Welcome to Bardejov. You are standing in front of a unique historical monument, which is the city walls, and you are now in a place where breathtaking history meets the atmosphere of the medieval city, registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you look around, you see a formidable fortification system that for centuries has protected the inhabitants from external danger. Look up, or look in front of you at the massive walls, which, by their massiveness, still give rise to respect and reminiscent of the turbulent times of past centuries. Let us move to the very origin and historical context of this magnificent defense system. Bardejov quickly developed and rich thanks to its convenient location on business trips, which naturally attracted not only buyers but also various enemies. Protecting the city was therefore an absolute priority. Although the exact chronology of the construction of individual parts is not recorded in detail and the names of concrete builders or architects remain in the shadow of history, the systematic construction of walls took place in several stages over the centuries to keep pace with the development of defence technology. The city needed a safe background for its development and therefore invested huge funds in the construction of stone walls, trenches and bastions, which formed a holistic and extremely advanced defense system for its time. Now pay attention to the architecture itself and the details you have right in front of you. Look at the structure of the masonry, the way the stones are joined together, and see the massive nature of the entire fortification. Castles copy the ground plan of the historical nucleus and create some sort of protective ring around the city. At close range, note the ingenuity with which the individual parts of the fortification were designed to provide the best possible protection for possible siege. Although we do not know the precise historical personalities associated with the design of these walls, their anonymous creators have done a masterpiece whose result we can admire to this day. Each piece of stone carries the story of thousands of hours of human labor, craft skills, and determination to protect its home. When you think about the deeper meaning of this place, you will realize that the city walls are not only silent witnesses of the past, but a vivid reminder of how the medieval and modern city worked. Although the key stories and particular names of knights or nobles associated with this particular part of the fortification have not been preserved in detailed chronicles, the greatest story is the very resistance Bardejov. The fortification survived wars, fires, changing historical eras, and changes in the way of fighting. When you stand before these walls, you become part of the long chain of generations that have passed before you. The capture associated with this place lies in the very vastness and preservation of the entire complex. Few towns in Slovakia boast such an integrated and well-preserved system of city fortification, which still defines the historical centre and gives it its unmistakable character. It is fascinating to think that the silence that reigns around the walls today was once interrupted by the bustle of guards, the streak of weapons, and the rush of marketers approaching the city gates. This silent monumentality is the greatest mystery and at the same time the magic of Bardejov - the walls are silent, but if you are sensitive enough, they will tell you the story of glory, the struggle for survival and the immense efforts of the ancestors. Finally, I would like to invite you to explore this magic city further. Take a walk along the entire perimeter of the walls, discover the corners, perceive the atmosphere of the ancient streets and let yourself be carried by genius loci, which Bardejov offers generously to every visitor. Thank you for listening to my interpretation today, I wish you a wonderful experience of discovering and seeing with other sights of this extraordinary city.
Tips for visitors
The city walls in Bardejov are recommended to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the light is softer and there are fewer tourists in the city. We recommend to the photographers to look for perspectives around the bastion, where in the golden hour stands out the texture of the stone and contrasts with the urban environment.
Since the object is viewed from the outside in public space, we recommend footwear with fixed soles suitable for moving on historical roads and pavements.
Families with children can turn the walk into a search for details and defensive elements, which helps younger visitors to understand the fortification function. We recommend to focus on exploring the walls and architecture of the historical centre.

Seasonal recommendations
In spring, the neighborhood of the city walls of Bardejov is awakening into a new life. Fresh greenery on lawns and flowering trees contrast with dark masonry. The sun's rays hit the stone bastions at a milder angle, which gives the paved streets and fortification elements lighting suitable for photos. Since it is a monument in public space, tourism is only starting after winter. During walks around the castle trench system you will meet a minimum of people. Explore the area in the morning. Put on solid walking shoes for moisture and wear a windshield.
During the summer, the medieval fortification in Bardejov plunges into sunshine, which highlights the massiveness and details of the bastions and gates. Nature around the revelry full colors and treetops provide shade during the hot afternoon. In the evening, the historical core is lit. Summer season attracts more visitors to the city. If you prefer to explore peacefully without crowds, go to the walls early in the morning. Light summer clothing, sunglasses, and sufficient supplies of drinking water will be sufficient for a walking tour of the entire territory.
Autumn brings an atmosphere to the Bardejov walls, underlined by the trees surrounding the fortification in yellow, orange and brown shades. The low sun creates long shadows in the evening and penetrates the fallen branches, creating a game of light and shadow on stone blocks. With the arrival of colder days, the space around the monument is emptied from tourists. For this season, prepare waterproof footwear and layered clothing, including a warm cap and a windproof jacket.
Winter surrounds the city walls of Bardejov with silence and often snow. Short winter days offer dim light and snow cover on bastions creates scenery for lovers of photography. Movement in public space requires caution, especially if the trails are frozen or covered with snow. Avoid evening hours when visibility is limited. A good time to inspect is noon when the air temperature rises. Winter clothing, footwear with slip soles and gloves are essential.
