The parish church of the basilical St.Egidius in Bardejov is located in the northern part of Radničné Square of the village Bardejov in Prešov region. It's a Gothic church with a rich history.
The origins of the temple date back to the 13th century when Cistercian monks from Koprzywnica, Poland, settled on this place and founded a monastery dedicated to St. Egidius. The royal deed of 1247 by which King Belo IV. confirmed the lands around Bardejov contains the first mention of the existence of a church in this area. In the second half of the 13th century, the cisterns left the site.
Early in the 14th century, German colonists settled on an abandoned area. King Charles Robert I of Anjou in 1320 confirmed the privileges of new settlers in paying taxes, indicating the existence of a parish priest on the spot. In 1420 - 1427 a tower of the temple was built and in 1427 it was mentioned as a three - boat basilica with simple arcades.
In 1448 the expansion and rebuilding of the temple under the direction of the local builder Nicholas began. In the years 1482 - 1486 there was another extension, in which three chapels were added: Virgin Mary, St. Elizabeth and St. Andrew. The tower in the southwest part was built by Franklin Stemasek from Anspachu, Bavaria, between 1486 and 1494.
In subsequent times, there were no major changes in construction. After fires, earthquakes, and bombardments, extensive repairs were needed. In 1878 began the regotization of architect Imrich Steindl and later Fridrich Schulek, which removed the Renaissance arrangements and replaced them with neo-Gothic elements.
In the 20th century, further interventions were carried out, including the exchange of pastography and roof repairs. In 1990 both temple bells broke - Urban and John. After a major repair of the temple from 1986 to 1999, new bells were placed in the tower.
Today the parish church of the basilical St. Egidius in Bardejov is open to visitors. Its three-ship basilical architecture and Gothic elements are part of its history.
