St Martin's church, located in the village Lipany in the Sabinov district, Prešov region, is originally a Gothic sacral building from the 14th century. This church is an important cultural monument of Slovakia and has a rich history that is based on the background of political and religious changes in the region.

The church was founded in the 14th century as the town of Lipany. The original founder is considered Rikolf II. from Kamenice, who died in 1360. At that time, the church was dedicated to the Bishop of St. Martin of Tours. Historical sources indicate that Lipany could be a parish in the vice-archidiaconate as early as 1302 and earlier, as evidenced by their long historical tradition as a spiritual centre.

Architecturally, the church evolved from the original Gothic building into a more complex form. In the 17th century, the church tower was rebuilt and classicistically modified, an example of architectural changes in the region. After the fire in 1888 it was restored with the traditional style of Eastern Slovakian sacral from the period 1770 to 1830, which gave the church its characteristic form.

The church has undergone several dramatic changes in ownership and administration. After the extinction of the genus Tarczay he donated Ferdinand I. Habsburg in 1556 Lipian property to Ján Desewffy de Czernek. The Reformation was spreading during that period, and around 1589 the inhabitants - originally Roman Catholics - became evangelizers. During the two centuries the church was considered evangelical three times, namely in the period 1598 - 1672, 1680 - 1691 and 1693 - 1748.

In the 18th century, both entrance halls and sacristies from the north were added to the church. In 1937 the tower passed another repair, where the native of Lipian, Maximilian Hudy, was selected as the main organizer. In the 1970s, roofing was replaced from metal to copper.

The last extensive reconstruction and modernization of the church was carried out between 2005 and 2007. This process was necessary to solve moisture problems, lack of heating and insufficient ventilation. New lighting and a bell were installed in the tower in 2009.

Today the church is located in the middle of an old market square in Lipany, where it is surrounded by panel construction with alleys of lime. In his courtyard are the statues of St. Jude and Florian, as well as the statue of St. Martin from Lipian academic sculptor Peter Beň.

St. Martin's church in Lipany is an example of rich historical heritage and architectural evolution. Its long history, from the original Gothic construction to the reform period to the modernization of the 21st century, reflects the changes that Slovakia has undergone in political and religious fields. This church is an integral part of the cultural and spiritual life of the village of Lipany and is worth visiting so that people learn more about its rich past.

Welcome, dear visitors. You are standing in front of the majestic church of Saint Martin in Lipany, in the heart of Prešov region. At first glance you will be interested in its robust facade, which emits peace and a certain seriousness, typical for Gothic sacral buildings from the fourteenth century. The tower, which towers above the city, is also visible from a distance and indicates that this area has been an important spiritual center for the local population for centuries. You see a cool stone material that captures light and throws fine shadows on the ground, creating an atmosphere that invites you to stop for a moment and think about the history that has taken place here.

Let's move on to the past and discover how this church originated. The first references to the Lipanos as a parish in the vice-archidiaconate dates back to 1302, indicating that the community was already ready to create its own spiritual home. Eighty years later, in 1349, Saint Martin's church itself was founded. The founder is Rikolf II. from Kamenice, a significant noble personality, which with its end in 1360 left a message in the form of this building. His death and subsequent construction of the church show how important the local nobles played in the development of religious and cultural institutions in the region.

Now pay attention to the architecture that presents you with a rich layer of historical layers. The Gothic roots of the church are noticeable in its narrow windows and high arches, which point to heaven and symbolize spiritual height. In the 17th century the church tower was rebuilt and adapted in a classicistic style, which brought a new, harmonious contrast to the original Gothic structure. This architectural intervention is particularly visible in the shapes and proportions of the tower, where a strict Gothic line meets with the softer, symmetrical forms of classicism. The fire in 1888, which struck the church, was followed by an extensive renovation that preserved the traditional style of Eastern Slovakian sacral architecture. The reconstruction not only saved the construction from extinction, but also underlined regional identity and artistic traditions, which are passed on from generation to generation in this part of Slovakia.

In the history of the church there are also significant personalities and events that shaped his fate. Apart from Rikolf II. from Kamenice, who was the original founder, it is an important moment to donate Lipi assets to Ján Desewffy de Czernek in 1556 by Emperor Ferdinand I. Habsburg. This gift strengthened the financial stability of the church and enabled further development. In 1589, the population moved to the evangelical faith, reflecting religious changes that affected the entire territory during the Reformation period. These transformations brought a new dimension to the church, as it became a witness not only of Catholic but also of the evangelical services, thus becoming a place of dialogue and religious harmony.

An interesting fact that may inspire your curiosity is the fact that the church tower, which was rebuilt in the 17th century, bears traces of two architectural styles. On the one hand, there is a Gothic fortress that reflects the original character of the building, on the other hand, classicistic elements that bring elegance and symmetry typical for the Baroque period. This dual nature often raises questions about the exact reason and who precisely proposed this adjustment. Although the names of architects are unknown, their work remains a living testimony to how architectural trends have changed and adapted to the local circumstances and needs of believers.

When you gaze around, see how the church fits into the surrounding landscape and urban environment. Its stone structure creates a contrast to green meadows and historic houses, which form a typical panorama of Lepanese. Imagine the peace that it exudes, and imagine how many generations were standing here, praying, and seeking comfort in difficult times. St. Martin's church is not only an architectural witness of the past, but also a living place where history, culture and spirituality meet.

In conclusion, we invite you to look at this historical gem further, discover its details and reflect on the stories that have taken place here. Every stone, every line and every treatment carries a legacy of past centuries waiting to be discovered by curious visitors like you. Thank you for finding the time for this trip to the past, and we wish you a pleasant walk through the Lipanos and other historical gems that this region offers. May the journey fill you with inspiration and respect for the inheritance that unites us.
