Castle Braničev Castle
The castle Braničev, also known as the Braničev Castle or the castle Parusťany, is an extinct guard castle in the cadastral area of Bačkov in the Trebišov district in the Košice region in Slovakia. Its remains are hidden under dense forest vegetation northwest of the village. This castle was probably built in the first half of the 13th century, perhaps in response to the Tatar invasion of Hungary between 1241 and 1242.
Braničevský castle was a royal castle managed by so-called bordermen - spiculatores, subject directly to the ruler. Its importance increased after the Arpadas died out in 1301 and was an important factor in the choice of Charles Robert as king of Hungary. In 1312 the Zemplín Oligarchs sided with Karol Robert in the fight against the Omodejovs and Matthew Čák, but after the unspoken promises of the ruler they rebelled in 1317. This resistance led Peter Pečené from Humenné and acted under Bačkov Castle. After the rebellion was suppressed, Charles Robert dug up the assets of the participants and distributed them to his faithful ones. Probably after this fight, Braničev Castle was destroyed.
After its destruction, it was mentioned as the property of the Széchy family in 1355 but later its remains were covered with thick forest vegetation. New owners transferred their seat to the new Bačkov castle, which was built directly in the village at the beginning of the 14th century.
Today, the ruins of Braničev Castle are underground and it is impossible to see its architectural elements or materials by which it was exposed. The landmark office of the Slovak Republic registers this object under number ÚZPF 5.

Seasonal recommendations
Spring - In the spring months, the surrounding landscape around the castle is revived by the appearance of new leaves and flowering meadow flowers. Weak but already quite bright sunlight highlights stone walls and reveals their texture, while the shadow corners remain mysterious. We recommend to dress in layers - light wind jacket, comfortable shoes with a good grip and cap against variable wind, which often surprises at this height. The best time for a walk is early in the morning when the light is soft and the hiking trails are not yet filled.
Summer - In summer, the surroundings of the castle turn into a green oasis, where a dense forest extends and the smell of pine trees appears on the hill. The intense sun casts long shadows on stone ruins, creating a dramatic atmosphere, especially at sunset. It is practically necessary to wear light, breathable clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen, as the reflection of sunlight from the stone surfaces can be strong. The ideal time is the afternoon hour, when light is the warmest and nature is the liveliest, while the evening cooler conditions allow for comfortable browsing.
Autumn - In autumn the surrounding forest changes in the kaleidoscope shades of red, orange and yellow, while falling leaves complement the historical scenery of the castle Braničev. Low sun angles bring golden lighting, which highlights the texture of old stone blocks and creates nostalgic atmosphere. It is recommended to dress up in warmer layers - sweater, jacket and tight shoes, as under feet can be wet and slippery. The best time is a late afternoon when the sun is still shining and the temperature is pleasant, but it is no longer as hot as in summer.
Winter - In winter, the castle is surrounded by a white mantle of snow that dampens sounds and adds quiet, mystical mood to the place. Low sunlight and long shadows create dramatic contrasts on stone walls, revealing details that remain hidden in other seasons. Practical advice includes warm clothing - winter jacket, cap, scarf and gloves, and footwear with anti-slip soles to prevent slipping on frozen stone surfaces. The best time is morning when the sun still provides enough light and temperatures are highest during the day.
