The Assumption Church of Our Lady in Banská Štiavnica is located on the Academic Street. This church was originally dedicated to St. Nicholas and built in the 1930s as a three-ship Romanesque basilica with a flat attic and a transverse boat. His square shrine was closed with a polygonal apsid, while the side boats had semicircular apsides. The bells were located above the sanctuary in the past, but they are now located in towers above the facade of the church.

Originally, this monument belonged to the dominant one before the Mongolian invasion. After the Asian attack, the monks returned to the city in 1275 and took over the church report that they held until 1536. As a result of the Reformation, the Dominican monastery fell apart and the church underwent several ownership changes. From 1575 to 1669 he was under the direction of the Gospels, later taken over by the Jesuits. In 1776 he became the main parish church and came into the hands of the secular clergy.

The church has undergone several reconstructions that have changed its appearance. By the end of the 15th century it was rebuilt in Gothic style. After the fire of 1679, caused by Tököly's troops, the roof burned and the loose bells broke the vault, causing the main altar to burn. The Jesuits repaired the church and later rebuilt it several times. In 1734 they demolished the southwest apsid and built a sacristy under which there was a crypt buried with prominent personalities. The fire in 1806 destroyed the church completely, when repaired it received today's classicistic times.

The interior of the church is mostly newer. The main altar with classicistic column architecture was built in 1811 and the picture of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was painted by Viennese painter Vincent Fisher. Baroque altars of St. Francis Xaverský and St. Ignác of Loyola are older, from the 1st half of the 18th century. The side altars of St. Joseph and St. John Nepomuk are from the first quarter of the 19th century. Among the oldest items are the Late Gothic Baptist and the three Baroque Confessors. The benches are from the beginning of the 19th century, and the stallum in the presbytery with the price of miners handed over to Saint Michael mining badges is remarkable.

Right next to the church, there was a Dominican monastery, from which today only a few parts of the walls and preserved Gothic lining were seen. The original monastery was built in the 13th century and after its destruction in 1442 it was restored and rebuilt in Gothic style. In 1669, the Jesuit monastery, which was established there, was operational until 1914. After the gymnasium moved, the old building began to disappear, and in 1933 it had to be demolished.

Behind the church there is a large building parish, which was originally a burgher house from the 16th century. For the purpose of the parish administration, this house was acquired and adapted in the 1980s. From this time comes the late baroque portal, and the parish is connected with the sacristy covered wooden corridor.

Today the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Banská Štiavnica is a protected monument with official number of the ÚZPF 2486. Its architecture and history are attractive to tourists and historians, making it an integral part of the cultural and spiritual life of Banská Štiavnica.

For children

Hello young adventurers! For about 804 years in Banská Štiavnica, a Dominican monastery has been built. The monks from the army of the Dominicans lived here, prayed and studied old books. The church on a small hill served as a temple with long pillars and high windows. The monks prayed, taught new scripts, and helped the inhabitants. The church was dedicated to Mr. Nicholas, which brought many stories about his goodness. The fire caused by Tököly's troops burned the church and wall by breaking the vault when the bells fell.
