Castle Sitno Castle
The castle of Sitno is a medieval ruin from the second half of the 13th century on the eponymous mountain in Štiavnické vrchy in the village of Ilija. The monument is registered The monument office of the Slovak Republic under the number ÚZPF 1233 and consists of the remains of the fortified building, which served as a guard and refuge for the defensemen of the castle.
The top of Sitna was used for steep rock walls to defend in ancient times, from which comes the wall fortification. In the first half of the 13th century, an extensive castle was built in this place, where the most vulnerable part was built. In the 16th century, he was built by a barbarian to protect the entrance from artillery fire.
The architecture of the castle consisted of two parts. On the north side was probably a castle palace, which led to a staircase carved into a rock. The southern part was formed by the lower castle with the rest of the perimeter walls. The defensive elements included the neck trench on the west side and the water tank carved into the rocky subsoil at the barbacane. The walls of the barbacan were designed to reflect artillery missiles and it is assumed that the building was high and equipped with guns.
In 1548 the castle was besieged by the royal army to be taken away by the robbery knight Melichar Balass. During Turkish danger, the castle was managed by military captains, later acquired by Captain Ján Krusič. Since 1629 he was the property of the Koháry family. During the anti-habsburg uprisings in 1703 the castle was occupied by Kuruccan troops František Rákoczi II. After their departure in 1710 the castle was destroyed and became a source of building materials for the lookout for Sitna and the manor house in Saint Anton. After the Kohárys died out, the estate was taken over by the Coburgs.
At present, the castle is a ruin. Thanks to archaeological research and conservation, it is possible to identify the location of the barbacan, tanks and entrance to the castle. On site are located stones from the original portal and prehistoric jarnovy. Visitors can see the area of the fortification site, where in some places traces of extinct structures are visible.

Welcome to this unique place where history meets the majestic power of Slovak nature. You are now facing the ruins of Sitno Castle, which stands proudly above the landscape and reminds us of the times long past. When you look around, you will surely feel the strange atmosphere created by the steep rock walls and surrounding scenery of the Banská Bystrica region. The castle of Sitno is not just a ruin, it is a silent witness of history, who, thanks to its strategic position on top of the rock massif, was naturally destined for defence.
Let's go back in time and see how this castle actually originated. The castle of Sitno began to write its history in the second half of the 13th century. However, its foundations go much deeper into the past, because it was built on the site of an extensive prehistoric fort. In ancient times, people have understood that these steep rock walls offer perfect protection from enemies. This natural advantage was the key reason why this peak became a place where the medieval castle later grew. Although the exact names of architects or builders remain shrouded in mystery, their work has endured for centuries and still gives us insight into the way defence systems were built in the past.
Nyni, pay attention to the very structure that lies before you. Notice how the walls of the castle are naturally connected to the surrounding terrain. If you take a closer look at the remains of the fortification, you will see evidence of how the castle had to adapt to changing military technologies. In the sixteenth century, the castle underwent a major reconstruction, when the barbakán was added to it. This element was very modern and necessary at the time. Its massive walls were specially designed to reflect artillery missiles, which clearly shows that the castle had to face increasingly modern and destructive weapons. It is fascinating to imagine how defensemen once moved in those places, who, with all their strength, protected their territory from attacks.
Although particular historical personalities that would be inextricably connected with the castle remain in historical sources often in the background, the castle Sitno itself is connected with the rich tradition of our region. It is a place that bears the stories of the generations who lived here, worked and defended their homes. Every stone you see here could tell us his own story if he could just speak. It is this unknown history that gives the place a sense of mystery that makes us think about the lives of our ancestors.
The interesting thing that makes this place so special is its long continuum of settlement. From the prehistoric castle to the medieval fortress with a barbican, Sitno has always been a strategic point. It is believed that it was thanks to its inaccessibility and ingenious fortification system that Sitno was a very difficult place to conquer. This mystery, as it has been able to build such a robust construction in such difficult conditions, remains an inspiration for many historians and visitors today.
I hope you are interested in this short walk in the history of the castle of Sitno and that you will notice the smallest details left by our ancestors as you continue to explore the surroundings. The Castle of Sitno is a place where it is worth stopping, taking a breath of fresh air and for a moment to think about how the world was changing around us. Seasonal recommendations
Spring in Sitna brings awakening of nature in Štiavnica mountains. The morning fog in the valleys below the castle creates suitable conditions for photography. Solid waterproof footwear is recommended as the trails are soaked after melting snow. Due to the variable weather and lower temperatures at the top compared to the municipality of Ilija, it is appropriate to cover the clothing.
Summer in Sitna allows views of the surroundings. Forests provide shade during the exit, but the ruin itself is uncovered and exposed to direct sunlight. Early morning ascent, head cover, plenty of water and sunscreen are recommended.
Autumn transforms the surroundings of the castle into a colorful landscape. Soft light highlights details of stone masonry and wall remains. At the top, it becomes colder in this period, so a windstorm is needed. Due to the shrinking day, it is advisable to plan a return before dusk, as the orientation in forest terrain is more difficult.
Winter in Sitna is associated with low temperatures. Winter clothes, gloves and cap are essential when visiting. On icy terrain are necessary anti-slip boot swabs. Due to the short day, it is appropriate to set off early in the morning to ensure a return before the arrival of the evening frosts.
