Považský castle, also known as Bystrica castle, is a historical ruin on a steep hill above the right bank of Váh near Považská Bystrica in Trenčín region.

Precise evidence of the establishment of Považský castle is not preserved. According to unverified reports, it was built in 1128 to protect the Považská road. The first recorded mention of the Bystrica castle comes from the year 1316. In 1458 King Matthew donated it to the Podmanicks, especially to John and Rafael. New owners repaired and expanded castle buildings. The fire in 1543 damaged the buildings; during the repair were modified architectural elements and added front. After the Podmanicks died in 1558 the castle was taken over by the Balasses, who modified the old palace and other buildings. In 1631 they left the castle and moved to a new Renaissance mansion in the lower garden. In 1684 the castle was besieged by the army of Emperor Leopold I, who was previously occupied by the Tököli armies. In 1698 the emperor had him destroyed so that he would not become the seat of the rebels. In 1895 the castle was bought by Baron Popper.

The first parts of Považský castle included the tower at the highest point and the Gothic palace. Oval front fence surrounded the castle wall, which from the northeast protected two prism towers. The access road from the northeast is still visible in the field. The entrance gate was protected by a prism tower with a barbacan. The walls of the palace, towers and fortifications have been partially preserved. On the palace are visible window openings, places with preserved Renaissance Romans. Only parts of walls or foundations are visible from farm buildings in the courtyard. In some areas there are remnants of Renaissance vaults.

Považský castle is accessible through Považské Podhradie, the local part of Považská Bystrica. The access leads by the road from the bus platform in Považská Bystrica through the village near the church and Baroque manor house, followed by the mark around the Renaissance manor house steeply up to the walls.

The Monument Office of the Slovak Republic records Považský castle under number ÚZPF 760. There are 16 objects: cannon bastion (forewall), castle courtyards i. and ii., castle palaces i.-iv., defense tower, gate bastion, parking wall, wall and access ramp.

Welcome, dear visitor. Right now, you are standing in front of one of the silent witnesses of our history, in front of Považský Castle. Stop for a moment, take a breath and see the atmosphere of this place. When you look in front of you, you will see the remains of the building that has ever dominated this country and has guarded the surroundings with a proud attitude. Although we can no longer see the castle in its full shape, the place itself still radiates with the force and history that has been taking place here for many centuries. Give this moment behind the gate to the past when these walls were the centre of power, security and strategic planning. Let us now look together at how this place originated and what its original meaning was. Považský castle, which is known in many inventories also under the name Bystrica castle, is closely connected with the fate of the whole region of Považská Bystrica and Trenčín region. Although the exact chronology of its origin is not known with absolute certainty today, there is very interesting information in historical documents. According to unverified reports, the castle could be built in 1128. If this report were to be confirmed, it would mean that the castle was created in the early Middle Ages, when it was necessary to create fortifications in strategic places. The main reason for its construction was the protection of the Považská road. This journey was not merely a path in the country, but it represented a key transport artery through which traders, soldiers and messengers raced. Thus, the castle served as a tireless guard who supervised transport safety and protected the territory from unexpected attacks. Now that we are aware of the strategic importance of this place, see the architecture that surrounds you. As you look around, try imagining to complete what has been erased by time and history. Note the terrain and take the highest point. It was there, at this strategic peak, that one of the first and most important parts of the castle - the tower. The tower was the heart of defense, a place from which the guards had a perfect view of the entire valley and could warn the surroundings of the coming danger in time. Apart from the tower, the first and most important parts of the castle were the Gothic palace. Gothic, with its distinctive lines and emphasis on verticalness, gave the castle not only the necessary strength, but also a representative look, which should express the power and status of its owners. Also note the location of the gate. It was the gate that was the critical point of every castle; it was the boundary between the safe inner space and the uncertainty of the outside world. Although only fragments can be seen today, it was instead of strictly controlling anyone who wanted to enter the castle complex. Each castle has its own stories, and although the names of particular architects or many personalities that worked here have been erased by time, the history of Považský hrad is marked by a dramatic twist. The most striking moment that changed the face of this place forever was 1698. During this period, the Kingdom was experiencing a period of unrest and political tension. Emperor Leopold I. decided to take a radical step. To prevent Považsky Castle from becoming the seat of insurgents and support for further rebellion against the imperial power, he allowed the castle to be deliberately destroyed. Imagine that moment - the castle that for centuries protected the roads and people was destroyed not by the enemy from far, but by the decision of the ruler to become intolerable for those who would like to use it as a basis for resistance. This decision marked the end of the castle as a functional military and administrative centre and the beginning of its slow transformation into ruins that we see today. This tragic end of the castle, however, opens the way for one great mystery that still interests historians and lovers of old age. It's a question of his exact conception. This year 1128 remains an unverified message, making the castle a place full of questions. Was it really one of the oldest castles in this area? Who exactly gave the foundation stone, and what secrets do the layers of the earth hide under our feet? It is this uncertainty that gives Považský castle special charm. When you move in this way between the remains of the walls, you may feel that history is not just about the dates in the books but about the feelings, the power, the fear of the uprising, and the desire to control the land. Now that you know the basic lines of the fate of this place, I invite you to walk on the grounds in peace. Feel the silence that today replaces the noise of warlords and merchants, and try to imagine what the castle looked like at the time of its greatest glory when its tower stood proudly above Považie. Look at the stones that survived the imperial orders and centuries of rain and wind. Each of them tells his own story about resilience and passing. Považský castle is today a place of reflection. It is a reminder that nothing is eternal, but that the trail we leave in the country can last for thousands of years. I hope that this short trip to the past has helped you to better understand the value of this place and that you have felt the connection with the people who have lived here forever, guarded and fought. Thank you for your attention and for sharing these moments with us. Now you can continue your research at your own pace. Let your curiosity guide you and enjoy the beauty of the Trencin region. May this day bring you many new ones from uncoverings and pleasant experiences. Have a good and happy journey with your next steps. We say goodbye to you, but Považský castle remains here to welcome you again at any time.

Although some ancient scriptures speak of 1128, its history officially began in 1316. You think it was like a conquest game? After all, castles like jewels were dressed with locks and strong arms.
