church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church and belfry
The Assumption Church of Our Lady and the belfry in Podolínec in Prešov region are from the 17th century. The complex belongs to the group of Spiš Renaissance bells and was declared a national cultural monument in 1963.
The bell tower built the town in 1659, probably by rebuilding an older medieval building damaged by shaking the bell. Rebuilding costs amounted to 94 floren. The bell tower architecture corresponds to the Renaissance style of Spiš buildings. The bell tower has a four-storey floor plan and three separate entrances - the north basement, spiral staircase and the main western entrance with a wide stone portal and skylight.
The interior of the bell tower has rolled vaults with lunettes and folding niches. On the fourth floor stands a new steel bell chair with four bells and electric drive. The largest bell was cast in 1883 in Budapest by František Walser and is decorated with reliefs of the Virgin Mary and crucified Christ. Part of the ensemble is also a gothic bell from 1392, which was probably cast by Master Konrád in Spišská Nová Ves.
The bell tower was reconstructed several times. In 2011 they renewed the graffiti decoration on the corner and replaced the covering. The premises serve as a parish library.
In 2006 Slovak Post issued a stamp from the issue of Beauty of our country - Renaissance bell towers. The bell is accessible to visitors.

Welcome to Podolinec. You are standing in a place where time has stopped and where every wall and every stone tells a story about longevity, science and the constant movement of history. Before you, the bars monumental complex of the Church of Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the bell tower, which forms an integral part of this historic country. Before you start your tour, let's just try to stand still and see the atmosphere of this place for a while. Imagine the power emitted by this building, and imagine how people stood here hundreds of years ago, just like you are here today. When you look at this complex, you will likely immediately notice its deep historical roots. Although the overall appearance of the buildings you see today comes mainly from the 17th century, their history is much older and more complicated. This church and belfry are not just buildings; they witness the centuries that passed through this city. It's fascinating to think about how many twisted fates, royal eddies, and the daily lives of these people have been touched here. It was this depth and authenticity that made this complex a national cultural monument in 1963. It's not just a title, it's a recognition that what you see in front of you belongs to the very core of our cultural identity. Let us now pay attention to the bell tower that stands alongside the church. If you look at it carefully, you can look for traces of the past in its structure. Although Podolínec decided to build it in 1659, it was probably not a completely new project, but a reconstruction of something much older. It is very likely that the bell tower stands on the foundations of medieval construction, which gives this place a layered architecture. In 1659 the city invested 94 florins in this building. Let us try to imagine this sum in the context of the present time - a significant investment step that required solidarity and courage for local people. These florins were not mere coins, they were a symbol of the city's stability efforts and of hearing its voice - the voice of bells - all around. Now, when you see the height of the bell tower, try to imagine it not only as a solid structure but as a guardian of the city. Inside, there are treasures that go beyond the 17th century. If you had the opportunity to step up to the fourth floor, you would have come across something really special. There is a gothic bell from 1392. Think about it - while the bell you see is relatively young, this bell has been beating for over six centuries. When his sound carried news of joy or danger warnings, people in Podolínec were already experiencing completely different ages. This bell is the bridge between medieval and modern times, a lively piece of gothic that survived wars, changes in political regimes and bad weather. Although we do not know the names of specific architects or individual builders who brought these walls to heaven, we see their work clearly in front of ourselves. Their anonymity only increases the feeling of grandeur - they built not for their own glory, but for the community, for the faith and for future generations. Every detail, every line of this architecture is the result of their efforts, which for us today remains as an inheritance. There's something that might surprise you. When you look at this complex, you see not only the church and the bell tower, but you see the link between different eras. This constant transformation - from the medieval foundation to the seventeen-century reconstruction to today's protection as a national monument - is exactly what makes this place special. It's a constant dialogue between what was and what is. Now that you have learned the basic information about this place, we invite you to continue your journey. Get carried away by the atmosphere of Podolínec, walk on his streets and see how history sails with the presence. Perhaps the next look at the detail of a stone or the power of a bell tower will reveal something new. Thank you for taking your time and coming to see this disgusting heritage. We wish you a beautiful and inspiring tour.
