The Habán house, located in the Great Levary in the Bratislava region, is an example of a residential building of folk architecture in Slovakia. This house, located in the Monument Reserve, has a brick construction of burnt bricks and residential attic. The Haban architecture developed in Záhorie, where the German colonists habani began to build these houses in the 19th century.

The creation of this architecture is closely linked to the arrival of habans in Slovakia, namely in Záhorie. The Habans settled in this area and began building houses made of materials available in the region. These houses are characterized by their brick structure made of unburnt bricks, which gave them resistance to weather influences. The windows were placed in ridged shield structures and the slam roof was soaked in clay, which increased its inflammability.

Architecturally, the Habian house differs from its brick structure made of unburnt bricks and residential attic. The materials were advantageous for their availability and low price, which allowed habans to build their houses resistant to weather. The roof was dealt with atypically - the slums were soaked in clay and after placing on the roof was re-painted with a layer of clay.

Today, the Habian house in the Great Levary is located in the Monument Reserve, where it is part of the Habian Museum. This house is the only complex of Habian architecture preserved in Slovakia and provides information on the life and construction of houses in the 19th century. The Monument Office of the Slovak Republic records this area under the number ÚZPF 2210 where one object - the Folk House.

The Habian House provides information on the life and construction of houses in the 19th century. Its conservation and location in the Great Levary are important for understanding the historical context of Haban architecture in Slovakia. This house is an important monument worth visiting.

Welcome to the Great Levary, in the heart of the Bratislava region, where the time has stopped for a while to allow us to look back. You stand in front of one of the most precious witnesses of our folk architecture, in front of the Haban house. The first thing you'll probably think of when you look at this building is its humility and fascinating authenticity. It is not a monumental building with rich ornaments, but it is in this simplicity that its true value lies. Feel the atmosphere of this place and try to imagine what this house looked like many decades ago, when it pulsed the lives of people who brought their unique customs and craft knowledge to this country.

To understand why this house is so special, we have to crash in the 19th century. It was during this period that the Habs reached Záhorie. Who were these people? They were members of the Anabaptist religious movement who sought refuge and peace so that they could live by their principles. They did not only correct their coming to our ends with spiritual needs but also brought with them extremely advanced technical and building knowledge. They began to build their homes from materials that they had in the area, and so an architecture was created that perfectly tuned with the country of Záhorie. This house you are facing is a direct result of this historic process. This is an example of how practicality and local raw materials were combined in the 19th century and the need to create a stable home for the family and their craft.

Now I ask you to pay full attention to the details of the construction itself. Look closer at the walls of the house. Note their texture and material. Unlike later buildings that have already used burnt bricks, this house has a brick structure made of unburnt bricks. Imagine the process: clay that was formed and dried in the sun and air, without using the high temperatures of the furnace. It is this technique that gives the house its distinctive appearance and natural colour, which is so beautifully associated with the soil under your feet. This is a fascinating example of sustainability, which we are looking for today in modern architecture, but which was a natural part of their lives for Habans in the 19th century.

While enjoying the view of the walls, lift your eyes up to the roof. What you see is one of the most prominent elements of Habian architecture in Záhorie. It is a straw roof, but it is not ordinary. To be more resistant to rain, wind and time, the straw was soaked in clay. This layer of clay worked as a natural cover that protected the interior from moisture while helping to maintain a stable temperature in the house. When you look at this roof, you see basically the symbiosis of the plant world and minerals from the local environment. It is a detail that we see seldom today in our country and which makes this house a real jewel of folk construction.

In addition to wall materials and roofs, note the overall layout of the building. The characteristic element typical of the Habs houses in this area is the residential attic. At the time, the attic was not perceived as a mere storage space or a place for animals, but was a full part of the living area. This use of space suggests a rational approach of habans to housing. All available space had to be used efficiently to provide maximum comfort and functionality within one building.

Although we do not know the names of the specific architects who designed this house or the names of the particular personalities who lived there, you feel their presence in every detail. The Habans were known for their precision and industriousness. Their approach to life was made of discipline and humility, which is reflected in this construction. They didn't have to build palaces to leave a mark in history. All they had to do was create something functional, strong and in harmony with nature. It is this philosophy that makes the Haban house in Great Levary more than just an old building; it is a monument to human endurance and craft art.

Perhaps you are now wondering what is the greatest mystery or attraction of this place. Consider how different this building is from the ordinary cottage you may see in other parts of Slovakia. The secret lies in that connection of unburned bricks and clay straw. In many regions, houses made of such materials simply disappeared over time, fell apart under the influence of moisture, or were replaced by modern buildings. It is almost a miracle that this house has survived to this day and still stands before you. It is proof of the quality of the work of the Habans and, at the same time, I testify to how the right materials and techniques can overcome centuries. It is a quiet conversation between the past and the present, reminding us that true value is not in luxury, but in authenticity and durability.

As you walk around the house now, try to imagine the silence that ruled here in the 19th century, interrupted only by the sounds of work and conversations in the Habian dialect. Feel the texture of the walls, and feel the spirit of those who have come from far away to find their home. This house is not only part of the Bratislava region, it is part of our common cultural identity, which tells us about the tolerance, craft and deep relationship of man to the land on which he lives.

I hope this short trip to the world of Haban architecture has helped you to better understand the value of this unique place. Now I invite you to leave your house in no hurry. Go around it slowly, look at it from different angles, and try to imagine how it would live in such a space today. Let yourself be guided by your curiosity and note how light is reflected from clay walls. After your tour you will find other attractions of this beautiful area to help you complete the picture of the history of the Záhorie. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant continuation of discovering the beauty of our country. May this humble house inspire you to seek beauty in simplicity. We say goodbye, but the stories of these walls remain with you.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the neighborhood of the Haban house in the Great Levary wakes up to life. It is recommended to put on layered clothing that can handle variable weather conditions. The perfect time to visit are the morning hours.

Summer season brings intense sunlight and full bloom meadows around the house. In order to avoid the greatest crowds and the hot sun, we recommend coming right at the opening. Do not forget light, breathable clothing, head cover, and plenty of drinking water.

Autumn dresses the landscape around the memorial into golden and brown tones. The murky mornings give the Habian house a mysterious look. Due to humidity and colder temperatures, waterproof shoes and light sweater are suitable.
