Evangelical church in Dobšiná in Košice region is a late-gothic building from the end of the 15th century, declared a national cultural monument. The church is located in the centre of the village on Zimna Street. It has a plan of the Greek cross and medieval frescoes.

The first mention of the church comes from 1480. This place was in the first half of the 14th century the chapel of St. Valentine's Day. In 1480 a late-gothic one-ship church was built next to it. The paintings in the presbytery testify to the economic prosperity of the city in the second half of the 15th century. Since the Reformation, the object has been in the hands of the Gospels.

The building has undergone several changes. In 1641 the chapel and church were joined into one whole. In 1727 due to the increase in population, the church was extended by a transverse boat and connected with a detached tower. The fundamental reconstruction took place in 1891 when the building acquired its current neo-Gothic form. After 1989, the monument was restored.

In 2002, original Gothic frescoes were discovered in the interior. On the left side of the winning arch is depicted the German saint Hildegard of Bingen, brought here by German colonists; it is the only display in Slovakia. On the right side is depicted St. Jerome in a cardinal hat that, according to legend, pulls a thorn out of a wounded lion's paw.

In the sacristy there is a memorial tablet in Latin and old German, which resembles the invasion of Turks into Dobšiná. The interior is complemented by Baroque paintings of four evangelizers, stone baptismal, wooden pulpit and Protestant empora. The church has a two-manual organ from 1876 from the Vienna company Karl Hesse. On the tower are placed tower clock and three bells made after World War I.

Welcome to Dobšina. You are standing in front of a building that carries in st Jahrhunderty history and silence of the ancients' prayers. The walls of the Evangelical church, a building that is a silent witness to the changes that have passed through this place and the entire region of Košice, will naturally be carried before you. Now that you're looking at it, you may only perceive the peaceful atmosphere of this village, but behind those walls lies a story that will bring us back deep into the Middle Ages.

Although the exact names of architects and concrete construction dates remained forgotten in time, historical springs lead us to a period of late gothic. This building comes from the end of the 15th century, which makes it one of the important monuments in this area. Imagine how the church dominated the country and served as a spiritual center for the locals at the time of its creation. At that time, architecture was an expression of faith and an attempt to reach heaven, which was reflected in the very construction of this building.

If you now moved your view of the overall layout of the building, you would find something very interesting. This church is not built in the usual linear form known from many rural churches. Its ground plan has the shape of a Greek cross. This architectural detail is not only aesthetic, but it carries deep symbolism in itself and is not quite common at this time in our ends. Watch carefully how the shoulders of this cross spread out, creating a harmonious and balanced space. It is a detail that testifies to the careful planned construction and to the influences that came to Dobšiná at the time.

Let's go now with the thoughts of moving inside where the most precious is located. If you enter the interior, you see not only the cold of old walls, but also the presence of medieval frescoes. These paintings are a direct link to the people who lived here five hundred years ago. At that time, frescoes were not merely an ornament but were preached to illiterate populations in images that explained the holy scriptures and Christian virtues.

In the interior you will encounter one of the most precious sights you can find in Slovakia. A notorious visitor will note the depiction of the German saint Hildegard of Bingen. It is the only known picture of this fascinating personality in the whole territory of Slovakia. In the Middle Ages, Hildegard was a respected mystic, storekeeper, doctor, and philosopher, whose influence reached far beyond its monasteries. The presence of its form in Dobšiná indicates a strong connection of this region with the European cultural and intellectual flows of the time. It is a fascinating detail that makes this church a place unique not only within the region but on a national scale.

But hey, let us change our spiritual consideration for historical drama. I'll invite you to see the space of sacristy. That's where the subject is, which will take us to the time of uncertainty and fear. It is a memorable tablet drawn up in Latin and old German. This tablet is not just a decorative element but a testimony to tragic events. It reminds us of the invasion of the Turks, which at one time threatened the stability of the entire kingdom and brought to these valleys dissipation. When you look at these old letters, realize that this church was not just a place of prayer but also a place of refuge and a place where the most difficult moments of the community were recorded.

It's fascinating how one building can combine such opposing polarities. On the one hand, we have the softness of medieval frescoes and the intellectual depth of Hildegarda from Bingen, and on the other hand, the harsh reality of war and invasions, whose memory is preserved by a sign in sacristy. This contrast creates an atmosphere of mystery and respect that you feel today when you stand outside the building.

Set a moment over how many generations of people have passed through this door. How many secrets have remained in these walls and how many stories have been shed. Although we do not know exactly who designed the church or who built it, the result of their work survived centuries and today allows us to touch the past.

Dear visitor, you are faced with a diet of history that invites you to quiet reflection. I recommend you now in peace explore the surroundings of the building, perceive its proportions and, if you have the opportunity, take up with the details in the interior that we remember. Let yourself be led by a sense of amazement that such a gem of late gothic has been preserved until today in the heart of Dobšiná.

Thank you for your attention and for devoting time to this historical monument. We wish you a pleasant next stay in Dobšiná and hope that this short trip to the past will enrich you. Let this beautiful region thrive on your next journey and let the step lead you to new discoveries. Goodbye.

Thematic route

As there are no other sites in the area of the area, I propose a thematic route in the area of the main objective:

1. Evangelic church - tour of architecture and interior equipment of the church in the village Dobšiná. 2. Church area - walk around the building. 3. Inside the temple and exposition - a tour of the interior with information on the history and traditions of the local evangelical community.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surroundings of the Evangelical Church in Dobšina will awaken into life and nature will bloom in bright green tones. The sun during this period provides a pleasant light suitable for photography architecture. It is recommended that shoes with firm soles for wet soil and visit in the morning.

Summer months bring to Košice region intense heat and contrast between the blue sky and the facade of the church. The surrounding trees provide shade. In the main summer season it is advisable to choose the early morning time to avoid high temperatures and dress light, breathable clothes.

Autumn in Dobšina is characterized by golden and red shades of leaves that form the background for this sacral structure. Lighting is lower in this period and creates long shadows. It is practical to take layered clothing and windbreakers because the weather in the mountain area is unstable.

Winter transforms the surroundings of the Evangelical Church into a snowy region. The white color of snow highlights the contours of the building, especially in Advent time. Due to low temperatures and possible ice, footwear with anti-slip soles and warm winter clothing, including a hat and gloves, are essential.
