Hodejov Castle Castle
Hodejovský castle, also known as Castle Hodejov, is a secular monument located in the village of Hodejov, Banská Bystrica region. This historic object represents the remains of masonry overgrown by trees and rainwoods on a steep rocky volcanic cone above the village at an altitude of 284 metres. The castle was first mentioned in 1281, indicating its long history.
The castle was created in 1281. The existence of the castle was mentioned again in 1308, when it was allegedly built under the orders of Hungarian ruler Charles I. Robert of Anja. In the early years of the 15th century, the castle became the property of Juraj from Jelšava, and after various political changes in 1438, Prince Fridrich of Ostrog captured it as a warrior of Polish King Vladislav I. Jagelovsky. In 1441 the castle was captured by Michal Orság and later transferred to the ownership of the Lorántffi family.
The Hodejov Castle was part of many political changes and fighting. Juraj from Širkovce decided in 1443 to resist the attack of the sections of Ján Jiskra from Brandýs, which eventually occupied the castle in the middle of the 15th century. At the beginning of the 16th century, the castle was owned by Ladislav Kubíni and his descendants.
In 1560 the armies of Ottoman Turks tried to seize the castle, but without success. Hungarian King Ferdinand I. Habsburg received warnings of the danger facing the castle, and in 1571 Ottoman soldiers actually seized the castle in a crafty way. This event marked the beginning of the breakdown and subsequent destruction of the castle.
Today, the remains of the Hodejov castle architecture are badly damaged by the work of the quarry. On the northeastern slope of the castle hill there is a municipal cemetery with a neo-Gothic chapel.
