St. Nicholas church is a Roman Catholic church from 1280 in Starý Ľubovňa. The building is located on St. Nicholas Square. Its building history extends from the Middle Ages to the Baroque.

The church stands on the hill above the river Poprad. Originally, the building was single-shiped with a right-handed sanctuary and a tower facing west. Until 1780 there was a cemetery nearby.

During the Renaissance period, enlargement took place. In the early 17th century, St. Anna's chapel was added, probably related to the establishment of St. Anna's Brotherhood in 1604. Later the chapel of Our Lady of Rosary for the Brotherhood of St. Rosary was added. In the second half of the 17th century, the sacristy was regulated, while the stone school was held in the city at that time. In the second half of the 18th century, the church underwent Baroque modification. The construction extended to the three-ships and the main ship was re-enclosed. The interior was complemented by an empor with stucco decoration.

It's a three-ship structure with an east-oriented sanctuary. In 1843 the building was hit by a fire that destroyed the roofs and damaged the tower, which was then built. The interior renovation took place in 1905, when the Rožňava painter Julius Ádám brought out the painting. Probational research from 2016 revealed on the northern wall a presbytery of a part of medieval painting with appearances from the smuggling cycle and a picture of the worship of three kings.

In the interior there is a winning arch from the end of the 13th century, a late-Gothic stone baptismal, gothic pastophorium and late-Gothic tombstone boards. Among the artworks are the statue of Madonna from Ľubovňa from 1360, the main baroque altar of St. Nicholas in the role of bishop, side altars and sculpture The mourning of Christ. Under the church there are crypts left unexplored.

We welcome you to Stará Ľubovňa, in the heart of Prešov region, where history connects with the present in every single stone. You are standing right in front of the church of St. Nicholas, which eats in the city as a silent witness to the changes, victories and everyday life of the local inhabitants. Now that you look at it, you may only perceive the calm atmosphere of this place, but behind its walls lies a story that began long before modern cities were formed in this area.

Let's go to the depths of time together. This church is not just a building but a real building chronicle. Its roots date back to 1280, which means that its first stones were laid at the end of the third century. Imagine the events these walls had to experience. From the Middle Ages, when architecture was a symbol of stability and faith, to the Baroque period, when a new spirit of ornamentality and dynamism was introduced into buildings. Although the exact names of architects who designed the temple remained in the forgotten history, their work has survived for centuries and still allows us to feel the spirit of the past.

Now I want to invite you to look at the construction itself with a glance. Notice how various epochs erupted in her appearance. Since the church's building history extends from the Middle Ages to the Baroque, each part of the building can tell a different story. Look at the overall composition and see how the building is naturally written into the city panorama. Although outsiders may be silent right now, the architecture itself speaks clearly of the meaning it had for the community in Stará Ľubovňa.

If you move into the interior now, treasures are waiting for you, which are indispensable in regional artistic history. Your glance should be looking for a winning arch in the first place. This is a rare element from the late 13th century, which is a direct link with the early Middle Ages. It is a detail that requires a peaceful contemplation, because in today's day you will rarely find such authentic medieval elements.

In addition to the arch, there is another extraordinary piece of spiritual heritage - the statue of Madonna from Ľubovňa. This statue dates back to 1360 and represents the peak of its time. When you stand before her, consider how many generations of people have looked before you in this image of comfort and hope. It is not only a work of art but also a symbol of the identity of this city, which survived the turns of events and remained preserved for us, current visitors.

Well, every historic building has its own secrets that remain hidden from a glance. And this is where the time comes for one fascinating interesting thing that was revealed just a very short time ago. In 2016, the church has collected probe research, which produced surprising results. Just on the northern wall of the presbytery were discovered parts of medieval painting. These are fragments that depict the scenes of the smuggling, or suffering, and the way of Jesus to Golgot.

Imagine the moment when, after hundreds of years, experts saw again the colors and shapes that were covered with layers of time and color. These paintings are like encrypted messages from the past that remind us that the medieval church was not only a proud wall but was filled with colorful images to help believers in prayer and meditation. It is a direct touch with the time when church walls were open books for those who could not read.

Now that we are slowly ending this short tour, I suggest you take your time. Stay here for a while, feel the silence and smell of the old stone. St. Nicholas Church in Stará The Ľubovňa is not only a museum, but a living organism that keeps spreading its secrets. We invite you now to examine the surroundings in peace, perhaps to stop at the details we have mentioned, and to be guided by your own curiosity.

Thank you for sharing with us these moments near this historic monument. We hope that this short trip to the Middle Ages and the Baroque has enriched you and that you are leaving with the feeling that you have better come to know the soul of this city. We wish you a pleasant rest of the day and a pleasant continuation in your journey along beautiful Prešov region. Goodbye.
