Lupčiansky castle Castle
Ľupčiansky castle, also known as Ľupčiansky castle, is located in the village of Slovenská Ľupča in Banská Bystrica region. It stands above the village in the Hron valley about 10 km from Banská Bystrica and is a national cultural monument.
The castle called Liptza is mentioned in writing in 1250. Its formation could have affected the Mongol invasion in 1241 when a new seat was built on the site of the older castle. Location on the access road to Central Slovakian mining towns from the castle has made the frequent residence of rulers. In 1443 the castle was damaged by a strong earthquake. Extensive renovations followed, especially after 1572, when the reconstruction was carried out by the administrator Paul Rubigall.
The architecture of the castle combines Gothic and Renaissance elements. The area consists of 21 objects, including Gothic barbakán with a gate, Renaissance wall walls and bastions. Gothic main palace is located in the castle core.
The owners and administrators of the castle have changed throughout history. At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries there were frequent changes of owners. The castle was repeatedly looted and gradually lost the function of the right center. Only necessary repairs were made after the fire.
During the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) in the castle there was a hedge camp for persons with an alleged fascist background. After World War II, the building served as a school, charity facilities, and the seat of the Socialist Youth Union.
The castle is accessible from the village Slovenská Ľupča. The current condition is the result of reconstruction works, which since 2002 was carried out by the owner, Železiarne Podbrezová. These works contributed to the preservation of the historical area.

Tips for visitors
The best time for a visit to the Ľupčiansky castle is spring months, especially in May, when nature is in full blossom, or autumn, when colorful leaves are contrasting with stone walls.
We recommend wearing tight soles because the terrain can be uneven and steep. Do not forget enough drinking water and clothing suitable for various weather conditions.
For the best photos, look for the gold hour shortly before sunset, when light gently emphasizes the texture of old stones. The view from the castle to the surrounding valley is a suitable place for panoramic images.
For families with children, the tour of the castle is a great opportunity to adventure and discover history in the field, while when moving around the area we recommend increased supervision of the smallest ones due to exposed parts of the ruin.

For children
Centuries ago, exactly 426 years ago, Ľupčiansky castle was raised on the hillside of the mountain. This historical monument is like a hidden treasure that tells us a lot about the past of Slovakia. Imagine living in a time when masters and nobles walked in the light of golden lamps and dressed in long skirts and embroidery robes. The castle was like a wild but magically protected refuge. The menacing Mongol invasion of 1241 that threatened the entire Central European regions also affected its creation. How could nobles and their landlords protect their possessions from such dangers?
