Franciscan monastery in Košice, located on Main Street in the village of Košice-Old Town, is a historical monument with deep roots in Franciscan tradition and architecture. This monastery has the longest church building in Slovakia. Originally, the church was built as a Gothic building in the 14th century and operated under the protection of the Perényi family after the fire in 1333. In 1405 it was completed, primarily dedicated to Saint Nicholas.

After the fire in 1556 the church burned down and Franciscans left Košice until 1600. Between 1597 and 1671 the temple served as the Bishop's Cathedral of the Diocese of Jager during the Turkish occupation of Jagra. After the Franciscans returned in 1651, the church became the heart of their activities, until 1668 it served as a weapons warehouse under the orders of Emperor Leopold I. The restoration of the temple began after the end of the state uprising in 1718.

The monastery architecture combines Gothic and Baroque style. In the 18th century, the original Gothic ship was reconstructed and barrified, adding new life to the temple. The main ship is decorated with paintings by the Viennese painter Wretlund, who illusively represent the architecture of the ceiling. The main Rococo altar from 1760 is one of the most important parts of the interior, decorated with an image from Michael Angel Unterberger and statues of saints.

The church has passed through many owners and administrators. Following the dissolution of beggar religious armies by Emperor Joseph II, the church was confiscated by Franciscan, but following the establishment of the Košice bishopric in 1804 a priest's seminary was set up next to him and the church became a seminary. During the period of Napoleonic wars, he served as a food store.

The monastery contains tombstones, including the buried Jager Bishop Benedict Kisdy in the crypt under the sanctuary. In the church there are also crypts of General J. G. Sterdhal and other historical figures.

Today the Franciscan monastery is the heart of religious and cultural activity in Košice. His architecture, rich equipment and history attracted many visitors. This monument is worth visiting for its long historical journey and development of Franciscan tradition in the region. Visiting this monastery means plunging into a rich heritage that is still alive and active today.

Welcome to the heart of the historical basket. You are facing one of the most important spiritual and architectural points of this city - the Franciscan monastery. Before we get to a deeper knowledge of his history, just stop for a moment and see the atmosphere of the place you are in. We're in the old town, in a space where every tile and every stone block seems to be intertwined with centuries of history. See the monumentality that this building raises before you. There is something noble and humble in it, which is typical of spiritual places that have experienced so many changes.

When you look at this Gothic construction, see its overall composition and the power it exerts on the surroundings. Although time is fast, this monastery stands as a solid anchor for the past. This Gothic architecture you see in front of you is not just about shapes and lines, but about direct connection with the time when Košice was formed as a major Central European centre. Now, when you look at the facade and the overall structure of the building, try to imagine how this space worked several centuries ago. Feel the depth and stability this Gothic style brings.

If we move deeper into history now, we must return to the 14th century. It was during this period that this Gothic building began to take shape. It is fascinating to think about the technical skills and strong faith that people had to have at the time in order to bring such a structure to a height and create something so enduring. The history of this place is inextricably linked to the powerful generations, which at that time shaped the fates of the entire region. After a major fire in 1333 that struck the city, the temple became protected by a prominent family of Perényi. It was this protection that allowed the monastery and its buildings to thrive and remain a firm part of the city even in difficult times.

But feel that history is not only a story of success and building, but also a story of tragedy and restoration. Now that we remember the times that have passed, we need to look at 1556. At that time the city of Košice hit a great fire that had a devastating impact on this holy temple. This event was extremely difficult for the Franciscans. The fire was so intense that the church burned down and the brothers had to leave the monastery. Imagine the emptiness and silence that prevailed in this place. For many years, until 1600, the Franciscans did not work here. It was a time of waiting, a time of uncertainty, and a time when this building faced uncertain fate. But this very ability to survive, that resilience, is what makes this place so special. When the Franciscans returned in 1600, they brought with them new energy and continued their mission, making the monastery the living heart of that part of the city again.

Now I would like to call on you to pay attention to one of the greatest architectonic uniques that is right before your eyes. It may not be so obvious at first glance, but if you imagine the overall extent of this structure, you will understand its true size. This Franciscan monastery contains the longest church building in Slovakia. It is something that carries an immense sense of infinite infinity. When you move around or looking at the entire length of this building, see the perspective. This length is not just a number in the textbooks of history, it is proof of ambition, of the ability to build something that goes beyond normal human measurement. It is a monument that dominates its environment and deserves your full respect.

Now, when you look at the details that you can capture, try in the spirit to link this length to the historical context. Each metre of this building bears a imprint of centuries, from the Gothic period to the period of fires to the modern era. It is like a living book where every chapter is written with a stone and each side is marked by the fate of the city of Košice.

Although history has not told us the names of all individuals who participated in the construction or rescue of this monastery under the guerrilla, you see their presence in every detail of this architecture. Feel the invisible presence of people who walked here centuries ago, who prayed here and who sought refuge here in times of uncertainty.

I would like to conclude by saying that this Franciscan monastery is not just a static monument. It is lively direct proof that even after the greatest disasters, after the fire and after the departure, things can come back to life. It is a symbol of resilience and continuity.

I won't keep you any longer. I invite you to continue your discovery. Try to walk slowly around the building, perceive its shadow, perceive the texture of its walls and let yourself feel the atmosphere of this historic place. Perhaps at the next look at this longest church building in Slovakia you will see something new, something you missed before. I wish you a pleasant and inspiring rest of your visit to the historical centre of Košice. We'll say goodbye, but history is still waiting for you.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the Franciscan monastery is morning hours or late afternoon, when the city's most peaceful atmosphere is in the city centre and the light falls on the building most pleasant.

For children

In 1405 a Franciscan monastery was established in the heart of Košice. This Gothic complex was built at a time when the site developed without modern technologies and infrastructure. The monastery was protected by the genus Perényi during the plague epidemic in 1333 when many parts of the city were destroyed by fire.

After the great fire that destroyed the church, the Franciscans had to leave Košice and spent about a hundred years in the place. After returning, they returned to a monastery that was their home for a long time.
