The construction of the temple is rustic. The exterior is lined with vertical boards with rails that were restored in 2001. Before the portal there is a small entrance hall with shingle roof. We welcome you to the village of Šemetkovce, in the heart of the Prešov region, where a silent witness of ancient times and deep faith now stands before you. Look ahead at St. Michael's temple. The first thing that you are likely to be interested in here is its authentic form and peaceful atmosphere, which this space will cover. You are standing in front of a wooden three-space Greek-Catholic temple, which is a great and rare example of folk construction, which is characteristic of Eastern Slovakia. Notice how organically it fits into the surroundings and how it carries the spirit of ancestors who built it many years ago with the materials provided by local nature. Now let's rush deeper into the history of this place. This temple was built not only as a religious object but as a center of spiritual life for the local inhabitants. Its construction dates back to 1752. Imagine, then, that this object has been in this place for almost three hundred years. At that time the buildings were not designed by famous architects from large cities, but they were created in the hands of local masters who mastered the art of working with wood. That is where the great value of this temple lies - it is not the product of academic architecture, but the result of folk skills and piety, which is reflected in every detail. Now, when you play the exterior of the temple closer, see its overall composition. It is a three-space building, which means that its layout is divided into three parts, which is typical for Greek Catholic temple buildings of this type. If you look at the outer walls, you can notice vertical boards with rails. This detail can only be examined superficially at first sight, but it is actually the result of the careful recovery that took place in 2001 in order to preserve the original aesthetics and protect the wood from the adverse effects of the weather. Along with the church, the bell tower is formed, which complements the silhouette of this monument and reminds us how important the sound of bells was for communication and rhythm of life in old Slovak villages. Let us change the view from exterior to interior, which conceals real jewels. If you enter, feel the smell of old wood and the silence that surrounds you. Your main focus should be baroque chaff wooden iconostasis. Iconostas is a key element in Greek Catholic tradition that separates the room for believers from the holy area of the altar. This particular piece comes from the second half of the 18th century. Look at its precise elaboration and at the so-called Tsar's door that is characteristic of this type of device. The whole iconostasis along with the altar went through a thorough restoration between 1969 and 1970, so you can admire the details in almost original condition. Looking at the altar, please note one very interesting detail that can be overlooked at first sight. There are miniature Ancient columns. It is fascinating to see how elements inspired by Ancient architecture have reached the folk wooden church in eastern Slovakia. It is evidence that even in small villages, people sought aesthetic perfection and brought to their temples the influences they then considered to be the peak of beauty and grandeur. However, the history of this temple is not only a story of beauty and faith, but also a story of survival and resilience. If you look at the walls of the temple, you may not imagine that this place witnessed one of the most tragic periods of the 20th century. In 1944, during World War II, there was a Carpathian-Duklian operation in the vicinity of Šemetkovce. Just in the valley of death, located nearby, there was an intense tank battle. The vast amount of ammunition, explosions, and military procedures caused the temple to be severely damaged during this period. It would be sad to think that such a precious monument could have died forever. But here comes a story that may be the most touching of all. The church was not renovated by state authorities or foreign experts, but by the citizens of the municipality themselves. As early as 1945, almost immediately after the end of the battles, the people of Šemetkovce joined together to restore the temple with their own strength, work and sacrifice. This action tells a great deal about the deep relationship locals had with their temple. It was not just a building for them, but a symbol of their identity and community. It is thanks to this local solidarity that we can stand before this object today and admire its beauty. Given its historical and artistic value, Saint Michael's temple was declared a national cultural monument in 1968. This means that it is no longer just a local treasure, but part of the cultural heritage of Slovakia. It is a place where history of war and peace meets, folk craft and Baroque artistic inspiration. When you look around, try to imagine how many generations of people have passed through this door. How many birthdays, sad farewells and silent prayers have been celebrated. This temple is like an open book in which the fates of people from Eastern Slovakia are recorded. From its establishment in 1752, through dramatic events from 1944, to modern restorations in the 21st century, St. Michael's temple remained a permanent point in the line of time. We invite you now to go through the whole object in peace, to see the texture of the wood, and to remember the silent testimony of this place. Let your curiosity guide you and give yourself a moment of meditation on how important it is to protect such monuments for future generations. Thank you for your attention and for discovering the beauty of Šemetkovce with us. We wish you a pleasant rest of the day and a pleasant continuation in your journey through our country.
