Saint Elizabeth's Cathedral, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Elizabeth, is the largest church in Slovakia with an interior area of 1 200 m2 and a capacity of over 5 000 people. It is located in the middle of Main Street in Košice, village Košice-Staré Mesto, Košice region. This church is referred to as the easternmost gothic cathedral of French style in Europe and has a significant influence on building activity in surrounding towns such as Prešov, Bardejov, Sabinov, Rožňava and also in Poland and Sedmohradsko.
The Košice Gothic Cathedral began to be built at the end of the 14th century and the construction completion dates back to 1508. It is the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Košice and the parish church of the Parish of St. Elizabeth in Košice.
The predecessor of the Cathedral was the oldest church of Košice, which originated probably around the middle of the 11th century and was dedicated to Saint Michael. After the German guests settled in Košice in the 40s of the 13th century, when St. Elizabeth became patron saint of the city, the original patronage of the parish church changed and was dedicated to St. Elizabeth. This Romanesque-Gothic church burned down around 1380, but was modified and maintained in operation until the construction of the contemporary Dome.
The first stage of construction of the new church began after the fire of the old church of St. Elizabeth about 1380. During this period, which lasted until 1420, the church was built before the five-ship basilica. The construction was strongly supported by the Pope's curio, and between 1402 and 1420 a transverse ship began to be added, which changed the disposition into a three-ship cathedral.
The second stage of construction lasted from 1420 to 1440 and brought about major changes. The five-ship basilical disposition was transformed into a three-ship cathedral with added transverse ships, creating a unique central hall space. Statuary decoration of portals and other elements were inspired by Gothic works from Prague and Krakow.
The third stage of construction, which lasted from 1440 to 1462, involved the enchantment of the temple with an asterisk vault. This phase also includes the sanctuary and sacristy as the youngest part of the earth.
The fourth stage of construction, which lasted from 1462 to 1490, focused on the completion of the south tower and the completion of the tower. The year 1462 is the year of completion of the tower works.
Today, the St. Elisabeth Cathedral complex together with St. Michael's Chapel and Urban Tower is declared a national cultural monument in 1970. The area registers the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic under the number of ÚZPF 1117 and consists of 4 objects: Church (r.k.sv.Alžbety, Gothic), Memorial Table (Rákóczi František II.), Chapel (r.k.sv.Michala) and City Tower (St.Urban).
St. Elizabeth's Cathedral is an example of a top gothic with a Greek cross and a central space. Its architecture and creation are a demonstration of European art.
