Background and historical context
The history of the castle returns to the turn of the 12th century, when it is first mentioned in the Anonymous Chronicle. Archaeological findings confirm that the oldest settlement in this place comes from that time. Limestone took over the river Váho had significant strategic value, which led to its defence use. In the 12th century, a stone castle was built here, lying from a four-side tower with a protective wall and an overflowing two-storey palace. During the reign of Matúš Čák Trenčianský Beckov belonged to his estate.
In the second half of the 14th century, the castle became the property of the Stibor family, of origin from Poland, who were then one of the most powerful Hungarian families. During their reign, Beckov survived his greatest development and served as a center of their extensive assets.
Architecture and creation
At the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle tower was raised and the upper Gothic palace was built, containing a knight's hall and chapel. In the middle of the 16th century, due to the Turkish danger, the castle was built additionally - a cannon tower was built in the lower courtyard and the surrounding walls increased. Typically interesting is the upper, regularly defined courtyard of the castle, which was originally accessible by underpass and surrounded by the rest of the palace structures.
Owners, administrators, fates
After the 16th - century Stibors Beckov came into the hands of the Banffy family. After their extinction in 1646, the castle and the estate were divided among their successors, who no longer cared for its maintenance and repair. The castle began to fade slowly and the fire destroyed most buildings in 1727. Today Beckov castle is open to the public, but some parts such as the Stibor palaces and chapel remain unrefurbished.
Key events and attractions
Beckov Castle is the remains of several historical periods - from the turn of the 12th century to the Gothic, Renaissance to the Baroque. Its ruins are the remains of palaces, economic and defence buildings. Typically interesting is the upper courtyard of the castle, which was accessible underpass. In addition to the castle itself there is a Jewish cemetery with more than 100 tombstones, the oldest one from 1739.
Today
Today the area of Beckov Castle is open to the public. After the reconstruction, which saved some buildings of the upper castle, Beckov has preserved character from the time of its historical flowering. The castle is open from the beginning of May to the end of September every day except Mondays from 9:00 to 18:00. The surroundings of the castle offer beautiful views and sports activities such as mountain bikes or climbing on the castle rock.
