st. Elizabeth's Church, Blue Bone. Church with grounds
The church of St. Elizabeth, also known as the Blue Church, is an Art Nouveau sacral building in Bratislava's Old Town. It is located on the outskirts of the city center on Bezrukova Street. The church was built between 1909 and 1913 according to the project of Budapest architect Ödön Lechner.
The church was built according to the project of Budapest architect Ödön Lechner. The foundation stone was laid on 23 August 1909 by the deputy Archbishop of Esztergom Claudio František Vaszary Dr. Simon Való. It's a blue-colored church in a unique Art Nouveau style. Characteristic is its blue plaster and blue glazed roofing. In the decoration of surfaces is applied layering of colour-differentiated plasters and division into fields softly framed by strips. On the main facade is the Italian mosaic of St. Elisabeth and on the main altar painting (oil on canvas) dominates the mosaic with St. Elisabeth holding a rose in the arms.
The church of St. Elizabeth is a single-ship building with a built-in cylindrical tower. The church is relatively small, but the architect on it masterfully maintained unity in ornamental shaping. Originally, the architect planned the dome, but he finally used an oval profile, which covered a steep hipped roof covered with a beautiful blue glazed tile. The arches, which are made of reinforced concrete, are a structural attraction. They were implemented by a well-known Bratislava firm. The building was led by the Bratislava builder Anton Durvay. On June 26, 1910 the church cross was solemnly erected and on May 14, 1911 bells were installed, built by Bishop Dr. Medard Kohl.
In the interior of the church there are six wall paintings. On the victorious arch of the Lamb of God, into the ship images of the holy Arpads. The paintings were painted by Budapest painters Bezsed and Zsillem.
Near the left wall of the church ship stands the side altar dedicated to the Spanish visionary of St. Theresa. It is decorated with a polychrome relief sitting Madonna with kneeling saint Theresa (works of the Bratislava sculptor Alojz Rigele). At the time of the altar, however, he was dominated by the magnificent marble relief of the praying wife of Emperor Francis Joseph I. Elizabeth of Bavaria (the same work of Alojz Rigele). In a time of growing anti-Hungarian moods after the break-up of Austria-Hungary, however, the relief plate was removed from the wall. To prevent its destruction, it was first moved to Grasalkovich's palace and later to the parish where it is today.
In the left rear corner there is a niche with the statue of St. Anton Paduan. At the entrance to the chorus is a tiny marble relief of young Peter Szapáry. Nika is a pendant of a cylindrical pulpit situated in the opposite corner of the ship.
With its appearance on the matter of the church, the cubic building of the parish is built in the depth of the garden. It is similarly decorated with organic trimming. Although the church is shaped most freely, the rational skeleton of its composition is quite clear.
St. Elizabeth is registered under number ÚZPF 256 and consists of 4 objects: garden, fence with gates, church and parish.
Currently, the church of St. Elizabeth is open to the public and worth a visit.
