The Oponic Castle is a ruin on the western outskirts of the Tribeč Mountains above the village of Oponice in the Nitra region. The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1300. The complex consists of 14 registered objects that document the construction development from the 13th to the beginning of the 17th century.

The Čákovci are considered founders and first owners. After the death of Matúš Čák, in 1329 he became the owner of Mikuláš Gutkeled, since 1389 the castle was owned by Dezider Kaplay and since 1392 he was owned by Mikuláš Ewrs, the founder of the Aponi family. The castle was defensive and underwent several reconstructions. Its importance gradually declined as a result of gender disputes of the Aponia and changes in the housing requirements of the nobility.

The area of the castle is registered by the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic under number ÚZPF 216. It consists of 14 objects, including palaces, bastions, farm buildings and ditches. The castle core contains a Gothic tower of refuge from the 13th century, a wall from the same period and a southwestern palace. The suburb, which originated in the 15th century and was adapted during the Renaissance period, includes the northeastern palace, economic construction, basthion, cannon bastion and vale. The western part of the fortification with a corner bastion is preserved to the greatest extent. The ruins form perimeter walls around the courtyard, in which there are recognizable parts of the structures of palaces and farm buildings.

In 1430 the castle was conquered and damaged by the Hussite troops, then repaired. Thanks to maintenance resisted in the 16th and early 17th century Turkish attacks. Property disputes between the Appani brothers, which began in 1612, contributed to the disappearance. The owners left the castle in 1645 and moved to the castle. The original tallest tower has disappeared.

Access to the castle follows a marked path from the parking lot near the manor house in the village of Oponice. Visitors can see the remains of fortifications and palace buildings.

Welcome to the ruins of Oponice Castle. Right now you are standing in a place where history meets the peace of the surrounding countryside of the Nitra region. When you look up, the remains of the former keeper of this region stand before you. Although today the castle acts as a silent witness to the past, it is enough to stop for a moment and imagine how these walls once pulsed with life. The castle complex in front of you is a fascinating puzzle of history, which consists of fourteen registered objects. Each of them is a piece of mosaic that tells us a story about building development from the 13th to the early 17th century.

Let's go back in time now. Although the exact date of the castle's creation remains shrouded by the mystery, its foundations go far back. Already in the 13th century, a castle nucleus grew up to provide a safe haven. It was during this period that a Gothic refuge tower and a massive wall were built, which are still the most striking witnesses of ancient times. The castle was not just a stone building, it was a strategic point that had to face many pitfalls. The history of this place has not always been peaceful. In the year one thousand four hundred and thirty castles experienced dramatic moments when it was conquered and greatly damaged by the Hussite armies. Despite this devastating intervention, the castle was repaired, indicating its importance and determination to keep this place alive.

Now pay attention to the details you have in front of your eyes. Note how individual parts of the castle unite into one whole. When you look at the castle core, you will see the remains of the Gothic refuge tower. It's the part that once provided the highest level of protection. The castle wall that stretches around tells us how extensive the fortification of this complex was. Try to perceive the atmosphere of the place and imagine how architecture has changed over the centuries. From modest beginnings in the thirteenth century to gradual expansion and adjustments that lasted almost four centuries, the castle changed according to the needs of its inhabitants and then defence techniques. Every stone you see is part of a long process of building and restoration.

Although the specific names of historical figures that would be inextricably connected with this castle remain in the shadow of history, the story of the castle itself is strong enough. It's a story of resilience. Imagine the efforts that people in the 15th century had to make to repair the castle and restore its functionality after the Hussite attack. These walls are silent witnesses of decisions that have affected the lives of people around Oponice. It is fascinating to realize that although we do not know the names of architects or nobles who have walked here, their work still stands here and allows us to touch history.

The interesting thing that makes this place special is its complexity. The 14 registered objects that form this castle complex are truly a worthy number. Often, we see only one or two dominant towers in ruins, but here you can see a much wider picture of construction activity. It's like an open book in which each chapter represents another century. The mystery remains who exactly stood behind the initial proposal, but it is this unknown one that gives the place a sense of mystery and stimulates our imagination.

I hope you are interested in this short walk in the history of Oponice Castle. Now that you know what you're looking at and how long and varied the story hides behind these ruins, I invite you to look at this place in even more detail. Take a walk around, see the views from here, and let yourself be exposed to the calm atmosphere that this place offers. Thank you for choosing to meet this piece of our past with me. I wish you a pleasant time to discover the beauties of Oponice and I hope you will take many nice memories from here. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

At the climb to the ruins of Oponice Castle in the Tribeč Mountains, it is recommended to choose late spring or early autumn when the terrain is better passable. Due to the steep and rocky trails, solid tourist shoes are needed. No services are available in the castle area, so it is advisable to bring your own water and refreshments. When photographing ruins, light can be used during a gold watch that highlights the structure of stone walls. Visitors can focus on the details of architecture and views of Nitra hills. Families with children are advised to set aside enough time to climb and to take care of caution near unstable walls.

1. The ruins of Oponice Castle: The main destination of the trip with preserved parts of medieval architecture and views of the surrounding countryside of the Nitra region.

2. The courtyard of the castle: Space at the heart of the building, which allows to view the ground plan and preserved walls.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the ruins of Oponice castle will be green and bloom. Soft light is suitable for photographing details of masonry. Solid shoes are recommended, as the terrain is soaked and slippery after melting snow and rain. A layered clothing is suitable, as temperatures change during the day and wind blows on the hill.

In summer, trees provide shade on access paths. The sharp sun highlights the texture of the stone. It is advisable to plan for the early morning or evening. A head covering, plenty of water and insect repellent is recommended, which is more common in forest vegetation.

In the autumn the surrounding nature is colored in shades of yellow, orange and red. The valley often spreads fog. The days are shortening, so it is necessary to hike in time for the return to take place before dark. Waterproof and insulated clothing is suitable, as moisture and cold are kept in the walls throughout the day.

In winter the castle of Oponice is a quiet place. In snow cover access roads are icy and require caution. Winter shoes with non-slip soles, warm thermowash and gloves are essential. During bright freezing days, the low sun creates long shadows and highlights the lines of castle remains.
