Black Castle Castle
The Black Castle is located in the Tribeč border in Slovakia, 13 km north of Zlaté Moravce. This medieval castle complex is known for its historical uncertainty and strategic position, which allowed visual contact with other castles such as Gýmes, Hrušov and Velčický hrad. The existence of the Black Castle dates back to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.
The history of the Black Castle is little known, as archaeological research on the site started only in 2005, 2007 and 2009. These work campaigns helped to determine more precisely the time of the castle and its disposition. The castle was built on the site with settlement from the Bronze Age, which is evidenced by findings showing Slavic settlement in the 9th and 10th centuries. He probably served as a protective fortification from the Hungarians.
Medieval stone castle was built at the end of the 13th or early 14th century, probably in connection with the gold-ruding activity in the nearby Zlatné. Historian John Lukačka assumes that the castle was built by Baasha at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1341 their sons Mark and John were mentioned as owners of Zlatna.
The 13th-century finding material indicates the existence of an older wood-hybrid. After Baasha, who probably died without descendants, King Zlatno gave Blazej Forgáč in 1386. His heirs quickly arrived, and in 1396 they were mentioned as owners of Lawrence of Great Uherie. The evidence suggests that the castle could have been destroyed at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, but maybe it was temporarily controlled by the cousins in the middle of the 15th century.
From 1516 comes the only written mention of the castle, when the Forgáčs asked the king for the right to gold-ruding activities on the estate Fekhetwar (Black Castle). Findings from the 16th century indicate a possible temporary recovery effort.
Since 2006 archaeological research and preservation works have been carried out in the Black Castle. The castle is registered by the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic under number ÚZPF 1587 as the only object: Castle (ruina, Gothic, 2/2 13.st.-1/2 14.st).
The Black Castle represents an interesting historical monument with the connection with gold-ruding activities in Zlatné. Archaeological findings and preservation works help uncover its history, which is still discovered for future generations.

Welcome to the beautiful Nitra region, in the village of Velčice, where we will welcome you to one of the most mysterious cities in the entire Tribeč border. Right now, you are standing in front of a memory that conceals hundreds of years of silence and oblivion. Before you lies the Black Castle. When you look at it, you may at the first moment see only a silent witness of ancient times, slowly falling into the arms of nature, but in this very quietness and confusion lies its greatest charm. Breathe in the clear air of this area and try to feel the atmosphere of a place that has ever certainly played an important role in the organization of this region.
Let us now look together at when and why this castle was created. Although the exact chronology of its construction remains unknown at many points, historical sources and research lead us to the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Imagine the time of the Middle Ages, when castles were key points of land control, symbols of power and, at the same time, necessary defence fortresses. In the case of the Black Castle, however, the key motive is probably not only the defence but also the economy. The castle is located in the vicinity of the village Zlatno, where at that time an intensive gold-ruding activity took place. Gold was the most valuable metal in the Middle Ages, and its mining required not only expertise but, above all, strong protection. It is very likely that the Black Castle was built precisely to guard the roads, ensure the safety of miners and protect precious metal from possible attacks or thefts.
Nyni pay attention to the building itself. When looking at what is left of the castle, note how architecture is naturally associated with terrain. In this case, we will not look for magnificent palaces or decorated gates because time and nature have taken the castle back. Focus on the overall timetable and how the castle uses strategic location in the country. Look at the remains of brick parts and see the texture of stone that has resisted centuries of rain, frost and wind. Consider, then, the effort to bring the material to this place and build a fortress to resist enemies. Note how the castle dominates the surrounding hills and provides a wide view of the landscape, which in the Middle Ages was a fundamental prerequisite for any successful defence construction.
But who were the people who lived here? Who believed in the safety of these walls? Here we come to one of the greatest mysteries of this place. The name of the architects who designed the castle and the names of the nobles or rulers who could spend the night here do not appear in preserved written sources. The Black Castle is so anonymous, so quiet. Historian Ján Lukačka tried to solve this puzzle, and in his reasoning he assumed that the castle could be built by specific groups of people who were active in the region at the time. Although accurate identities remain the subject of discussion and further research, the very fact that experts are interested in the castle today shows how much value it represents for us. It is a castle without a name, a castle without a known master, which gives it such a special, almost mystical character.
It is this historical confusion that makes the Black Castle a fascinating place. Why is the castle called Black? Is it because of the color of the stone, because of the dark legends that may have spoken about it in the villages, or maybe because of the fact that there is such a dark, unknown point left in historical records? This mystery makes us turn on our imagination. Looking around you now, try to imagine how the voices of the guards sounded here seven hundred years ago, what was the noise of gold processing in nearby Zlatné, and how the view of the untouched nature of Tribeč spread out of these walls. The Black Castle is not just a ruin, it is a question that the Middle Ages left us in the country, and we are today the ones trying to answer it.
It is fascinating to think that there are places that have almost completely disappeared from the memory of written history, but still physically exist. The Black Castle is exactly this example. While large cities and famous walls have their detailed chronicles, this castle is silent. And maybe it's the greatest power in this silence. He invites us to write to ourselves the missing chapters of his story so that we can see the connection between nature, mining and the need for security in uncertain times of the Middle Ages.
Now that you have gained a basic overview of this mysterious place, I invite you to walk around in peace. Take your time. Let yourself be guided by your intuition and try to perceive the silence that surrounds you. Look again at the stones you just saw, and think about how many stories they hide. Perhaps they answer the question of why this castle is still standing, although we know so little about it.
Before you say goodbye to us and follow your path, stop for a moment and take a mental photograph of this place. Black castle in the village Velčice will remain in our hearts as a symbol of the unknown, as a witness to the ancient golden glory and as a silent guardian of the Tribec border. Thank you for spending this short time with us and for allowing us to accompany you in discovering this fascinating monument. We wish you a pleasant rest of the day, peaceful walks and many new discoveries in the beautiful Nitra region. Goodbye.
