Townhouse in Banská Štiavnica in Banská Bystrica region is a solitary Renaissance building from the 15th and 16th centuries. The building is located in a violent terrain and represents the type of townhouse late Renaissance and Baroque.

The building is located on micronámestie as an end corner object. Fixes the original urban situation in relation to main and side communication. Architecturally retained the overall expression and ground plan-space composition, although the concept of facade was partially changed by modification of the parter. The material expression of the house interferes with the missing part of the side wing.

Townhouses in Banská Štiavnica are characterized by a situation in a violent terrain. From the side of the square St. Trinity are three- to four-storey, while the last floor serves as the ground floor in the back alley. The cellars are also typical to be dug into the rock subsoil, which in some cases passed to the galleries. Originally in the city was dominated by an unorganized building with narrow streets, which later formed a terraced building due to the expansion of houses.

In the Middle Ages were houses mostly wooden, brick were only isolated. Typology developed from tower houses that formed a defense system, through chamber and hall houses to houses with passages and houses with height. The height was reduced attic for storage of wet sensitive goods, which was shown on facades by a series of small windows with shutters or forged knocks. During the Baroque period, the nobility bought several plots and rebuilt them into city palaces with a landscaped front courtyard and representative staircases. In the 19th century, there were apartments with four-winged blocks and central courtyards, as well as houses of poverty and iron houses on the outskirts of the city near the walls.

Currently, the building is registered by the Slovak Monument Office under number ÚZPF 3368. The housing function was preserved in burgher houses, although there was a modernisation of the partners and a change in housing standards.

Welcome to Banska Stiavnica, a city that is a lively museum under the openair. Right now, you are facing one of the remarkable witnesses of local history, which is this burgher's house. When you look at it, you may be interested in its strategic position. Note that the building is not placed just by chance, but it stands like an end corner object on a small micro square. The surrounding area is characterised by a rough terrain, which is typical for Banská Štiavnica, and this house has naturally entered this difficult country. In front of you, then, there appears to be a building that represents the lives and ambitions of the locals from ancient times. Let's take a look at when and how this house originated. His history is long and layered, like the city itself. The first stones of this building were laid between 1400 and 1500. Thus, it arose at the time of the transition, when Gothic later met with the first streams of the early Renaissance period. At that time Banská Štiavnica was the center of wealth and power thanks to the mining of precious metals, and that is why houses were created, which were intended to give rise to the stability and status of their owners. In the following century, that is, over the years 1500 to 1600, the house went through another development. In this period it was built and completed already fully in Renaissance style. The Renaissance brought with it a new view of harmony and space, which reflected in how the house developed. If you now look at the overall appearance of the building, you will see the result of several centuries of changes. Although we do not know exactly who the architects who designed the project, their work survived the test of time. Pay attention to details and architecture. When you view the facade and the overall form of the house, see it as a solitaire Renaissance building. It is a typical representative of the townhouses of the late Renaissance, which bears in itself traces of later épos. If you look deeper into its history, you will find that in the 18th century, i.e. between the years 1700 and 1800, the object has undergone modifications in the spirit of the Baroque. The Baroque elements are very typical of burgher houses in the region and have given them some grandeur and dynamism. Note that although the house has undergone several renovations, it has preserved its original character. It is fascinating that the building has to this day preserved its overall distinctiveness and ground plan-space composition. This means that the basic idea of how the house should have worked and how its rooms were arranged remained preserved, although the surface details and some parts were modified over time. When we move to the 19th century, between 1800 and 1900, we find that the house also testified to modernization. At this time the urban development of the entire city changed and the way it lived in the city. Townhouses were adapted to new needs of comfort and hygiene, which left a mark on the building. Although the historical records do not feature specific names of known personalities closely connected to this house, the house itself is a story of thousands of nameless townspeople. Imagine the people who lived here five hundred years ago. Imagine merchants, craftsmen, or city officials who passed through this micronámestie, negating metal prices, and following the development of one of Europe's most important mining cities. This house was not just a dwelling, it was a symbol of success in a society where the rule was that the stronger the house, the more powerful the owner. One of the most interesting things about this building is its position. Imagine the challenge of building in such a violent terrain for centuries. The fact that the house stands as a corner object while closing the space of a small square gives it a unique dynamic. He is a corner guard who has been watching for almost half a thousand years everything that is happening in the streets of Banská Štiavnica. It is fascinating how architecture can respond to the terrain and create something that is functional and aesthetically pleasant. If we stopped at the mystery of this house, we might ask how many secrets hide its walls. Every layer of color, every stone in the foundation and every change in the ground plan speaks of a different épe. From the Gothic foundation to the Renaissance development and Baroque details, to the modernization of the 19th century. It's basically a vertical cut in the history of our architecture. Now that you have looked at this beautiful example of burgher architecture, we recommend you continue to explore the surroundings. Banská Štiavnica has many such hidden jewels, which are waiting to be discovered. Feel the atmosphere of these narrow streets and try to imagine how this city pulsed with life at the time of its greatest glory. Thank you for spending this brief moment with us in front of this historic house. We wish you a pleasant next walk in Banská Štiavnica and hope that this trip in the past inspired you to discover the beauty of our common cultural heritage. Goodbye at the next point of your journey.

Tips for visitors

We recommend a visit in spring and autumn months. In Banská Štiavnica there is pleasant weather and less tourists, which makes it easier to observe the architecture of the house.

The building is residential and only available from outside. We recommend comfortable shoes for walking on historic paved streets. The surrounding streets are suitable for photography; details of the facade are best captured early in the morning or before sundown.

Families with children can combine the visit with searching for historical details on the facades of houses. Nearby is the historical center of Banská Štiavnica, which is suitable for a short tour.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring Banská Štiavnica will wake up to new life and the townhouse will surround fresh greenery. The sun provides soft light during this period, which highlights the details of the facade and historical features of the exterior. It is recommended to visit the site in the morning. Due to the variable spring weather in the mountain area, it is advisable to wear layers and wear comfortable shoes for walks in the historical centre. Summer months bring strong lighting and rich colors that are suitable for photography architecture. In the main season there are the most visitors in the streets. The house is suitable to observe early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are lower and there is peace. Light, breathable clothing and sun protection are recommended. Autumn in Banskobystrický kraj rozświetí surrounding the house with gold and red tones of leaves. The light is lower in this period and creates long shadows that add depth to the construction. For walks are suitable warm sweaters and waterproof shoes, because autumn breeze and humidity in hilly terrain can be sensitive. Zimą is a city plunged into silence and a townhouse can be surrounded by snow. The atmosphere is calm, especially in advent times. When visiting it is necessary to wear the cloth into warm winter clothes and wear shoes with anti-slip sole, because the historical tiles can be slippery in frost.
