Townhouse in Košice-Staré village The town in the Košice region is a terraced cross-country object, whose origin extends to the second half of the 14th century and 15th century and it was structurally influenced by the Renaissance. The Slovak Monument Office registers this object under the number ÚZPF 1209 and it consists of one building object.

Meštianske domies in the Middle Ages have evolved from simple wooden or brick buildings to difficult pass-through types that served not only for housing, but also for commercial and craft purposes. During the Middle Ages, houses were typologically very close to folk architecture and were affected by material, the way of heating, the solvency of the owner and the way of defense. Among the medieval types were tower houses, chamber houses, hall houses, houses with passage and houses with height. In the 17th and especially in the 18th century there was an increased interest of nobility in staying in the city in connection with its functions in the county or military administration, when the nobility bought side-standing houses and rebuilt them into representative residences such as the city palaces. In the 19th century, the increase in the number of inhabitants in cities brought residential rental houses, pavlač houses and houses of poverty or iron houses on the outskirts of the city. In later periods and in the 20th century, the original buildings were modernized mainly in the parter, while the function of housing was preserved in originally residential burgher houses to this day, only the requirements of the standard of housing changed.

Architectural-historical research and records of the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic rank this object between crossroads and terraced burgher houses of Renaissance origin. In the 19th century, the architectonic formwork of burgher houses changed over the centuries, building on the traditions of the city's palace with tectonics, embodiments and entrances to the passages provided by noble metal gates. The original objects were modified mainly in the parterre, where commercial use was preserved, while the way of sale was more oriented towards advertising.

Specifically historical records of private owners, administrators or dramatic fates of this particular house in Košice-Staré The city is not specified in the available documents. In the general context of burgher houses, however, owners often changed the functional content of the ground floor from residential to production or commercial and nobility in later periods merged neighbourhood plots to build city palaces.

Detailed records of specific historical events, battles or personalities connected directly with this house in Košice-Old Town do not specify the documents. The development of the object is connected with general building and social transformations of the urban environment from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance to the modern 20th century.

The function of housing has been preserved in originally residential burgher houses to this day, while only the requirements for standard housing have changed. The cross-country burgher houses still form the historical structure of the towns and commemorate the long development of craft, commercial and residential architecture. Visit of this monument in Košice-Starom The town offers a view of the architectural development of urban construction from the Middle Ages and Renaissance to the present.

Welcome to Košice, the heart of the historic Old Town, which breathes through centuries of rich history. Right now, you're standing in front of a remarkable burgher house that grows up in front of you as a silent witness of the past. Make yourself comfortable, put on your headphones, and let me accompany you in a place that shows layers of past going deep into the Middle Ages. When you look ahead to yourself, you see a rowdy passing object that immediately catches your attention by its majestic presence in the urban environment. Imagine that the origin of this object extends to the second half of the 14th century and the 15th century. Even in those ancient times, the heart of the medieval trade and crafts was beating. Košice was the busy center, crossroads and the home of successful townspeople who suffered from decent housing and representation. Let's go back in time and see how this house changed with the city. Building development of the object was later strongly influenced by the Renaissance, which brought new aesthetic values, emphasis on symmetry and the comfort of urban life. During the 17th and 18th centuries there were other reconstructions of burgher houses, when the building was adapted to the period trends and needs of its inhabitants. In the 19th century, these houses were proudly linked to the traditions of the city palace, which gave facades and the overall glowing of a hallmark of special grandeur. Later, in the 20th century, the necessary modernization of objects occurred, which touched mainly the parter, the ground-floor part of the serving trade and entry, in order to keep up with the dynamically changing world. Now pay attention to the very details of the construction. It was built by unknown architects, but their handwriting left a permanent mark in the form of thought-out row layout and pass-by character. When you look at the facade in front of you, see the harmonious mixture of medieval foundations and later Renaissance adjustments. Although the names of the original owners or famous historical personalities associated with this particular house shrouded the cover of mystery, the genius loci of this place is almost tangible. Imagine the noise that prevailed here centuries ago - horse carriages passing through underpass, coin cricket in stores on the ground floor, and the steps of people in period clothing. An interesting thing you must know about this place is the fact that the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic registers this object under the number ÚZPF 1209 and consists of one complete building object. Behind this narrow official sentence lies a huge amount of work of experts. Architectural-historic research and records of the Monument Office helped to detect layers that would otherwise remain hidden from the sight of a common passerby. It is thanks to careful research that we can present this house precisely in the context of the development of Košice architecture. When you stand there, realize that you are looking at a building that has survived centuries of wars, fires, economic ups and downs. It's a real history book written in bricks, plasters and stone. I believe a walk through Košice's Old Town will be inspiring for you. Follow your steps further, discover other corners of this picturesque region and see the stories that the streets of Košice tell at every corner. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant experience of getting to know the city again. Goodbye!

Tips for visitors

We recommend a visit in the early morning hours or later upset when the streets of Kosice are quieter and the facade of the house can be seen in detail. Since it is a residential building, respect the privacy of the people and focus on the exterior.

In the historical centre, the most practical choice is a pedestrian tour. We recommend taking comfortable shoes and camera. You don't need special outdoor equipment.

Use natural light for photos before sundown, when reliefs and ornaments of the facade stand out.

Families with children can make the walk more attractive by playing to find architectural details, such as coats of arms or historical ornaments on the walls.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings to Košice waking nature and sun in historical streets of the Old Town. The facade of the townhouse stands out in the morning light, which highlights the architectural details of the masonry and windows. During this period, a light jacket or sweater is recommended, as afternoon walks to the historical cores tend to be windy. A good time to admire the exterior is the morning when the streets are quieter.

Summer brings long sunny days and plenty of natural light in the evening to photograph the details of the facade. The city's greenery provides shade, although the noon rays can ignite the tiles, so it is advisable to visit the monument early in the morning or evening. In the main season, airwear, sunglasses, and head cover will come together, as there is the minimum natural sun shelter at the store in the historical centre.

Lighting is more subdued in this period, and the sun low above the horizon creates shadows on historical portals and roof structures. Waterproof footwear and a warm coat for dry weather and stronger wind in alleys are recommended for the tour. Good time to visit is afternoon.

Winter brings peace to the Old Town, especially when the center covers snow. For the outdoor tour, warm shoes, hats, gloves and thick jacket are needed. A good time to stop in memory is just after dark.
