Capuchin monastery in Bratislava, also known as the church of St. Stephen the King, is located on the County Square in the Old Town.

Capuchins settled in Bratislava in 1676 during pestilences. The first impression was the chapel on Michalská Street today. In 1698 they bought land from Baroness Ghillányi and in the following year they obtained the gift of neighboring land from Countess Czobor. The building of the new church and monastery was supported by benefactor Eleonor Theresa, Countess de Strattmann and Payerbach. The foundation stone of the monastery was laid on 17 December 1708. At the end of September the following year was finished choir with a small tower, sacristy and adjacent oratorium.

Construction of the church started in 1711 and finished in 1717. In 1727 the monastery was extended to Kozia Street with new buildings, a library and a lazaret. In 1735 - 1737 the church was restored by the military engineer Felice Alliatto and the Capuchin religious brother Berthold Ziegerhoffer due to the threat of collapse. The monastery was completed in 1737 under the supervision of Francis Portenhauser.

In the years 1860 - 1861 they adjusted the front facade of the church in a neosloho style. In 1892 they placed reliefs from M. Gaigo in the interior and in 1895 - 1913 there were other restaurants. After the fire in 1913 the interior was modified and supplemented by a historic mobilizer.

The church architecture is simple. The single facade without vertical division is finished with a steep shield. The portal consists of a hallway with a rosette window and a niche with a statue of a patron. The interior is single-boated, encircled by a rolling arch with lunettes and separated from the presbytery by a winning arc. The old architecture separates the presbytery from the oratorium of the brothers.

The Capuchin monastery was managed by Archbishop Imrich Eszterházy and Primate Imrich Esterházy. In the 19th century, a study of theology began in the monastery.

Today, the Capuchin Monastery is part of the landmark area of OZPF 169 and is open to the public.

Hello and welcome to one of the most important monuments of the Old Town of Bratislava - the Capuchin monastery, where the historical tapes of time intersect with architectural styles and heritage. You are standing in front of a formidable building, its covering the pristine gray stones of the facade, which eagerly tells you its long history. Capuchins settled in Bratislava in 1676, which was a crucial moment due to pestilences. Their mission was to provide spiritual and physical support to the city's inhabitants. In 1708 the foundation stone of the Capuchin monastery was laid, which undermines the beginning of its construction. After several years of hard work, in 1717 the church of St. Stephen the King was completed, which became one of the most prominent parts of the entire complex. Between 1735 and 1737, the church was restored as a result of the threat of its collapse, the work was done by military engineer Felice Alliatto along with brother Bertholdem Ziegerhoffer. This section of history points to the constant mayor of Capuchins for his place of prayer and protection. From the first perspective, you may find unique styles that have been involved in the building. First of all, take a look at the front facade of the church, which in 1860 to 1861 was adapted in a neosloho style. This architectural approach brought new forms and fine details to the building, which give its fascinating visual effect. Inside you can whisk through the interior modifications and additions made after the fire in 1913. Capuchin monastery was not only a place of prayer, but also a center of education and health care. In 1727 it was extended to new buildings, including the library and lazaret, showing their wider role in the community. One of the attractions is the fact that Capuchins settled during the plague epidemics. Their presence was important not only for the mental but also for the physical well-being of the inhabitants of Bratislava. This aspect of their history is now an important part of the heritage presented by the Capuchin monastery. I asked you to take a closer look at this historical complex. Let's move along its paths and find the smaller details that each step tells about the rich last Bratislava. Take time to commit to this story that is still alive in the heart of the Old Town. For children

Close your eyes and imagine shooting down a time machine. Cricket, lightning and boom! We drove exactly 318 years back. We are in Bratislava, but not the one you know from your phone or from trips. The streets are narrow, the air smells smoke, and people come around you in weird hats and long coats. This is where, in the heart of the city, the Capuchin Monastery was formed.
