franciscan monastery Franciscan monastery
The Franciscan monastery in Bratislava's Old Town is one of the oldest sacral monuments of the capital. This church with an area located in the village of Bratislava-Old Town was originally a Gothic building, which was later modified in various building styles. His historical development and architectural changes are interesting for the tourist and historian.
The church and monastery dates back to the early 13th century. The first building was a Franciscan place, founded after the approval of the new church order in 1209. The Franciscans quickly expanded their scope in Hungary and began building a monastery on the northern edge of the city in about 1220. In the second half of the 13th century, the church was built, built in memory of victory over the Czech King Premysl Otakar II. in 1278. Hungarian King Ladislav IV. Cumánsky was considered the founder of the church sanctified on March 24, 1297.
The architecture has undergone several modifications over the centuries. Originally Gothic church was also adapted to Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist style. In 1580 and 1586 the city was hit by earthquakes that damaged the Franciscan monastery and the church. It took over thirty years before the church was covered with a new Renaissance vault, which was later replaced by Baroque. Today, only the presbytery and part of the outer walls of the main ship remained from the original Gothic church.
The church is a three-ship building with a polygonal presbytery and built-in polygonal tower. Its facade, arranged in Baroque style in the years 1745-1746, is famous for its artistic origin and strict symmetry. In front of the facade stands a forged iron cross without a corpus, richly ornamentally decorated, and stone sculpture by Jozef Sartory.
The two-storey building of the monastery in the contemporary classical style is the result of the rebuilding of 1860. The monastery was gradually expanded by additions, including a new Gothic monastery with a cross corridor and a hospital. The monastery garden was enriched by a fountain in 1708.
The interior of the church is rich in Baroque elements, especially the main altar from the years 1720-1730. The church tower, built to the south side of the ship between 1410 and 1420, was replaced by a neo-Gothic copy after static disturbance in 1897.
Today, the Franciscan monastery is part of the monument area under the number of the ÚZPF 24, which includes the church and monastery. This historical complex is worth visiting for its architectural value and rich history. The visit offers the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Middle Ages and to understand the historical development of the capital of Slovakia.

Welcome to the heart of Bratislava-Old Town, where you came to before one of the most important historical monuments of our heritage - the Franciscan monastery. You're just standing in front of this formidable church with an area that carries currents of history and deep historical wonders. The beginning of this sacral is dating back to the early 13th century. In 1220 the Franciscans began building a monastery on the northern edge of Bratislava, during a period of full change and spread of new ideas. This time was the decisive moment for Hungary, when after victory over Přemysel Otakar II. in 1278 changes began to appear in the territory of Slovakia today. In 1297 the Franciscan church was almost finished and sanctified by King Ladislav IV of Hungary. Cumány, which symbolized not only religious but also political confirmation of new forces in the region. Now, if you look at the church, you'll see his facade, which is the first proof of long-term architecture. Although the exact details of the original design and architect are unknown, we can note its elegant shape and traditional features that reflect Franciscan philosophy by means of simplicity and emphasis on sacral role. After the earthquake in 1580 it was necessary to repair the damaged parts, but the church maintained its original essence. In 1745 and 1860 the church went through further transformations. In 1745 the facade was adjusted in Baroque style, which added a European prestigious character to the church. Later, in 1860, the monastery was transferred to the contemporary classicistic style, making it a visual symbol of the connection between history and modernity. Despite the fact that specific history or personalities connected directly to the building are not exactly known, the Franciscan monastery in Bratislava itself is the seat of many secrets and stories. Instead, this was the cattle for many generations who prayed, taught, and lived under the patronage of the Franciscans. Interestingly, the formation of the church and monastery was possible just after the approval of the new church order in 1209. This step opened the door for the Franciscans to be established on the territory of Hungary and thus contribute to the development of the religious and cultural vibrancy of Bratislava. Now that you've noticed some basic details, I'll invite you to dig deeper into the atmosphere of this place. Go around the church, search his facade and realize how every stone block has its story depth. Let yourself be inspired by the quiet beauty and history spoken here. Thank you for your interest in this Franciscan monastery. If you have any further questions or want to learn more, do not hesitate to contact the current administrator.
