The castle Čičva is a ruin from the 13th century, which is located on the forested tip of the Beskydy Predhorium in the subtotal Mernícka pahorkatina above the village Sedliská (local part of Podčičva). It is located south of the water reservoir Veľká Domaša at an altitude of 205 m.

The first mention of the territory dates back to 1270 when the Hungarian King Stephen V. brought it to Nobleman Reynold. In the deed of 1316 the castle is mentioned as Chychowa or Chychua castrum. It was probably built between 1309 and 1316 as a guard fortress at the pass Polish Gate (Porta Polonica). The castle was the center of the estate comprising more than 60 villages.

According to the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic it is a Gothic building, which was declared a cultural monument in 1963.

In 1316 kastelán Mikuláš Peres acquired the property of Tuzser for defending the castle from the attack of Peter, son of Peter Peteň. During the defense castelan lost his left hand and several crew members lost their lives. In 1527 the castle was conquered and burned down by Jan Zápoľský, which burned down the archives of Zemplínska stool, which was located in the castle. In 1575 the castle was acquired by the Bátorii family through the bride's dowry of Elizabeth Báária. In 1610 the castle became the property of the Drugets through Katarína Bátoriová, wife of Juraj Druget from Humenné. In 1684 the castle was conquered by Tököli's troops, and in 1704 it was captured by the troops of František II. Rákoci. After the uprising, the damaged parts of the castle were repaired, but in 1711 Count František Barkóci bowed to the imperial armies and handed over the castle to General Laucken, who then demolished it.

Since 2014 reconstruction and rescue of the castle is carried out by the civic association Pro futuro castle Čičva. The area is freely accessible and its surroundings are cleaned from the floodplains.

Several tourist routes lead to the castle. The shortest one runs along the green mark from Podčičva (the village of Sedliská) and lasts about 20 minutes. The alternative output leads from the village of Benkovce to the green mark and takes almost two hours. From Vranov nad Topľou leads the blue mark through the Dubina crossroads, from where the green mark continues, which takes about 3 hours and 5 minutes.

Welcome to the ruins of Čičva Castle. You are standing in a place that bears the echoes of the ancient centuries and guards a peaceful landscape near the village Sedliska. When you raise your eyes to the sky, the remnants of the former mighty mansion that once dominated the entire neighborhood stand before you. Although you can see today, above all, the stone testimony of the past, see this atmosphere soaked in history. It was here, in this strategic place, that the fates of the whole region were once decided.

Let us now go back in time to the time when the story of this castle began to be written. Although the exact date of its origin remains shrouded in mystery, historical sources suggest that it was probably built between 1309 and 1316. His main mission was to protect and guard an important passage known as the Polish Gate. The castle was not just a military fortress, but it became an important administrative and economic centre. Imagine that his report included more than sixty surrounding villages, making it the real center of power in this region.

When you look at the remains of the masonry in front of you, note how these stones try to resist the tooth of time. Although we don't see fancy halls or decorated facades today, the very majesty of the remaining walls tells of the importance of this place in the past. Feel the fragmentation of the terrain and how the castle naturally rises from the surrounding hill. This position was the key to his defensive function. Try to imagine the view that was provided from here by the then guards, who from above controlled the movement on the trade routes to the northern border.

The history of the castle has not always been peaceful. It is linked to the many dramatic events and fates of the people who lived and fought here. One such story is the defense of the castle in 1316. During that time, the castle was fought hard and the then castelan Mikuláš Peres showed immense courage in his defense, for which he paid a high price - he lost his left hand in the fight. This story reminds us that behind every stone you see here is human destiny, pain and determination to defend your homes. The castle also experienced times of destruction, such as in 1527, when it was set on fire by John the Zápoľsky. In the course of this fire, the site suffered considerable damage, which was signed up to its further development.

It's fascinating to think about how many secrets these ruins hide. Although we know some historical milestones, many details about life in the castle, its exact building changes, or the people who lived in it remain a mystery to us. It is this uncertainty that gives the place a sense of mystery. When you walk in the vicinity of these historical remnants, you can only guess what conversations were held in the rooms that used to stand here and what secret plans were made at the time of the threat.

I hope you are interested in this short excursion to the past of Čičva Castle and that the view of these ancient walls will encourage you to discover yourself. I invite you to take a peaceful look at this place, to perceive its unique energy, and to let the spirit of ancient times act upon you. Every corner of this area has its own story and it's up to you how deep you dive into it. Thank you for your attention and I wish you many nice experiences in getting to know the history of our region. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The ideal time to visit Čičva Castle is during late spring or early autumn. The castle can be reached by foot from the village Sedliská. We recommend choosing strong shoes suitable for terrain, as it is a ruin with unpaved surface. Do not forget to pack enough water and snacks because there are no catering facilities in the castle area.

For photographers, the castle offers the best light conditions during a gold watch. For families with children, the climb to the castle is a pleasant adventure, but due to the nature of the ruin, constant supervision of children is necessary near the perimeter walls and uneven terrain.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring at Čičva Castle brings a gradual awakening of nature. The surrounding vegetation greens and ruins emerge from the receding winter gray. During this period light is soft, which ideally supports photography of the details of stone architecture. Solid shoes suitable for wet terrain are recommended as access paths can be muddy after melting the snow. Layered clothing is essential because spring weather is variable and we often feel a cold wind at the height of the castle.

Summer surrounds the castle with lush greenery that contrasts with ancient masonry. The sun's rays in the noon fall inside the ruins and enhance the texture of the stone, but it is more suitable for visiting early morning or evening. Don't forget the head cover, plenty of fluids and insect repellent. Airy, yet solid, clothing ensures comfort when moving in a divided terrain.

Autumn gives the castle Čičve melancholy and mysterious atmosphere. The fading leaves and morning mist in the valleys below the castle mountain reinforce this doom. The golden coloring of the trees provides beautiful views of the surrounding landscape, while the light is warm and the low sun creates long, dramatic shadows. When visiting in the autumn months, it is necessary to have a windshield and a warmer layer of clothing, because with the arrival of the evening the temperature drops. The terrain may be slippery due to wet leaves.

Winter transforms Čičva castle into a quiet and quiet place. Surowa's beauty of preserved walls contrasts with white snow cover. Visibility to the surroundings is best, since trees are leafless. Visiting requires quality winter shoes with non-slip soles and warm, waterproof clothing. Days are very short, so it is best to plan the output at noon, when light is the most intense and the air temperature is the highest.
