Townhouse in Košice - Old Town

Košice-Old Town, as one of the oldest settlements in Slovakia, has a rich history and cultural monument. One of the most interesting objects in this area is the burgher house, which is located in the city center.

This article is about townhouses.

During the Middle Ages were wooden houses (typologically very close to folk architecture), uniquely at solvent owners, brick. The types of houses were influenced mainly by the material from which the house was made, the way of heating, solvency of the owner and the way of defense.

The tower house was a block multi-storey building, situated on a plot with a high stone wall as a rule as part of the line building block, street, square. The economic object was for sanitary reasons situated at the opposite end of the plot. Tower houses together formed an effective defense system.

Chamber house - layout was not different from the peasant house , had a simple longitudinal floor plan . The facade was situated front room, the court-oriented chamber and between them in the middle part was located black kitchen.

Hall house - at the disposal repeated the room hall and upstairs. Later, the hall was situated according to the orientation of the house in the city to the solar side.

The house with passage - was extremely well functionally usable and for a very long period became the most frequent layout type of city residential building.

In the 17th and especially in the 18th century there was an increased interest of nobility in the city, which related to its functions in the county or military administration. The noble house was bought next to each other - sometimes two to three plots - and it was rebuilt into representative buildings.

The city palace - the main feature was arranged front courtyard. In front of the floor there were social spaces, which led to comfortable, architecturally and visually highlighted staircases.

The population in cities was growing. Residential rental houses ensured a much higher population density. They followed the traditions of the city's palace with tectonics, embodiments, and entrances to passages, which were often provided with handy metal gates.

Pavlačové houses - were characterized by a closed layout of a four-winged block with a central courtyard, accessible through two opposite crossings, to which were opened three- to four-storey facades with orbiting spiders, making available individual apartments.

Houses of poverty, iron houses - were on the outskirts of the city, often forming part of the walls. They represented the existential minimum.

The original objects were modernized mainly in the parter. Many retained their original functional use (trade), but the sales method was more oriented towards advertising.

The function of housing remained in originally residential burgher houses until today, only the requirements of the standard of housing changed.

City House, Andreja Kmeťa Street 5, Banská Bystrica Štiavnica

Townhouses in Banská Štiavnica included an older unorganized building, leaving narrow streets between the buildings. The cellars, dug into the rock subsoil, crossed into the galleries in some houses, which were the remnant of the former activity.

The structure of the townhouse is remarkable by its architectural concept and functionality. Its important place in the history of Kosice-Staré The city makes it an interesting object worth visiting.

Today

The current state of the burgher's house is preserved and can therefore be visited. Its important place in the history of Kosice-Staré The city makes it an interesting object worth visiting.

Welcome to the heart of historical baskets. You stand by one of the most interesting objects in the whole area of Košice-Old Town. The first impression this house gives is the sense of stability and depth of time that works here in this street. Now, when you look at this object, try to perceive its presence in this dense urban environment and feel the atmosphere of a place that has witnessed the constant movement of people, power and change. This house is not a mere building; it is a piece of mosaic from which the whole history of the city is folded.

To understand what you see before yourself today, we need to go back to the past in our thoughts. The history of this place begins in the Middle Ages. At that time, Košice was formed as an important center and the first houses began to be built in urban areas. At the time, however, architecture was not as we know today. Wooden buildings were dominated and gradually began to be supplemented with brick houses. It was during this period that the basic skeleton of the city began to be built, which later grew into a form that we admire so much today in the historical centre. Construction of stone and bricks was then a symbol of the resilience and gradual expansion of urban life.

Over time, however, the social and political map of the city changed. When we reach the seventeenth century, you will see another important breakthrough. During this period, the city began to show increased interest in the nobility to stay directly in their walls. It was not just a matter of comfort, but above all of administrative functions. Cities like Košice became centres of power, where decisions were made on many things that had an impact on the whole region. The nobles needed to be close to central processes, to trade and to governance, so their presence in urban areas became increasingly significant. This movement from rural settlements to urban streets has fundamentally changed the nature of architecture and the overall appearance of the historical core.

