The town castle in Kremnica in Banská Bystrica region forms the late Gothic church of St. Catherine Alexandria and fortification system. The complex was built by the townspeople in the 14th and 15th centuries for proper and defensive purposes, which differs from the settlements of rulers or feudals.

Construction of the castle is related to the establishment of the city of the Hungarian ruler Karol Róbert from Anjou in 1328, when the town obtained the privileges of self-government and judicial autonomy. In the 14th century, there was an area with two parallel lines of walls, where the royal representative, the Comorian Count, could also reside. The oldest building in the area is the carner of St. Ondrej from the first half of the 13th century, which originally served as osario and chapel.

The architectonic whole includes 14 objects, including the two-ship church of St. Catherine Alexandria with the tower. The interior of the church was rebuilt around 1400 on a double boat with a central arcade belt. The sanctuary was built in approximately 1480 and the church was consecrated in 1488. In the 1980s, changes were made to the portals, arches and oratories. Fortification consists of Gothic wall walls, gate towers, bastions and remains of the old town hall. In the interior of the carner there are Gothic paintings with scenes from the life of St.

The area changed its use. During the Reformation, the kaner chapel served as an armory and returned to sacral purpose after 1715. There is a Baroque statue of the Virgin Mary Immaculata from the years 1760 to 1765, to which between 1972 and 1976 a copy was added.

The town castle in Kremnica is registered by the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic under the number ÚZPF 2272.

Welcome to Kremnica, where history meets the majesty of mining tradition. Right now, you are standing in front of the City Castle, a landmark that proudly rises above this precious mining city. When you look up, you will see a complex of structures that form the heart of the Kremnica fortification. This castle is unique and different from many others you may have visited so far. While most of the castles in our country served as the seat of powerful rulers or rich feudals, this castle was built by the townspeople themselves. It was built for proper and defensive purposes to protect the wealth and security of the city's inhabitants, which was one of the most important centers in Hungary thanks to gold mining.

Let's take a look together at what makes this place so special. The area you have before you is the result of a long historical development, although the exact dates of creation of the individual parts remain shrouded in mystery. It is this uncertainty that gives the place a sense of mystery. When you look at the individual parts of the fortification, see the atmosphere that has survived for centuries. The oldest building in the entire area is the Carner of St. Andrew, who comes from the first half of the 13th century. Originally, this building was not for defence purposes, but as a osario and chapel. If you take a closer look at its architecture, note how sensitive this object is to the overall castle space. In the interior of the carner there are rare Gothic elements, which testify to the high level of craft art of the time.

When walking around the walls, realize that you are standing not only in front of the castle, but in front of the symbol of freedom and independence of Kremnica townspeople. These people were able to build a fortification system that resisted many time trials. Although the names of particular architects who participated in the construction remain unknown in historical sources, their legacy is present in every stone and in every corner of the complex. It is fascinating to imagine how the city's fate was once decided in these areas, how gold was stored here, and how the city's inhabitants were preparing to defend their homes.

Stop for a moment and see the silence that exists. It's the silence that bears the echoes of the past. The town castle in Kremnica is not just a set of buildings, it is a testimony to the time when the townspeople were able to take the administration of their things into their own hands. It is this fact that makes it so different from the royal settlements. Here, in this place, you feel the spirit of the medieval city, which was thanks to the mining of precious metals the engine of the economy of the whole region.

If you look at the details of the structures you have before your eyes, see how the individual parts of the fortification unit together. It's harmonious, although it's been tested by years. Every wall, every window, every part of the fortification has a story, even though many of them have long spent their time. It is this incompleteness of historical facts that gives your imagination room. You can imagine how the people who centuries ago were building the foundations of our culture today moved in these areas.

I invite you to go through this area at your own pace. Feel every detail, every change of light on ancient walls, and let the atmosphere of this place affect you. Kremnica has many secrets and the city castle is the largest of them. Let's move on together and explore the other corners of this area, which will reveal more about how it lived here and how this city defended itself from the dangers of the world. Thank you for your attention and I wish you to take unforgettable experiences from your visit to Kremnica. Let this walk be an inspiration for you to learn more about our rich history. Welcome to the heart of mining and enjoy every minute spent in this historic place.

Tips for visitors

Kremnica town castle is suitable to visit during working days in the morning, when there are fewer visitors in the area. Spring and autumn provide suitable lighting conditions for photographing Gothic architectural details.

When taking pictures of the area you can use the view from the castle bastions overlooking the historic city center. Suitable light to capture the details of the fortification and the church is soon after sunrise or before sunset.

To visit the castle, comfortable shoes with fixed soles are recommended due to historical pavement and steeper access routes. Layered clothing is also suitable, as it tends to be cooler in the towers and around the church.

The area of the castle with fortifications and shooting places allows for walks and provides a space to familiarize yourself with the history of the city. After a tour of the castle you can visit the historical core of Kremnica.
