The Archbishop's Palace in Košice, located on Main Street 28 in the Old Town area, is a monument with a rich history and architectural significance. This rococo-classicist palace was built in the early 19th century and served as a bishop's residence, which later turned into Archbishop's.

The palace was founded after the creation of a new Košice diocese in 1804. The first bishop of the new diocese was Andrei Szabó, and the palace served as his residence. In 1809 the building was built on the site of four houses purchased on Main Street. This project focused on centralizing the bishop's office near the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth and the parish.

The building of the palace has undergone several dramatic events. In 1841 he was caught by flames from the house of Vitez, resulting in his complete burning. Bishop Anton Ocskay gave the palace reconstruction. After reconstruction, the Austrian-Hungarian Emperor František Jozef I, who stopped here in 1851 and 1857, lived here.

In the palace there was a bishop's library and a rare gallery of diocese bishops, which Joseph Čársky raised. After his death in 1962, the Košice Bishop's Office remained unoccupied until the end of socialism. Later there is a church court, chaplains and religious sisters.

In 1995 Pope John Paul II visited Košice, where he promoted the Bishop Alojz Tkáč to Archbishop and divided Slovakia from one archbishophood into two: Bratislava-Trnava and Košice. This act turned the bishop's palace into Archbishop's.

Architecturally, the building is characterized by a rococo-classicist façade, which is broken by pilasters and roof ledges. The portal is decorated with a balcony with a heated railing and raised shield. The representative rooms have a rich stucco vault with rococo ornaments.

There is a memorial plaque on the palace that marks the meeting of Louis Štúr and Jonah Záborský in 1849. This monument was unveiled in 1972 by academic sculptor Juraj Bartusz. In 1996 a second memorial tablet of white marble was revealed to the Roman Catholic bishop Jozef Čársky, created by Arpad Račko.

Today, the Archbishop's Palace is part of a memorial area registered under the number ÚZPF 1066. The area also includes a plaque memorial and a burgher's house, which together form the historical complex in Košice.

Archbishop's Palace is an important part of the cultural heritage of Košice. Its architectural beauty and rich history testify to the history of the city, which has constantly evolved. For the visitor it is a place full of awareness of historical events and personalities that formed Košice as an important center in Slovakia. Visiting the palace offers an opportunity to know more about Košice's history and its impact on the wider region.

This historically interesting object is worth visiting.

Welcome to the heart of historical baskets. You are standing in front of one of the most important settlements of this city, in front of the Bishop's residence, which bears traces of extremely dramatic development, from the emergence of a new church administration to tragic fires and imperial glory. Before we go into the details, let's just try to stand up and see the atmosphere of this place for a while. Look at the building in front of you. See her presence in this part of the old town as she fits into the overall image of Košice architecture and acts as a silent witness to all the events that have taken place here over the centuries. Perhaps you feel the noble weight of history that radiates from her facade, even though we are here for a short moment as visitors.

To understand why this palace is so important, we must return to the early 19th century. The whole story of this residence is closely linked to the new era for the Kosice Church World. In 1804 a fundamental step was taken - a new Košice diocese was created. This moment was crucial for the city because Košice became an important spiritual and administrative center. With this new status, however, came the need to have a dignified seat for bishops, a place that would reflect the importance of this new diocese. So at this very time, after 1804, the building of the Bishop's Palace began to form as a symbol of authority and stability in the region.

Now, when you look at the building, try to observe its overall line and how it operates in space. Although time is constantly changing, the palace has preserved its characteristic presence. Look at his facade and try to find details in it that speak of his prestigious purpose. See how the building communicates with the surrounding streets and how its architecture reflects the effort to create a representative area. Although the palace today appears to be a solid and motionless part of the city, its history was once very unstable and full of unexpected twists.

The greatest test this palace faced came in 1841. Imagine the tragic situation when smoke and fear spread over the city. The fire that began to spread from the house of Vitez did not stop, and with inexorable force, he also lodged himself with this bishop's palace. It was not a minor damage; the flames were so devastating that they led to a complete burning of the building. At that time, it must have been an extremely painful vision for the city - such an important symbol of power and spiritual life, thus destroyed by fire. The palace basically turned into ashes and debris, which could have seemed to end a certain era.

However, history is not only about falling, but also about the ability to recover. And this is where one of the key characters entered the story. After this disaster, the palace had to come together again, rebuild and regain its face. The reconstruction, which gave the building its present appearance and allowed it to serve its purpose again, was controlled by Bishop Anton Ocskay. His decision and efforts to restore residence were crucial to the fact that we can stand and admire this object today. Thanks to his intervention, a new, stronger and more representative palace, which was able to survive the next centuries, was manned from the ashes.

This process of reconstruction brought so much respect to the palace that after reconstruction, the most important people of the then world hosted them. One of the greatest evidence of the prestige of this place is the fact that the Austrian-Hungarian Emperor František Joseph I lived in its walls. Imagine the atmosphere as the imperial court approached Košice and this palace became the place where church power met with the highest political power of the Empire. This visit only underlined that Košice and their bishop's residence were perceived as important nodes within the whole monarchic whole.

Now that you're looking at the palace, you may be interested in the hidden power that lies in it. It's more than bricks and mortar. It's a story of resilience. Every corner of this building, every line you see now, is the result of the resurrection effort after total destruction. It is fascinating how the tragedy of 1841 became an opportunity to create something even more lasting. This ability to endure and raise again is exactly what makes the bishop residence such an exceptional object.

Stop for a moment and see this contrast - between the destructive fire that once changed everything and the present peace you see. The palace stands here, firm and majestic, reminding us that even the hardest periods can turn into a new, famous chapter.

Now that you have come to know the basic twists in the history of this place, we invite you to continue your tour. Košice still has many secrets waiting to be discovered. Keep walking down the city streets, sense their atmosphere, and keep asking what these old walls would like to tell us if we could hear them. Thank you for spending this time with us at the bishop residence. We wish you a beautiful and inspiring journey through the city. Goodbye.
