church r.k.sv. Mikuláš Church
The church of St. Nicholas bishop in Sazdice (the district of Levice) is an early-gothic one-ship building from about 1330. It contains medieval fresco decoration and lies on the road from Esztergom to Tekov.
Sazdice were one of the 21 medieval settlements of the Hontian County. The location lay on the road from Esztergom to Tekov and mining towns in central Slovakia. The first phase of the construction of the ship and the presbytery took place around 1330, although the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic dates the early Gothic of the building to the second half of the 13th century. The first written mention of the church comes from 1414. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, patron saint of merchants, passengers and pilgrims.
At the time of the establishment of the building, several owners were replaced in the property of the municipality. At the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, the owners were representatives of the middle nobility, Ibor's sons from Demandice. Later the village was owned by members of the royal court: the doctor of King Charles I. Robert, Gekmin of Wallonia (recorded in 1351), and the pharmacist and financier Louis I. Jakub Saracen of Padova (ownership dated to 1352). In the period of the last medieval reconstruction was the owner of the podžupan Hontianska stool Pavol from Kolar.
The main longitudinal axis of the church is oriented from the southwest to the northeast. Perimeter masonry thickness 83 cm is built of quarry grey tufu using bricks and lime sand mortar. The building orbits brick sokel with a sloping ledge made of worked stone. The ship with outer dimensions 10 x 8-8,5 m has a gable roof and a presbytery with dimensions 5,5 x 6,5 m has a half-valley roof covered with a wooden shingle.
At the end of the 14th century, she replaced the original roughly painted plaster with smooth plaster with lime paint and geometric decoration in the form of painted corner blocks with dark red stripes. The main entrance in the southeast façade of the ship forms a portal with broken arch and profiling. Pigments of blue azuritus were found at the lining of the portal. The ship lights up two small windows with log arches and one rectangular window in the shield. The Presbytery has two windows with refractive arches, one with a top decoration with a three-leaf motif. Presbytery corners support support pillars with counter roofs.
At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, a rectangular sacristy with the outer dimensions of 6.5 x 5.5 m was added to the northwest side of the presbytery. About 1700 Baroque arrangements were made, when the arch of the presbytery was probably replaced by overclimbing and new altars were added. In the second half of the 19th century, internal equipment was restored, replaced shrubs and the ship built an empora with its own entrance and new windows. In the 20th century a hallway was built on the west side.
About the 1970s The 14th century was created inside fresco decoration. The interior of the ship in medieval form measured 8 x 6,5 m, while the threshold of the main portal at that time was 140 cm higher than the level of the original mortar floor.
The church gained its status as a monument in 1911. Since 1842 it has been managed by a parish in Demandice. The last architectural and restoration research was completed in 2023.
