Townhouses are urban residential buildings that evolved from medieval wooden houses to representative buildings. Their architecture reflected the property of the owner, available materials and functional needs of the time.

Background and historical context In the Middle Ages, wooden houses similar to folk architecture prevailed. The wealthier owners built brick objects. Material, heating, owner's property, and defensive needs influenced the form of houses.

Architecture and creation The following types developed in the Middle Ages: * Tower house: multi-storey block building with high stone wall. The economic object was for sanitary reasons at the opposite end of the plot. * Chamber House: had a simple longitudinal floor plan. He stayed from the front room at the front facade, a chamber oriented to the yard and black kitchen in the middle. * Hall house: Hall was repeated on the floor. Later she was located on the solar side.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the nobility bought several plots and rebuilt houses to represent residences due to county or military administration.

In the 19th century, rental houses with higher population density were created. They used tectonics of city palaces and metal gates in crossings. * Pavlačové domies: four-winged block with central courtyard and access through two crossings. Apartments connected orbiting spiders. * Houses of poverty and iron houses: they were located on the outskirts of the city at the walls and represented the minimum existence.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, parties for commercial use and advertising were modified.

Owners and Destinies During the Baroque period, a large part of the city building nobility took over, which changed the function of houses to administrative and representative centres.

Key events and attractions In Banská Štiavnica (e.g. Andrej Kmeťa Street) 5) construction with narrow streets was established. Cellars in the rock subsoil in some houses passed to the galleries, which remained after previous mining.

Today The function of housing was preserved in originally residential burgher houses, although the standards of equipment were changed.

For children

In Bardejov, burgher houses began to be built. That was when kings and nobles ruled over the land. In the 13th century, the local brotherhood developed and began building burgher houses. There were people living here who lived on business, craft, and earth. They were heroes trying to gain existence in this country. To provide for their families, houses that were the seat of burgher families began to be built.

We're in front of this townhouse today. You can imagine how people lived in these homes, how they met on the streets, and how they tried to provide their livelihood.
