John Švehl in 1467. The castle was primarily to protect the Hungarian border, so it was built as a mighty fortress. It has never become a luxurious seat, and housing in the castle was uncomfortable.
Today, the ruins of Cachtice Castle are well identified, gradually rising at the upper, middle and lower castles. The fortifications retained the rest of the label Renaissance attic, and at the upper castle there are fragments of original plasters with paintings.
Cachtice castle is today a monument with historical and cultural significance. Its ruins testify to the rich history of the region and offer visitors the opportunity to get closer to the history of Hungarian defence and the influence of various historical personalities on this territory. The visit to the Cachtice Castle is a valuable experience for everyone interesting about the history and architecture of Slovakia.

Tips for visitors
Cachtice castle is best visited in autumn, when deciduous trees change color and create a dramatic contrast with stone ruins. Spring brings green landscapes, but it can be humid. On the terrain around the castle, which is uneven and stone, we recommend solid shoes with a good heel and a heat layer in a cooler period. Ideal for photography is in the morning or late afternoon when the side light highlights the texture of the old stone and the depth of the view from the castle hill. The surroundings are just the village Čachtice, where you can explore the historical centre and local monuments. The hike to the castle is manageable for families with children, but it is recommended to take care of safety when moving in ruins and preventing children from meeting in dangerous recesses or at the edges.

For children
I'll tell you a true magic story about the Cachtice Castle, which hoveres over the picturesque village of Cachtice as royal stubbornness. In the early years of the 13th century, the state forces in Slovakia and Hungary were very concerned because they often met directly with their military forces. So they decided to build the castle Čachtice as a protective city on the western border of Hungary. Imagine that it is like a border obeisance in the age of ancient engravings, where hidden guards stood up for defense against unknown enemies.
