Divín, an older standard name of Divínsky Castle, is a Gothic castle and ruins in the village Divín on the boundary of the Krupinská Plain and Lučenská basin. This monument, built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, served to protect the road to the Central Slovakian mining area. Over the centuries, the Renaissance rebuilt it until its destruction by the imperial army in 1679.

The castle was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries on a non-high hill directly above the center of the village. Historical sources record several older names of the object, including Dyun from 1329, castrum Duyen from 1393 or later named castrum Dywyn from 1467 to 1469. The castle is likely to be built by members of the Lošonci family, who came from nearby Lučenec.

The area of the castle and its fortifications exhibit elements of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. According to records of the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic under number ÚZPF 431 consists of a complex of 18 separate objects. The castle core, which originated after 1241, includes a Gothic palace, a wall, two courtyards, a gate and a tower built in the 14th to 15th centuries. The subsequent Renaissance reconstruction in the second half of the 16th century and in the 17th century extended the complex to the front. This includes two economic buildings, a tank, two gates, and a ditched access area. The modern defense elements of this period include the north and northwest bastion, the east bastion, the cannon bastion, the gate of the fortification and the wall, some parts of the fortifications coming from the period after 1559 and the 17th century.

During its history, the castle has replaced several owners. After a failed plot against the king, in which members of the Lošonci family of Žigmund and Stephen participated, King Matthias Corvinus in 1469 gave the castle and the estate to Michal Orság. Soon the castle was owned by John Nádashdy Ongor, after whom he was violently seized by Zigmund Balash. In 1559 they built new forewalls, complemented by modern defence elements such as basthion and two corner bastions. However, these measures did not prevent the Turks from conquering the castle in 1575 after a long siege. The Ottoman armies occupied him until 1593, when the royal army and Baalint Balash conquered him back. The definitive end of the castle was caused by the heistic acts of his later owner Imrich Balash, for which he was conquered by imperial troops in 1679 and blown up.

Divín Castle is an accessible ruin directly above the village. The remains show construction development from Gothic beginnings to Renaissance fortifications.

Welcome to this magical place. Right now, you are standing in front of the Divin Castle, and through your earpieces you will be immersed in stories that bind to these ancient walls. When you look up, an impressive silhouette of the castle appears in front of your eyes, which rises on the unhigh hill right above the centre of the village. Feel this unique atmosphere, when the past meets the present and the old stones around you are slowly beginning to tell their own story. Try to stop for a moment, take a breath of air flowing through the centuries, and follow the footsteps of ancient times. Let's go back in time and see how this castle actually originated and why it's standing here. The Divín Castle was built on the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries on this hill directly above the center of the village. Its primary task in those turbulent times was to guard and protect the important road that led to the Central Slovakian mining area. Imagine the bustle that prevailed when merchants, guards, and messengers passed through. This strategic point was of immense importance for the whole area and the castle was defensive with great responsibility. Now pay attention to the architecture itself and the details you have right in front of you. Castle complex The divinus consists of eighteen separate objects. These objects carry unmistakable elements of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. When you look at the different parts of this extensive complex, note how different building styles are intertwined here, which testify to the development and rebuilding over the ages. Although it is a ruin, the massiveness and thought-out arrangement of eighteen separate objects gives the impression of the grandeur with which this fortification system was designed and built. There is also a series of moving events that shaped his fate. One of the most important and dramatic moments in the history of this monument was the year thousand five hundred seventy-five. This year the Divín castle was conquered after a long siege. Imagine the tension that then prevailed under these walls, the rush of weapons and the smoke of rolling from the surrounding slopes. This moment has changed the nature of the castle forever and has entered its rich chronicle. The fates of the people who lived here, fought and defended their homes, give each stone a deeper dimension. The capture or mystery of this place lies in its very nature and scope. The fact that the complex consists of 18 separate objects, each of which fulfilled its unique function, makes Divín Castle a fascinating building unit. Architectural connection of Gothic and Renaissance at such a strategic place resembles the art of the then builders, who were able to combine strict function of defense with then aesthetic feeling. At the end of our meeting today, I would like to thank you for taking the time to come here. The Divin Castle showed you a piece of its rich heritage and you became witnesses to his story. I invite you to further explore the surroundings and discover other secrets that this region offers. I wish you a wonderful experience and an early look.

Tips for visitors

The Divinsky Castle is worth to be issued in spring or autumn when fallen leaves reveal the architecture of the ruins and surrounding nature allows views. In summer, the surroundings of the castle hill are covered by green scenery, while early morning haze or sunset are used to photograph when light illuminates stone walls and the village of Divín.

On the castle hill leads a pedestrian route directly from the village of Divín, check the transport links in the current timetables. Since it is a ruin in the field, pack up solid shoes, a supply of drinking water, and, in warmer months, a head covering and insect repellent.

Pictures of the entire area can be made of opposite slopes, where the fortification in contrast with the landscape of Banská Bystrica region can be seen. When photographing details of architectural elements, the morning side light helps to create the depth of shadows on the masonry.

Visiting the site allows you to learn about medieval history. Due to the nature of the ruin, care should be taken to the safety of children and to move along the paved parts, while the stroller is appropriate to leave in the village.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings nature awakening and surrounding greenery surrounds the walls of Divín Castle, while meadows below the castle hill bloom with spring flowers. Variable sunlight creates conditions for photographing silhouette ruins. The terrain can be muddy and slippery after spring snow and rainfall, so solid and waterproof tourist shoes are recommended. The morning tends to be cool, so it suits layered clothing and windshield, while it is worth walking around noon. Summer will cover the castle mountain with leaves and vegetation, with noon rays falling on stone walls. The atmosphere is calm, although temperatures can reach high values. A light, breathable garment, a sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water are needed for the visit because there is no refreshment in the area. A good time to climb is early in the morning or late in the evening when the air is fresher and the setting sun illuminates the masonry. Autumn transforms the landscape in shades from yellow to brown and morning fog often covers the castle hill. The low sun during the day creates long shadows and light conditions to capture the structure of the masonry. During the autumn days, the weather changes rapidly, so warm, windproof clothing and cap or gloves are recommended. Time for the tour is the afternoon when the morning fog melts. Winter brings a view when the Divín castle covers a layer of snow and bare trees reveal views of the surroundings and the village below. The cold atmosphere accompanies old walls that contrast with snow cover. Winter, warm and waterproof footwear with non-slip soles are essential, as the road to the slope can be icy. The castle is worth picking around noon when visibility is the best and the air temperature reaches the daily maximum, as winter days are short.
