Slovak Cultural Monument - Town House

Spišské Vlachy, Košice region

The townhouse is a typical example of a medieval residential house in Spišské Vlachy. This article focuses on the history and architecture of this important object.

During the Middle Ages, wooden houses were built, especially at solvent owners. The types of houses were influenced by the material, the way of heating, the solvency of the owner and the way of defense.

Tower house was a typical example of a block multi-storey building situated on a plot with a high stone wall. The economic object was situated at the opposite end of the plot to avoid sanitary problems. Tower houses together formed an effective defense system.

The chamber house had a simple longitudinal floor plan and was extremely convenient to expand the buildings on mostly narrow medieval plots. The passage allowed the extension of the living area at the superstructure of another floor.

The house with passage was extremely well functionally usable and for a very long period became the most frequent layout type of the city residential building.

In the 17th and 18th centuries there was an increased interest of nobility in the town, which related to its functions in the county administration. The nobles bought houses next to each other and rebuilt them into representative houses.

The population in cities grew, with much higher population density. They followed the traditions of the city's palace with tectonics, embodiments and entrances.

Pavlačové houses were characterized by a closed layout of a four-winged block with a central courtyard. Common sanitation facilities were located at the end of the pail.

Houses of poverty, iron houses were on the outskirts of the city and often formed part of the wall space. They represented the existential minimum.

The original objects were modernized mainly in the parter. Many retained their original functional use, but the sales method was more oriented towards advertising.

The function of housing remained in originally residential burgher houses until today, only the requirements of the standard of housing changed.

City House, Andreja Kmeťa Street 5, Banská Bystrica Štiavnica

Townhouses in Banská Štiavnica included an older unorganized building. The cellars, dug into the rock subsoil, passed in some houses into the sheds.

The structure of the object is characterized by rowing and passage areas. The city house has a significant position due to the original urban aspects.

This article focuses on the history and architecture of the burgher house, which is an important monument to Slovak culture. The monument is now part of the town square in Spišské Vlachy and is behind the visit.
