The Plavec Castle, also known as the Plavec Castle or the historical Detrekov stone, is a ruin on the hill Pohanská above the village Plavecké Podhradie in the Bratislava region. The monument dates back to the 13th century and served as a royal border fortress.

The castle was built after the Mongolian invasion of Hungary. It is believed to have been built in the 1950s or 1960s. The existence of the castle is documented in 1273, when there was a battle between the Hungarian army and the army of Přemysl Otakar II. According to a charter from 1291 Belo IV. donated land in the Kitchen of Detrich, son of Richtar Kunt, who probably built the castle on a royal initiative. The castle served as a guard and controlled the border area of the Kingdom of Hungary and the border with the Czech Kingdom. The location allowed for the exchange of signals with the castles Branč, Ostý Kameň and Korláš. The military fortress gradually became an economic and administrative center.

The architecture of the castle is the result of several reconstructions. The core consists of Gothic elements, such as the eastern tower from the middle of the 13th century, the wall and the palace from the same period. In the second half of the 16th century, the castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance fortress, renaissance palaces, bastion and the front wall. In the 17th century the fortifications added new cannon bastions. The documented buildings include a residential tower, economic building, tank, gate tower and several courtyards.

During history, the castle was owned by several estates. Since 1398 it was owned by Stibor of Stiborice. Later, the castle belonged to the Counts of St.Jur and Pezinok, to the Seredy family, to the Fugger family between 1553 and 1575 and finally to the Balaš family. During the ownership of Štefan Balasha, the printing works operated between 1579 and 1584. The printing works featured calendars, Bibles, and songbooks of Protestant writer Peter Bornemis. Since 1641 the castle was owned by Pálfiovci, while the estate was moved to Malaciek in the middle of the 17th century. The castle was damaged by the imperial army in 1706 after the conquest of the rebels and from that time it was not restored.

There are other historical and natural sites around the castle. On the mountain Pohanská lies the castle with its prehistoric and Celtic settlement. Near the northern hillside of the mountain is the Plavecka Cave, and at the southern foot lies the remains of the perimeter walls of the destroyed monastery. There is a Renaissance manor house in the village Plavecké Podhradie.

Conservation works are under way at the castle. Access to the monument is from the village Plavecký Mikuláš with connection to the tourist sign or from the village Plavecké Podhradie through the Renaissance mansion.

Tips for visitors

The road to the castle leads a steep forest path from the village Plavecké Podhradie. Check your timetable for transport by car or public transport.

Since it is a matter of moving in ruins, take strong shoes, plenty of drinking water, and food because there is no refreshment in place. Castle walls and towers are suitable for photography, especially at sunset, which illuminates the Záhorská lowland. There are other locations of the Small Carpathians within thirty minutes of the trip. For the unsecured edges of the castle walls and uneven terrain, care must be taken to the safety of children.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surrounding nature awakens from the winter sleep, the slopes of the Little Carpathians are dyed with fresh greenery, and the forest trails decorate the first spring flowers. The sun warms pleasantly during the day, but the rays penetrating through the bare branches of the trees do not yet have summer power, and the morning fog gives the ruins a mysterious atmosphere. During this period, you will appreciate solid shoes suitable for muddy terrain, which arises after melting snow, and layered clothing with a windproof jacket because it can blow sharply on a raised rocky spur. The ideal time to climb is the morning when the air is fresh and the surrounding landscape is the quietest.

During the summer, dense beech vegetation dominates, which surrounds the entire surroundings of the castle and leaves create a pleasant shade on forest sections of access routes. The light is sharpest in the noon, but late in the afternoon and evening bring warm golden rays, which beautifully illuminate the old stone walls and offer distant views of the Záhorská lowland. The main summer season attracts more visitors, so it is worth going to the hill in the morning while temperatures are bearable. Remember to pack enough fluids, a head covering and an effective insect repellent that is active in the forest.

Autumn turns mixed forests around Plavecký Podhradie into a varied range of shades from yellow to orange to deep red, creating an incredibly photogenic scenery. The low sun creates long shadows and often masks the valley into the picturesque haze, which amplifies the melancholy mood of decaying historical walls. Since the leaves on the pavements may be slippery after rain, tourist shoes with slippers and warm, unpromoted clothing are essential. The best time to visit is around noon, when the morning fog usually melts and temperatures reach the daily maximum.

Winter brings deep tranquility and freezing silence to the Little Carpathians, while the snowy remains of the castle contrast with the dark forest and white slope. The low winter sun creates short but extremely clean light conditions for photographers, especially during bright days. The condition for a safe exit is winter hiking shoes, ideally complemented by anti-slip covers for icy terrain, and warm, quality winter equipment including cap and gloves. On the trip, take an early afternoon to come down in daylight because the days are very short in this period.
