Shebesh Castle Small castle
Šebeš Castle, also known as Šebeš Castle or Šebeš Castle, is a national cultural monument and archaeological site in the cadastral area of the village Podhradik, located in the Prešov district. This historical castle is proud of its ruins from the 13th century and lies on the hill above the village with a height of 529 meters above the sea, giving it a unique perspective on the surrounding Slanské vrchy mountains.
Originally on the site of the castle stood an estate called Havran's Abode (Hulloudzalasa), which was already abandoned in 1285. This name was revolted from the black habitat of the knightly order, suggesting that the place could have been originally a wooden guard drain. At the beginning of the 14th century, the hill was called the Cat, now known as the Zamek. In 1315 the castle was exhibited and its existence is confirmed by King Charles Robert's tentative document, which confirmed the estate of Knight Son.
Architecturally with the playground Shebeshes haughty the walled castle on an eight - foot [8 m] - wide and 60 - foot [60 m] - long blackberry. The milder east side was secured into a rock carved with a neck trench, which was 8-10 metres wide and 5-6 metres deep. On the edge of the platform stretched the perimeter wall, on the west side stood circular with a diameter of 5 meters and a thick wall of 1.5 meters. In the eastern part of the blackberries was a residential palace with dimensions of 9x6 meters, whose west wall also served as a defence wall over the entrance to the castle.
The castle belonged to Son's descendants until 1491. It was then donated by King Vladislav to the city of Košice, but in years later it became part of the conflicts between Prešov and Košice. In 1550 the castle was burned by Prešov inhabitants after an unresolved dispute, which was also brought to justice. Owner Francis Sebesi tried to pierce the development of the conflict, but as a result of subsequent events the castle was irreversibly destroyed.
Today, Shebeš castle lies on the northwest edge of the Slanské vrchy mountains and is densely overgrown with forest flowers, shrubs, and trees. The trails of the castle are difficult to read among many rocks. Under the southeast side of the hill flows the Šebastovka stream, and on the east side is visible steep rock wall as the rest of the former quarry.
Access to the castle is possible on a path beginning above the village Podhradik near the Šebastovka stream. The road rises to the top of the castle hill, where it is necessary to be careful because of the large rocks. At the top of the castle there is an orientation board, from which the view of Slanské vrchy and village Podhradik is opened.
Shebeš Castle is a fascinating monument that brings rich historical heritage. Its ruins testify to the past full of conflicts and changes in ownership, thus becoming an important place for any interested history of Slovakia. Visiting the Castle Shebeš offers not only a view of the past, but also an opportunity to enjoy the peaceful and picturesque surroundings of the Slanské vrchy mountains.