The 18th century brought another fascinating stage. Homes that had previously served primarily as practical places to live or shop began to be rebuilt. They were no longer mere houses, but the representative headquarters of the nobility began to be established. During this period, the emphasis shifted from purely functional use to aesthetics and expression of status. Every building that was then being built was designed to demonstrate the importance and position of its owners. That's when the typical urban character was formed, where every facade and every front of the building carried a message about who lives in the city and what its place is in society.

Now that you're standing by this object, try to pay attention to its overall structure. Although we do not know the names of the specific architects who signed these buildings, we can see the result of a century of experience with urban construction. Look at how this object engages in the rhythm of the entire street. See the harmony it creates with the surrounding buildings. Although the architecture has changed from medieval wooden structures to representative settlements, it still feels connected to the local environment. Feel the atmosphere that rules here - it's a combination of historical weight and constant life that never died in this part of Košice.

Although history has not given us the names of the specific individuals who lived in these walls, we can imagine them through their lifestyle. Imagine the noble leaders who organized their affairs here in the eighteenth century, or the townspeople who built their livelihoods in the medieval city. Each of them put time, energy, and resources into this city, creating what we now call a historical heritage. This house has witnessed their daily achievements and the challenges of living in a dynamic city centre.

However, there is also one interesting thing that links ancient history with modern era. Although perceived as an object with deep roots, in its present form, two thousand are an important point in the year. This year the building of the townhouse in Košice was created in how we perceive it today. It is a fascinating moment when history meets today. This object is proof that we need not only to admire history passively, but we can also actively maintain it and create new chapters within it. It is a combination of a century tradition of building and modern approach to the historical environment.

This house is one of the most interesting objects in the whole area of Košice-Staré The city just because it carries so many layers of time. From the first wooden buildings, through the rise of nobility and the conversion of houses into representative settlements, to the modern era, this object continues to fascinate. It is a living story of a city that is constantly evolving, but never forgets its foundations.

Now that you have gained a better overview of what this house represents, we invite you to continue your discovery. Košice has an infinite amount of secrets in it, and every other street can surprise you with something new. Continue your tour with the historic center, see every facade and every street, because each of them is part of the great story that this city is. Thank you for your journey together over time and we wish you a pleasant rest of your discovery.

Tips for visitors

For a visit are recommended morning hours or late afternoon, when there are fewer people in the historical center of Košice. The center can be reached by public transport or by car. Thematic route

Košice-Old The city is the heart of the historical core of the city, where gothic and renaissance elements alternate. Since there are no specific monuments specified in the given area, I propose a route that focuses on the tour of the immediate area and the surroundings of the main destination, i.e. the townhouse. This route allows you to discover the architectural details and atmosphere of the old town without the need to go to more distant parts.

Townhouse This object is the main point of interest and a demonstration of typical Central European burgher architecture. It is worth a visit because of its preserved exterior, which testifies to the rich business life of Košice in the past. Details of the facade and window frames offer a view of the life of Košice citizens centuries ago.

Nádvoří burgher's house If access to the inner court is available, this area forms a quiet oasis in the middle of a busy old town. The courtyard often serves as a place for cultural events or as a place to relax, where you can enjoy the climate and historical atmosphere. It is an ideal place to photograph and lock up above the history of the building.

Surroundings of the street near the townhouse The surroundings of the house are full of other historical buildings, which together form a harmonious architectural unit. Walking along the neighboring streets makes it possible to admire other examples of city buildings and to feel like in a lively open-air museum. This immediate environment is crucial for understanding the context in which the house was built.

Entry gate or portal Many burgher houses have interesting entrance portals or gates, which are often decorated with coats of arms or reliefs. A careful examination of these details may reveal interesting historical facts about original owners. It's a great way to enrich your knowledge of local history on the ground.

This short route can be mastered in a few hours and offers a deeper insight into the architecture and history of Košice-Old Town. We recommend bringing a map or using a mobile application for precise orientation in narrow streets. During the tour, beware of architectural details that are often passing eye easily escape. This route is suitable for lovers of history, architecture and photographers who are looking for authentic experiences from the historical core of the city.
