City Hall in Bardejov is an architectural document of the penetration of Renaissance elements into Gothic construction, built in the middle of Radničné Square. This building is located in the village Bardejov, Prešov region.

The history of town hall construction begins in 1376, when King Louis I. He promoted Bardejov to a free royal city and granted him the right to elect a richer and city council. During the 15th century, the town council met in an official room located outside today's central square. The economic and social boom at the end of the 15th century brought about the need for more representative premises for council meetings, which led to the decision to build town halls in the middle of the market square.

Construction work started in 1505 under the leadership of master Alexander. During the following years, several building masters were replaced, including Alexius, John of Prešov and Theophilus Stanczel. Master John of Prešov finished the first floor and built shields with stone elements, while Theophilus Stanczel painted shields with coats of arms between 1510 and 1511 and in the council hall wall painting of the Last Court. Matej Grunwald solved painting exterior decoration and in 1556 he finished the roof over the arkier, which in 1641 decorated the coat of arms of the city and the country.

The town hall is a two-storey building standing block character with a longer side in the north-south direction. Significant elements include the Renaissance arcce on the eastern facade, shields with statues and crabs, and the figure of Roland symbolizing the guardian of urban privileges. On the southwest corner, two city measures from 1519 and 1620 decorated with coat of arms and dating were preserved.

The interior of the town hall is richly decorated with architectural elements, including portals, arches, intarsed doors and painted brands. The Town Hall with its original beamed cluster ceiling is the largest room serving city council meetings.

Since its inception, the Town Hall has been the representative seat of the City Council and the centre of public life. The ground floor fulfilled a commercial function, upstairs were rooms serving the needs of the city council and the municipal treasury. The influences of the Renaissance began to apply on the construction site, making the city hall of Bardejov the first secular building of this style in Slovakia.

In 1985 the town hall was included in the list of national cultural monuments of Slovakia and in 2000 together with other monuments of the historical core Bardejov was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today it serves as rooms of the Šariš Museum, where the history of the exhibition Bardejov - Free Royal Town is permanently located.

Visit to the town hall offers an overview of the historical and cultural heritage of Bardejov. It is an opportunity to see the architectural element that reflects the development of urban life and art in Slovakia. The town hall stands as a witness to the past and as an active space for understanding the historical events that shaped this place.

Welcome to the heart of the historic Bardejov. You stand at one of the most important points of this city, next to the building, which is not only an administrative center but, above all, a living witness of ancient times. In front of you, the town hall, a monumental building that dominates the city square and immediately attracts attention by its presence. When you look at it, you may be affected by its unusual strength and dignity. It's not just an ordinary house, it's an architectural document that tells a story about how the world changed in our lands more than half a century ago.

Let us go together to see what this building really represents. The town hall in Bardejov is not just a set of walls and roofs. It's fascinating proof of the connection of two great worlds. If you look at its overall structure, you can see the strength and vertical orientation left by Gothic. However, if you keep a closer eye on her face, you will find that new, more modern elements of the Renaissance began to slip into this older framework. This transition between styles is not random, it is a visual record of historical reversal, when medieval national tradition began to open up with a new, humanistic approach to architecture and life.

In order to understand how this unique whole came about, we need to go back to the past in our ideas, right into the early sixteenth century. In 1505 a major construction started to take place here, which was meant to change the face of the city forever. At that time Bardejov was a prosperous city, and the need to have a representative town hall was a clear signal of his power and stability. Construction was not just an ordinary process, it was a complex project that required the best experts of its time.

Note how important the role of individual masters was at the time. The whole process began under the leadership of Master Alexander, who laid the foundations of this important building. There was a great responsibility because the town hall was to be the heart of the city. Later, other capable builders who put their knowledge and art into the building joined the work. Among the names recorded in the history of this town hall are Alexius, John of Prešov, and Theophilus Stanczel. Each of them brought something different, which ultimately created this fascinating architectural composition.

Now pay attention to the most important menu associated with this building. Master John of Prešov had a crucial role, because he finished the first part of this monumental building. It is fascinating to think about how plans were being transmitted at the time, how the work of various masters was coordinated, and how one building was able to cope with what was then old and traditional, what was new and revolutionary. It is thanks to these men today that we can see the unique contrast between the Gothic foundation and the Renaissance breath.

Now that you're walking around town hall, just try to let yourself feel the atmosphere. Look at her facade and try to capture in the spirit the moment when the Renaissance elements began quietly, but relentlessly, into the Gothic structure. It is not that one era completely erases the other, but about their mutual dialogue. It's like in books where old chapters don't disappear, but they're written in new, modern words. This building is exactly the kind of story that has been constantly written since 1505.

You may be interested in one interesting thing that gives this place depth. This town hall is not just a memory of architecture, it is a symbol of continuity. Although the rulers changed, styles changed and the social composition changed, this building still stands there and reminds us that progress is not about the destruction of the old, but about his questioning. It is this adaptation capacity that we see in connection with Gothic and Renaissance that makes the Bardejov City Hall so special throughout the region.

I won't hold you in one place much longer now. Town Hall is just the beginning of your journey. I recommend you continue with your tour after the historical centre of the city, which is full of other hidden treasures and architectural details. See every street, every stone detail, every building, because each one is part of this great history. We wish you a pleasant continuation to discover the beauty of Bardejov. We say goodbye, but we believe that this experience will stay for longer than just a short while.
