Keglevichov palác City palace
Keglevich Palace is a baroque city palace in Bratislava on Panská Street 27. The building from the first half of the 18th century is located in the state urban conservation area and is included in the list of immovable cultural monuments.
The palace was built on two medieval plots. During its construction was used masonry from previous late-gothic or early-renaissance buildings. At the time of its creation, it had a four-winged disposition, extending to the walls of medieval city fortification.
The two-storey palace has a ground plan in the shape of the letter U, as in the third term of the 19th century part of the building was separated from Hviezdoslav Square. On the ground floor, the original late-Gothic ridge preserved the starry vault from the beginning of the 16th century. The representative staircase leads to the first floor and the court wings are joined by the spiders. The facade of buildings divides herma pilasters with stylized warheads. The east side contains a rizalit, which originally belonged to another building. The portal with pilasters and segment ledge decorate the sculptures of sitting lions. Erb of the builder, Count Jozef Keglevič, decorates the portal; the coat of arms has two silver stripes on the red heel of the shield, and in the upper blue field there are two golden lions holding a sword with a golden handle and a crown with nine beads. The nine-pearl worthy crown is repeated above the shield decorated with green branches.
Before the construction of the palace on this place stood the burgher house. From 1601 to 1608 he was the owner of S. Alter, in 1634 Tomáš Baranay and between 1646 and 1656 H. Ch. Pärtinger. In the early 18th century, the house was owned by Ladislav Petray and Žofia Ilaas, who sold it to Gabriel Skaricz and Anne Žofia for 50 gold. In 1730 the widow sold the property to Rozália Amadé Simonitsová after Gabriel Skaricz for 400 gold, who sold it to counselor Jozef Duchoň in 1743 for 7,000 gold. That palace was sold to Countess Theresa Keglevičova on February 15, 1745 for the same amount.
Since 1750 was the owner of her son, Count Joseph I. Keglevich, who accommodated the participants in the palace. Jozef I. Keglevich acted as governor of the council, counselor of the inner secret council, guardian of the royal crown and najupan Turnian County. It is believed that he owned the palace until his death in 1813 when he passed to the hands of his heirs, the widow and Charles Keglevič. The Keglevič family, coming from Croatia, owned the palace until 1850. Then he moved into the hand of the Palfi family. In 1850 it belonged to Mary Pálfi and between 1880 and 1911 to Count Stephen Pálfi.
At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, Anna Lujza Barbora Keglevičová, known as Babetta, daughter of Karol Keglevič and Catherine Zici, lived in the palace. She was a private student of Ludwig van Beethoven. The componist visited Bratislava between 17th and 23rd November 1796, when he performed and dedicated several compositions to his host, namely Sonata for Piano No. 4 in Es Major, Opus 7 and Piano Concert No. 1 in C Major, Opus 15.
In 1998 reconstruction of the palace was carried out, where ceilings, roofs, fillings, plasters and covering were replaced. Strakova Street, located between Ventúrska Street and Hviezdoslav Square, was created by the break-through of the building.
Keglevich Palace is a witness to the city architecture and history of Bratislava's noble families. His history and connection with the creation of Ludwig van Beethoven make him an interesting point in the historical centre.
