Townhouse in Košice - Old Town

Košice-Old Town, as one of the oldest settlements in Slovakia, has a rich history and cultural heritage. The townhouse is an important monument to this site.

During the Middle Ages, houses were wooden, rarely with more solvent owners, brick. The types of houses were influenced by the material, the way of heating, the solvency of the owner and the way of defense.

The tower house was a block multi-storey building, situated on a plot with a high stone wall. The economic object was situated at the opposite end of the plot. Tower houses together formed an effective defense system.

The chamber house had a simple longitudinal floor plan. The facade was situated front room, the court-oriented chamber and between them in the middle part was located black kitchen.

The house with passage was functionally usable and for a very long period became the most frequent layout type of the city residential house.

In the 17th and especially in the 18th century there was an increased interest of nobility in the town, which was related to its functions in county administration. The nobles bought houses next to each other and rebuilt them into representative houses.

The population in cities was growing. Residential rental houses ensured a much higher population density.

Pavlačové houses were characterized by a closed layout of a four-winged block with a central courtyard. Houses of poverty, iron houses were on the outskirts of the city, often forming part of the walls.

The function of housing remained in originally residential burgher houses until today, only the requirements of the standard of housing changed.

Townhouse in Košice-Starom The city is an important part of the cultural heritage and is worth visiting.

The town houses began to be built in the 17th century, when the nobility bought houses and rebuilt them into representative residences. In the 18th century, urban population grew, increasing the density of settlements through residential rental houses.

Tower houses are multi-storey buildings with high stone walls that formed a defense system. Chamber houses have a simple longitudinal floor plan with black kitchen in the middle.

Look up at the details of sculptures and architecture. The house with passage was for a long time the most common layout type of the city residential building.

Watch the facade and imagine life in this house. Pay attention to the details that interest you. The monument makes it possible to imagine the life of the inhabitants in the past.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the burgher's house is late afternoon. At that time the sun falls at an angle that highlights the relief of the facade and details of window frames. Early hours are suitable for peaceful observation of architecture without crowds of tourists.

It is recommended to use the public garage approximately five minutes walk or stop of public transport. Car access directly to the building is not possible due to narrow street and restricted zones.

Take comfortable shoes and plenty of water for the tour. In interiors, if accessible, air conditioning is often lacking, so it is important to prepare for a higher temperature. If you are planning a longer stay in the area, it is recommended to take a light layer of clothing for possible cooling in the shade.

For photographers is the perfect shot from the opposite corner of the square. Here the total composition of the building along with the surrounding environment is captured. The best light occurs between 16 and 18 when the shadow surfaces are soft and the colors of the facade are full. Avoid the middle of the day when the sharp sun creates opaque contrasts.

In the radius of thirty minutes walk there is a city museum, where local history is exposed. There is also a cathedral with a rich interior and a nearby cafe with a traditional offer. For families with children is a walk around the nearby park, which offers space to move and relax. Children may notice historical elements of architecture that are explained on information boards.
