The Franciscan monastery in Bardejov on the street of Franciscans forms a complex with the Baroque church of St. John the Baptist. The building comes from the 14th century.

Background and historical context

The original church was established on the site of the older Augustian Gothic church. Dating the beginning of construction varies - some sources report 1380, others 1466. Augustian canonical order began to build a new Gothic church around 1466. The construction was completed in the 16th century by Š. Lapicida a.k.a. Pfeyler and his assistants after the widow's contribution to Anton.

Architecture and visual design

The church passed from Gothic to Baroque style. It has a longitudinal single-ship structure with a polygonal presbytery and a support system with original Gothic pillars after adjustments. In the presbytery there are broken windows, in the rest of the space semicircular. The facade consists of an uneven wall surface, a stone roofing ledge and a shallow saddle roof with a sanctusník.

Owners, administrators, fates

After a short period held by Protestants, the church was handed over in 1670 to the Franciscans under the auspices of Emperor Leopold. After the fires (especially in 1670) and the earthquake in 1725 the Franciscans converted the church and monastery into a baroque form.

Key events and attractions

In 1670 the church burned down and was then repaired. In 1728 they explained three new bells - John the Baptist, Saint Francis and Saint Anton the Paduan. In 1780 a large altar was built for 500 Ryne gold, which required walling the window towards the square.

Today

The Franciscan monastery in Bardejov (typical number 1781/1) is open to the public. After the reconstruction, the walled gothic window was immediately opened. The interior contains neo-Gothic paintings and altars from the second half of the 19th century; the latest repairs took place in 1990.

Welcome to Bardejov, one of the most beautiful and historically important places in Slovakia, where every street and every stonestone tells stories about the past. You stand right in front of one of the most important spiritual and architectural points of this city - the Franciscan monastery complex and the church of St. John the Baptist. Before we go into more detailed discussions, just stop for a moment and see the atmosphere of the place. Prepare your headphones, relax, and let yourself be carried away by the time that is so unusual around you. Now that you look at this monumental whole, you are likely to be immediately addressed by the Baroque harmony and balance of the entire complex. You see in front of you buildings that operate in a uniform manner, as if they were designed at one time to form one integrated architectural unit. It is this Baroque form you are seeing today, but it is the result of a long and sometimes tragic process that has lasted for centuries. This monastery is not just a building; it is a living chronicler of the city, who survived periods of prosperity and times of great firepower. In order to understand what you are seeing today, we need to get back to the origins of this place in our thoughts. Although baroque shapes dominate today, the foundations and the very soul of this place are much older. The whole story began in the mid - 15th century. Just around 1466 the church and monastery of Augustians began to be built here. At that time, architecture was quite different - Gothic rule, with its vertical lines and raw force. At the time there was not what you see today, but there was another world, a different rhythm of life, and another visual language. The Augustians laid stones that still form the foundation of the complex, and although their original style changed over time, their strict presence in Bardejov left an indelible mark. Over time, however, history began to spin in a different direction. Franciscans moved to the monastery, bringing new traditions and a new spiritual approach. However, history is not always about peaceful building. For this monastery came times that tested the power not only of buildings but also of the people who lived here. If you now look at the facades and overall structure, you may not be able to explain why this complex is so coherent and harmonious. The answer lies in the tragic events of the eighteenth century. In 1725 the city and its monastery found themselves in a band of great disasters. First, a devastating fire struck the buildings and threatened their existence, and then an earthquake struck them. Such events are always critical to historical buildings. It could mean the end of this place, but instead it became the beginning of its new era. After these disasters, the Franciscans decided to change radically. Instead of just trying to restore the old Gothic state, they decided to transform. They took advantage of the opportunity to transform the church and the monastery into the Baroque form you see before your eyes today. It was this restoration after great efforts that gave the complex its present, majestic character. Now that you know the historical context, try to look at the architecture a little more closely. Consider the transition between what was once and what is today. Although it is the dominant style of the baroque, which is known for its dynamism, richness and effort to express emotions, Gothic history is still pulsing beneath its surface. When you look at the overall geometry of buildings, see their volume and the way they dominate the surrounding space. The Baroque architecture you see here is not only about decorations, but about creating a space to reach out to and arouse a person. See how the individual parts of the monastery and the church join together in one whole, as the lines of buildings intersect and create a harmonious picture that has survived centuries. Although history has not told us the names of all the individual architects or every single monk who lived here, you see their presence in every detail. It is an anonymous but extremely strong presence of thousands of people who have worked here, prayed and kept this place running. When you look at the walls, think of those builders who raised these walls again after fires and earthquakes. Their determination is in every stone you see today. We can now look at one interesting thing that might interest you. It's fascinating how architecture can adapt to tragedy. It is often thought that history is linear, that it is only moving forward. But this monastery shows us that history is more like a cycle. The destruction caused by fire and earth in 1725 did not happen only in the end of the old world, but became a catalyst for the creation of something new and even more beautiful. This transition from Gothic to Baroque is not just a change of style, it is a symbol of man's survival and ability to build something new from rubble. That is the real magic of this place - the ability to transform. Now that you have learned the basic information and are aware of the atmosphere of this baroque complex, I suggest you continue your tour. Bardejov is full of other treasures waiting to be discovered. Don't forget to stop by other historical buildings, see the silence in God's houses and watch the light turn into the facade of old houses. Thank you for spending this moment with us and paying attention to this important place. We believe that this short story has helped you to better understand the beauty and depth of the Franciscan monastery and the church of St. John the Baptist. We wish you a pleasant and inspiring rest of the day in this breathtaking history of the city. We'll say goodbye, but keep that trail in your heart that history has left behind.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the Franciscan monastery is autumn and spring when light is soft and natural. This time of year highlights the texture of historical walls. For photographers are the most interesting angles from the exterior, where the game of light and shadow create details of the monastery complex. It is best to take pictures during so-called "golden hours." When visiting, take comfortable shoes suitable for walking around the historical parts of the city and possibly a camera for capturing the details of the building. Families with children can use the time to discover architectural elements together while walking around the monastery.
