The church of St. Nicholas Bishop is a Gothic building from the first half of the 15th century in Bánovce nad Bebravou in Trenčín region. It has Gothic elements and a classicistic altar.

The building stands on the hill in the northeastern part of the city. Although it is said that the construction would begin in 1149 and be completed by Bishop Eduard with the help of the archbishop Job, Nitra bishop Nicholas likely did not. The building itself can be included in the first third of the 15th century. It is believed that the predecessor of the present church was the older Romanesque object. V. Kurth put the beginnings until 1198, which is not substantiated. The written sources from 1232 support the existence of a village served by the church. This is confirmed by the record of the Banish priest John, who paid the highest fee from all the surrounding courses.

It's a gothic object with a jewelry sanctuary. The Gothic layout is highlighted by the main ship, the rebuilt tower, the entrance portal and the seating. The church ship was re-enriched in 1808 and is illuminated by six windows. From the late 17th century comes the brick pulpit and the Baroque extension of sacristy. In the equipment there is a classicistic altar of St. Nicholas from the end of the 18th century, Baroque polychrome wooden sculpture Crucified Christ from the 18th century and a small four-register organ on the chorus.

From the middle of the 16th to the second half of the 17th century the church was used by Protestants. During the Austrian period in Hungary he was taken away by a Catholic and returned in 1709.

In the cellar crypts, Tobiah Baticius, the first rector of the local evangelical grammar school, reportedly rests in 1527. Before entering the church is the grave of Orthodox priest John Crispich. In 1663, he tried to rescue the Turks who were passing through the Basin in Považie, but he was allegedly killed right outside the church door and buried there.

The church stands in the cemetery and is surrounded by part of the stone fence. There are sandstone folk tombstones from the 18th and 19th centuries, probably made by local stonemasons. In 1920 were placed three bells with the names Andrei-Benedict, Cyril-Method and St. Joseph.

In 1989 the object was repaired, where a shingle was replaced on the roof of the church and tower and preserved wooden structure of the roofs. In 1990 the altar was restored. In the early 1990s, forged bars were added to the windows and entrance space created by Nitra artist Juraj Novák.

Welcome to Banovce over Bebravoa. Right now you are standing in front of one of the most important monuments of this city, in front of St. Nicholas' church. When you look at it, you may first sense the peaceful atmosphere of a place that has been accompanying local residents for centuries at all important moments in their lives. This temple is not just a religious building, but a living witness to the history that broke through here, layered and shaped the present form of the city. Look at the overall silhouette of the building and perceive its peace that it carries.

To understand what lies ahead, we must plunge deep into the past. St. Nicholas church is a Gothic building, which comes from the first half of the 15th century. Imagine, then, the time when dense forests were still spread in the area, and life was engraving the natural cycle of nature and faith. Gothic, with its characteristics, represented the peak of construction and spirituality. The history of this church, however, was not simple and straightforward. The building went through a time when Protestants used it, but in a thousand seven hundred and nine, the temple finally returned to the Catholics. This transition reflects wider historical trends and religious currents that then crossed the whole territory of today's Slovakia.

Now, when you perceive the architecture of this temple, take note of its stability and shape. Although the foundation of the building is Gothic, over time there were various modifications that were intended to keep the building in good condition and adapt it to new needs. If you look at the roof of the church and its tower, you can see the result of a comprehensive repair from the year thousand nine hundred eighty-nine. At that time was replaced shingles and performed a thorough preservation of wooden structure, which ensured that the building survives for future generations. Also in the year one thousand eight hundred eight was re-encouraged the church ship, which gave space new freshness and stability.

Let's go now in our minds to cross the threshold and move inside. If you choose to enter, you will see the altar in particular. It is a classicistic altar which represents a completely different aesthetic than the Gothic walls around it. Classicism brought harmony, cleanliness of lines and balance to the interior. This altar went through a detailed restaurant in the year thousand nine hundred ninety, so today you can admire its beauty in full measure. It is a fascinating contrast between medieval Gothic and later classicism, which creates a unique historical dialogue in one area.

In addition to visual details, however, we are accompanied by sounds. If you are lucky and hear the bell ringing, know that there are three bells in the tower that were made and placed here in the year thousand nine hundred twenty. They have their own names: Andrej-Benedict, Cyril-Metod and St. Joseph. These bells are not just metal instruments for reporting time or calling Mass, but they are a symbol of community and continuity. Every note from the tower reminds thousands of people who lived in Bánovce above Bebravoa before us.

Now I want to invite you to focus on the details that are located right around the church and in its deep hidden parts. History is not only in what we see above our heads, but also in what lies under our feet. Tobiah Baticius is said to rest in the church's cellar crypts. If you may not know this name, it would be worth mentioning that it was the first rector of the local evangelical high school. The presence of such a significant personality in crypts testifies to the intellectual and cultural dimension represented by this temple and its surroundings.

Before entering the church, however, there is a detail which is perhaps the most tragic and interesting story of this place. Note the grave of the Orthodox priest John Crispich. According to historical testimony and local stories, this man was killed by the Turks right in this location. It is a freezing reminder of the time when these areas were threatened by the Ottoman invasion and when the threat of war and direction stood right outside the door of the locals. This grave is a silent witness to suffering, but also to the courage of those who protected their faith and their homes in these times.

It's fascinating how one object can connect so many different fates. From the Gothic builders of the fifteenth century, through the religious disputes of the seventeenth and the eightth centuries, to the tragedies associated with the Turkish invadings and modern restaurants of the twentieth century. St. Nicholas' church is not only a building of stone and wood, but it is an archive of the Banese over Bebravoa. Every roof repair, every new bell and every layer of paint on the altar tells a story about the permanence and care that local people have shown to this place.

Now, when you look back at the whole building, try to imagine how many generations of people have passed through this door. How many promises have been made here, how many tears have been shed, and how many prayers have gone up into heaven. See this space as a place to plunge into the past with the present. It is a place where Gothic meets with classicism and where the peaceful atmosphere of the temple contrasts with the dramatic stories of war and death that bind to the tomb of John Cristibius or the crypts of Tobiah Baticia.

Let us now take a moment in silence to see the genius combination of architecture and history. You can butter yourself around the building, look at the details of the facade and think about how the city around this church changed, while he remained as a fixed point of orientation.

Thank you for coming along this short journey in time. Now you can explore in peace the surroundings of St. Nicholas church at your own pace, you can visit the interior and feel the atmosphere of this historic temple. We wish you a pleasant further stay in Bánovce nad Bebravou and a pleasant discovery of other gems of the Trenčín region. Make yourself happy.

Back then, there were no computers, the Internet, or your favorite games. Bánovce over Bebravoa looked completely different.
