Stone villa, Art Nouveau architectural monument located on Horná street 69 in Banská Bystrica, is today the seat of the branch ČSOB. This object is a recognised cultural record of the Slovak Republic and represents one of the valuable Art Nouveau monuments in this area.

The villa was built in 1920 by architect Alois Peierberger. After its creation, the object was purchased to the family of businessman Leopold Munels, who owned a liqueur in Banská Bystrica. The architecture of Stone House is characterized by a rich artistic and plastic expression, which represents the popular symptoms of Art Nouveau.

In 1995 there was an architectural competition for the reconstruction of the original building. Welcome project was carried out in 1997 by Ing. arch. Branislav Somora. The reconstruction was designed to complement the new ports with the original matter and preserve the Art Nouveau aesthetics. The author was sensitive to the environment in which the reconstruction was entering and aimed at ensuring that the new ports do not cover the original elements but complement them.

The historical part of the building was preserved without new elements. During the reconstruction, the author inspired the historical facade and details, which are also visible to the public above the management premises. To lighten the attic was used Art Nouveau motif of the second ledge in the form of a band of windows.

The construction was designed to show a sense of artistic richness and traditional craft detail. The street façade of the extension carries the balance between bank excellency and surrounding materials, making it visibly more elegant than surrounding buildings. Floor plan shape The original object was finished in a square. In the third floor, however, the new matter retreats in the arc, thus revealing the view of the original facade and creating space for the terrace complemented by greenery. The extension has a flat roof with a significantly laid ledge below which there are superelevated slit windows.

The layout of the Stone House is as follows: first floor contains spaces for employees, safes and fast handling areas. The second floor of the historic building provides a room for liquidity and is accessible by an outdoor staircase. Other floors serve the administrative offices of ČSOB, while between historical and new matter there is a green terrace accessible from the meeting room.

Today, Kamenná villa is the seat of the ČSOB branch and is worth a visit as an example of successful reconstruction, which has preserved historical value and added modern additions. This object is an important witness to the Art Nouveau in Slovakia and its visit offers an overview of the architectural past of Banská Bystrica.

The monument office of the Slovak Republic records the Stone Villa under number ÚZPF 10020. This object is popularly called Kamenna vili and the original owner of Leopold Munels was known for its liqueur in Banská Bystrica. The reconstruction completed the original ground plan shape L into the shape of a square, which added a new dimension to this architectural monument.

Stone villa is one of the valuable Art Nouveau monuments in Banská Bystrica and its reconstruction combines the richness of Art Nouveau with the tendencies of late modernity. This object is an important example of how historical architecture can be preserved and updated for the needs of the present.

A visit to Stone House offers a unique view of the Art Nouveau and its influence on the architecture of Banská Bystrica. This object is an important part of the cultural heritage of Slovakia and its visit is recommended to anyone interested in historical architecture and its development.

Welcome to Banská Bystrica. You are standing in a place where history meets the everyday life of the city, and right in front of your eyes there is an object that carries a quiet elegance and the power of stone duration. Look at this stone villa. Try to stop for a moment, leave the noise of the round streets behind and just perceive its presence. This building is not just a set of walls and windows; it is a witness to the time that has been going on for over a century. Feel the atmosphere emitted by its massive construction and the way it fits into the region's environment.

When you look at it, you might wonder what stories these walls could tell if they had a voice. To understand them, we must return to 1920. It was a fascinating time, an era full of changes and a new beginning. It was then that architect Alois Peierberger planned and implemented this construction. He created a house that was supposed to be more than just a haven of bad weather; it was supposed to be an expression of stability and aesthetic taste in the period when the modern character of our city was formed. Architect Peierberger put into this project the current vision, which today, after hundreds of years, still tries to communicate with everyone who stands before him.

Now that you've learned the first impression, pay attention to the one who made this villa even for. Home is not just a space, it is a reflection of the identity of its owner. The original owner of this prestigious residence was the entrepreneur Leopold Munels. Munels was a man who worked in Banská Bystrica at the time. He owned a local liqueur, which at that time meant not only economic success but also a certain social status. Imagine this villa as a symbol of its business success. Every detail you see here was in a certain spirit linked to the prosperity and dynamism it brought to the local economy. This villa was his personal expression in stone, a place that should reflect the quality and prestige of his own business.

Let us now take a closer look at the architecture itself and what you see right in front of you. You may not notice that this building, as you see it today, is not entirely identical to what stood here centuries ago. It has a fascinating transformation process hidden. If you could return to 1920, you would see a villa in the original asymmetrical shape of the letter L. This shape was probably then chosen for specific needs of privacy or light orientation. However, a fundamental architectural decision was made during the later reconstruction. Original shape L was completed and adapted to take the form of a square. This transition from asymmetry to symmetry is fascinating. It changed the whole geometry of the object, gave it a new balance and maybe a new force that you see right now when you look at it as a compact whole.

Now pay attention to one of the most interesting details you can capture from this place. Look up, on level three. Note how this new building matter changes. It's not just a straight, fixed block. On the third floor this matter begins to surrender from you in a gentle, elegant cloud. This detail is crucial. It is this cloud that creates a dynamic and game of light and shadow that breaks the strength of a square shape. It is the moment when architecture begins to move, when it becomes more than a static building. This cloud is a visual proof that it was important to maintain aesthetic elegance and let the building breathe even in the reconstruction and shape change.

At this point, you may wonder what happened in this villa during all these years. Although we don't know every name that ever crossed the threshold here, we see life signs. In every stone, in every circle of the third floor is to feel the presence of people who have built their dreams here, managed their stores and perceived the world around them from these windows. It is mysterious that although the names of many people are forgotten in the dust of time, their influence on how we perceive this place today remains indelible.

You are facing an object that is a living story about change, the ambitions of one businessman and the visions of an architect. Villa in Banska Bystrica is not only a memory of the past, it is a dialogue between the old shape of the letter L and the new, symmetrical form of the square. It is a dialogue between the tradition of the liqueur industry and the modern architecture of the early twentieth century.

We believe that this brief look at the history of this stone villa helped you to perceive it deeper. As you continue your tour of the city, try to take this feeling with you - the feeling that each building has its hidden face and its own rhythm. We wish you a wonderful walk in Banská Bystrica and hope that other historical attractions will still love you in this way. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

Jaro: In spring the villa is surrounded by green vegetation. Morning light highlights the details of architecture. We recommend layered clothing for unstable weather. There are fewer visitors at this time.

Summer: Summer brings long days and intense glow. The vegetation around the building provides shade. In the main season we recommend a visit in the morning to avoid heat and crowds. Remember light clothes and plenty of fluids.

Autumn: Autumn vegetation has golden and brown tones. Early fog and light highlight the texture of the stone. We recommend comfortable shoes and finer clothes, especially at sunset.

Winter: In winter months the surrounding area is often covered with snow, creating contrast with architecture. We recommend to verify the opening time in advance, which is shorter. For walks you need warm and insurmountable clothes.
