Welcome to the picturesque Pongracovce. You just stopped at a place that breathes the peace and history of our region. You stand right in front of the chapel of St. John Nepomuk, also known as the arrival chapel. Before we dive into her story, take a moment to look at the construction itself. It is a small, but all the more significant, architectural element that for centuries completes the color of our country and reminds us of the spiritual values of our ancestors.

When you look at the chapel in front of you, you may first be interested in its inconspicuousness and the dignity with which it stands along the way. Such arrival chapels were in the past important landmarks and places where travelers could stop for a moment, pray for a happy journey, or thank for a safe return home. Although the exact date of creation of this building remains shrouded by the mystery and the names of its builders or architects were not preserved in written sources, its presence here is not accidental. It bears witness to deep respect for Saint John of Nepomuk, who was worshiped in our ends as patron saint of bridges, waters, and protector of slander.

Step closer and note the details that make up its overall appearance. Although we do not know the particular historical period in which the chapel was built, its architecture bears the features of traditional folk architecture, which was long alive in this region of Prešov region. Look at her facade and overall composition. Feel the lines of construction that are simple but harmonious. It is this modesty that makes the chapel so impressive. It is not a monumental structure that should be radiant with its size, but rather a tiny gem that has the soul of the place hidden within it. Note how sensitive the chapel is sitting in the surrounding space. He's a silent witness to history that stood here long before we came here, and he'll be standing long after us.

Looking at this chapel naturally raises the question of what fates are associated with it. Although the historical personalities that would be directly related to its origin or message remain unknown to us, we can imagine generations of Pongráchovec who passed by daily. For many of them, this chapel was part of everyday life. Maybe this is where the peasants stopped on their way to the fields, maybe people were looking for comfort in difficult times. St John Nepomuk, to which the chapel is dedicated, was extremely popular in Central Europe, and its statues or chapels are found in almost every corner of our region. His story of loyalty and silence was a strong moral model for people in the past.

The interesting thing that makes this place special is this unknown history. In today's busy world, where we have everything mapped and documented, the chapel in Pongracovce acts as a silent mystery. It is a place where history is not lost in dates and names, but lives in the stone itself and in the atmosphere it creates. It is a reminder that even without large archives, places have their value and strength to reach us after long years.

I hope this short stop at St. John Nepomuk's Chapel has pleased you and brought you a moment of peace. Pongracs and their surroundings hide many other interesting places that are worth your attention. I invite you to walk around the village, to see its atmosphere and to discover other tiny traces of the past waiting for you. Thank you for your attention and I wish you many nice experiences in getting to know our region. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the chapel is during sunny days in spring or summer months, when the surrounding country of the Prešov region is the most beautiful and access to the monument is seamless. Do not forget to pack your camera while visiting, as the exterior of the chapel offers nice compositions especially in soft light during a gold watch. Since it is a small road structure, the visit is easy and suitable for families with children, to whom you can bring the history of St John Nepomuck. In the immediate vicinity within 30 minutes by car are located mainly surrounding villages and natural scenery typical for this region.

For children

Imagine you're walking through a time machine. Can you smell the smell of old paper and hear the knock of horse hooves on the field road? We just found ourselves in 1899. It's an incredible 127 years ago. There were no cell phones, tablets, or Internet at the time. People sent their messages by letters, and in the evening they lit on kerosene lamps. Just at this time, when the world looked quite different than today, the village of Pongrácovce grew small, but rare construction. It's Saint John Nepomuk's chapel.

Seasonal recommendations

The spring in Pongrákovce brings a gradual awakening of the surrounding landscape, when the meadows around St. John Nepomuk's Chapel begin to green and bloom. The atmosphere is peaceful and fresh in this period, ideal for meditation in the quiet countryside. I recommend a visit in the morning when the air is still clean and the morning sun pleasantly illuminates the architecture of the building. Don't forget your shoes into wet terrain, as spring melting snow and occasional rains can cause watering access roads.

Summer is the time when the chapel stands out in its full beauty under the clear blue sky, while the surrounding fields shine with golden shades. Thanks to its location, this place offers shelter from the heat, especially in the evening, when the sun leans towards the horizon and creates a soft, warm light suitable for photography. Although it is a quiet location, it is recommended to come early in the main summer season to avoid any increase in tourist movements. Do not forget the head cover and plenty of fluids, as shade may not be available near the memorable place.

Autumn adds a melancholy and nostalgic touch to the surrounding chapel, highlighting the colorful leaves and often occurring morning fog. The light is very specific, scattered and gentle at this time, which gives historical construction an unusual character. It is ideal time for longer walks for visitors, but faster dimming and colder winds need to be envisaged. I recommend layered clothing and strong shoes that will protect you from the cold of dry autumn days.

Winter changes the surroundings of St. John Nepomuk's Chapel to a quiet, white landscape, where the contrast between snow and historical masonry stands out. The atmosphere is particularly intimate and spiritual at this time, especially if you go for a walk during advent times. Due to the freezing weather and shorter days it is necessary to choose warm winter clothes, gloves and high quality footwear with slip soles. Plan a visit at noon, when visibility is the best and the sun warms the frozen landscape for at least a short time.
